SportsRadio 610 will be back on the road as its morning drive duo of Sean Pendergast and Seth Payne heads to spring training for the Houston Astros. The station made the announcement on Monday morning over the airwaves, divulging that Payne and Pendergast would be broadcasting live from a nearby Airbnb during its usual time slot before heading out to CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Fla. for spring training action.
The Astros share the spring training facility with the Washington Nationals, and there are games on the schedule at the ballpark throughout the entire week. This will mark the first time in two years that SportsRadio 610 will be on site for Astros spring training as the team looks to secure its fifth consecutive American League West division title.
“We’re going to be the eyes and ears for all of you at spring training,” Pendergast said on Tuesday’s edition of the show. “It’s the last week of the month we’re going down there, so we’re headed down there on Sunday, the 23rd of February, and then we will be there – that entire week Monday through Friday, we will be there.”
The show took some time to discuss some of the key storylines surrounding the team, including superstar José Altuve playing left field and free-agent acquisitions Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes making their team debuts. Pendergast recalled that José Abreu was the first baseman for the Astros the last time the show went to spring training, and he expressed that he hopes Walker’s three-year contract works out in a better manner. On top of that, longtime third baseman Alex Bregman still remains a free agent, although it definitively remains unknown if the Astros are involved in the bidding.
“This thing sounds like it’s getting done soon,” Pendergast said. “The reports are it’s the Cubs, it’s the Tigers and the Red Sox, and they all have multiyear offers out to him, I think ,or at least a couple of them do. Buster Olney said that he expects this thing to end, and he made it sound like the Astros are out of this thing, which that part sounds right to me. I think the Astros are out, but dude just real quick, that would be amazing if it was still going when we got there. That would be awesome for us.”
Payne articulated how there are a variety of backfields where players will participate in drills and other practice for the upcoming season. The Astros and Nationals have shared the spring training locale since 2017 when the two teams moved from their previous facilities in Florida. Both teams have recently won World Series championships, with the Astros most recently garnering the Commissioner’s Trophy in 2022, and are looking to finish the year victorious once again.
“It’s a really cool facility down there,” Payne said. “If you’ve never been, it’s a good time. It’s done so well that even if you weren’t huge into spring training, you would still enjoy yourself, and it’s like the perfect time of year for the climate is not too hot. It feels nice, it feels right.”
SportsRadio 610 recently broadcast live from Media Row ahead of Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, La. and was situated among other radio stations within the Audacy Sports cluster. It remains unknown if other programming on the sports talk outlet will be heading to Florida for spring training coverage as well. The Audacy-owned station does not have the radio play-by-play broadcast rights for the Astros, but it nonetheless provides coverage of the team throughout the year.
