More than three years after moving 1230 WFAS AM to an all-digital signal, Cumulus Media has abandoned the signal and returned the license for the station to the FCC.
The company surrendered the license for the station licensed to White Plains, New York, a northern suburb of the city, according to RadioInsight. The 1,000-watt signal moved to an all-digital distribution in May 2021 after the FCC made the technology officially available. At the time of the switch, the station was just the third all-digital AM brand in the nation. Most AM radio stations have continued with an analog signal, due to the limited availability of HD Radio.
The Cumulus Media station was airing the entirety of the Westwood One nationally syndicated conservative talk offerings. Hosts like Dan Bongino, Ben Shapiro, Michael Knowles, and Chris Plante, among others, all gained clearance in the New York market on the signal.
With the surrender of the license for 1230 WFAS, Cumulus has now completely vacated the nations largest market after selling its holdings in the city between 2018 and 2023.
