Dave Ramsey has led Ramsey Solutions for more than three decades, with the company becoming a multi-million enterprise under his stewardship.
Part of those leadership responsibilities deals with staffing and recruitment. It’s an issue many business owners have dealt with in recent years.
During his EntreLeadership podcast, Ramsey was asked about his philosophy when it comes to recruiting employees, especially those who may already have a business-to-business relationship with his company.
“The only rule we have at Ramsey on that is we don’t recruit or poach out of our friends. If it’s a company that we have a relationship with, we don’t hire their team members away or even talk to them without their permission,” he shared. “And so we treat that like an athletic situation. If you’re going to talk to the coach, it’s not unusual for you to call the athletic director and get permission to talk, because it’s kind of a courtesy thing.
“We treat it like that with friends but companies that we don’t have any relationship or knowledge of? Obviously, we can hire. We don’t target certain companies and poach them, so to speak. But we recruit from anybody. And I don’t think there’s anything to feel guilty about. There’s nothing unethical about that at all.”
Dave Ramsey continued by noting that the company’s philosophy on recruiting and hiring also focuses on fit rather than salary. He added, “I try here never to hire someone who’s only jumping over here for money. Because they’ll jump to the next place for more money.”
