A trio of Maine radio stations owned by renowned author Stephen King for more than four decades are set to go silent later this month, his company confirms.
The stations — 620 WZON, 96.3/103.3 WZLO, and 100.3 WKIT — are all set to cease operations on December 31st. The stations are all licensed either in or around the Bangor, Maine area.
“While radio across the country has been overtaken by giant corporate broadcasting groups, I’ve loved being a local, independent owner all these years,” said King. “I’ve loved the people who’ve gone to these stations every day and entertained folks, kept the equipment running, and given local advertisers a way to connect with their customers. Tabby and I are proud to have been a part of that for more than four decades.”
King purchased the stations in 1983. A release from his The Zone Corporation points out he “was a young man of 36” when he made the purchase, but is now 77 and “time to get his business affairs in better order.”
The release adds that the stations have “consistently” lost money over the four decades of ownership by King.
The stations feature “retro radio”, adult alternative, and rock formats.
Known as “The King of Horror”, Stephen King has published 65 novels/novellas and more than 200 short stories since his debut in 1974.
