WTOP has cemented its place as the go-to news brand in Washington D.C. And it also remains the go-to place for advertisers as the station continued its run as the top billing station in America in 2023.
According to a report from BIA Advisory Services, WTOP, owned by Hubbard Radio, was the top billing station for the ninth straight year and the 13th time in the last 14 years.
Estimates from the company show that the all-news brand secured $66.3 million in revenue in 2023. That figure is nearly $25 million more than second-place KIIS-FM in Los Angeles.
News radio brands were well represented in the top 10 overall billing stations in 2023.
Audacy-owned 1010 WINS ($40 million) was listed as the third-highest-grossing station. Previously, the station was not ranked in the top 10, but now that the station features a simulcast on 92.3 FM, the combined revenue of both the AM and FM signals propels it to the third-place finish.
Meanwhile, sister station WBBM in Chicago was ninth with an estimated $30 million in revenue. In 2022, WBBM was also ranked in the ninth position. WCBS in New York rounded out the top 10, garnering $29.7 million. That represented a jump up from it’s 2022 position as the 11th-highest billing station.
