After more than 20 million viewers tuned into night one of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, night two kicked off in Chicago.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage to raucous applause. During her speech, she called on members of the party to rally behind Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee and push her toward winning the race for the White House.
“We cannot indulge our anxieties about whether this country will elect someone like Kamala, instead of doing everything we can to get someone like Kamala elected,” Michelle Obama said.
She later added, “My girl Kamala Harris is more than ready for this moment. She is one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency, and she is one of the most dignified.”
The former First Lady also had quite a viral moment when she said “I want to know — I want to know — who’s going to tell him, who’s going to tell him, that the job he is currently seeking might just be one of those Black jobs?”, referencing comments made by Donald Trump that illegal immigrants are taking “Black jobs” away.
Many had high praise for Michelle Obama’s performance on night number two of the Democratic National Convention.
It was not universal praise, however.
Michelle Obama’s husband, Barack — the 44th President of the United States — also spoke on the main stage. During his speech, he had a viral moment of his own as he mocked Trump’s “obsession” with “crowd sizes.” While making his remarks, the hand gestures made by the former President alluded to an entirely different discussion.
“Here’s a 78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago. It’s been a constant stream of gripes and grievances that’s actually been getting worse now that he’s afraid of losing to Kamala,” Obama said. “There’s the childish nicknames. The crazy conspiracy theories. This weird obsession with crowd size.”
During his remarks, former President Obama also spoke glowingly of his Vice President and outgoing President Joe Biden, saying “I am proud to call him my president, but I am even prouder to call him my friend.”
Reactions poured in as the former President spoke. There were, as expected, differing opinions on his performance.
On Tuesday evening, the usually innocuous roll call of delegates took place. However, in 2024, the Democratic National Convention welcomed a DJ to play songs for each state during the roll call vote.
The decision to utilize a DJ was a popular one. Many opined on how the usually boring procedure was turned into an entertaining section of the night’s events.
