There’s a popular refrain from sports fans when it comes to ESPN’s Joe Buck: “Joe Buck hates my team!” He claims he doesn’t have time for that.
While engaging with followers on X, formerly Twitter, Buck was asked about the perception that he hates everyone’s team and loves the opponent.
“National announcers don’t root. Promise. Pass it on. The job is too hard for that stuff,” Buck wrote to a user who asked about the perception that he was rooting for the Chicago Cubs over the then-Cleveland Indians in the 2016 World Series. “People in (St. Louis) think I don’t like the Cards. They’re a part of my DNA but when the headset is on there isn’t room or even a thought of that.”
Buck was also asked about the best way to break into the broadcasting industry, and joked that you should “start with a famous dad”.
He continued by giving legitimate advice, saying “Do as much (play-by-play) as you can. Listen back to it as painful as it is. Even if it’s from the couch or upper bleachers at a game. Don’t try to sound like someone else. Do it. Listen to it. And improve on what you hear every time.”
