Washington Capitals Radio Voice John Walton Reveals Cancer Diagnosis

"I will be in a fight for a bit, but it's a fight I'm going to win."

Washington Capitals radio play-by-play announcer John Walton has announced he has been diagnosed with colon cancer.

In a post to social media, Walton shared that he underwent a colonoscopy late last month and assumed the results would be ordinary. However, he was diagnosed with the ailment after doctors took a closer look.

He shared that he would undergo surgery on Wednesday “to remove between 8-10 inches of my colon and the mass that is formed there. I’ll be in the hospital for a few days to recover, and home after to continue my recovery.”

John Walton continued by sharing that if the surgery and his recovery go well, he plans to attend Washington Capitals training camp as normal with the hope of being “in the broadcast booth for the first preseason game” on Sunday, September 22nd.

“I will be in a fight for a bit, but it’s a fight I’m going to win. I am so incredibly thankful for my hockey and (Monumental Sports and Entertainment) family who have been so supportive of me through this time, and I won’t be down for long,” Walton said.

The Washington Capitals are heard on flagship station 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C., as well as Hubbard Radio’s Federal News Network on 1500 AM.
