Jon “Stugotz” Weiner has never been one to avoid a headline, and on Friday he leaned directly into one of sports media’s most ચર્ચed storylines. During his Stugotz & Company LIVE program on FOX Sports Radio, Jon “Stugotz” Weiner voiced strong support for Dianna Russini amid her ongoing situation with The Athletic.
He went a step further, publicly offering her a job if she becomes available.
“If The Athletic gets rid of her, she’ll be sitting right next to me and Izzy [Gutierrez] doing the show,” Weiner said. “I support my friends, and don’t bail on my friends. Especially at their worst professional time in their history. I don’t do that to them.”
Russini is currently under internal review after photos surfaced showing her with Mike Vrabel, the head coach of the New England Patriots, during a recent trip to Arizona. The images sparked questions about a potential conflict of interest given her role covering the NFL.
The Athletic, which operates under The New York Times, reopened its investigation after the photos generated additional scrutiny. Russini has not published since April 7 and has been sidelined as the process unfolds.
While the outlet initially defended Russini publicly, its editorial standards emphasize avoiding both actual conflicts and perceived bias. That framework has fueled broader debate across the industry in recent days.
Weiner, however, dismissed much of that criticism. He argued that conflicts of interest are commonplace throughout sports media and should not define the conversation.
“This entire industry is littered with conflicts of interest,” he said. “Every single take that anyone makes is littered in conflict of interest. I don’t want to hear about it. I spoke to her, okay, she’s going through a very difficult time. She’s going to survive this. And again, anyone who wants to get rid of her, I will hire her in two seconds.”
His comments reflect both loyalty and opportunism, two traits that have long defined his on-air persona. At the same time, they highlight how quickly narratives can shift in today’s media environment, where personalities react in real time and position themselves as landing spots for talent.
Russini joined The Athletic in 2023 and quickly became one of its most visible NFL insiders. Her reputation across the league has made this situation a focal point of discussion among media observers.
For now, no final decision has been announced regarding her status.
