KMBZ hosts Scott Parks and Dana Wright had the unenviable task of covering the mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade Wednesday.
The shooting happened just as the afternoon program helmed by the longtime Kansas City radio stalwarts was about to begin. The duo dedicated their entire five-hour show to coverage of the mass shooting, speaking to callers who were eyewitnesses to the events, and also speaking to family members of KKFI radio host Lisa Lopez, who died in the shooting.
While discussing the day’s events, Parks admitted coverage of tragic events is different when it’s taking place in your city.
“On this horribly difficult day in Kansas City history, I’m trying to think of a time — certainly over the years, Dana and I’ve had to cover terrible things that have occurred in this country,” said Parks.
“The Boston Marathon bombing among them, Sandy Hook, Uvalde, Parkland. I can’t recall in the 12-plus years that we’ve been together having to cover something so traumatic for the city that we call home. In the city that we live in, and love. Today is hard.”
Wrigt concurred, calling the situation “very hard” to process and deal with while on the air.
