Robert Griffin III confirms his interest in coaching his alma mater. The FOX Sports analyst says he has already spoken with Baylor’s athletic director about the possibility.
What We Know: Baylor fired Dave Aranda Sunday after two straight losses dropped the Bears to 4-3. Aranda finished 40-40 over seven seasons. Griffin won the 2011 Heisman Trophy in Waco. Today, he works as a college football analyst for FOX Sports. In an interview with The Dan Patrick Show, Griffin confirmed his interest and stated that he is a quality candidate for the position despite no formal coaching experience.
What They Said: (all quotes via The Dan Patrick Show):
Robert Griffin III on his interest in being the next head coach at Baylor: “Yes. 100%. If Baylor wants to get back to winning and have a university that isn’t just respectable on the football field, but the fans can be proud of. They need people who know what it looks like to win at Baylor.”
Robert Griffin III confirms he’s talked with Baylor about the position: “I would 100% be interested. I’ve talked with the athletic director, who is a guy in Doug McNamee that knows what it looks like to win at Baylor. Know how you have to win at Baylor and recruit to Baylor to make those things happen.”
Robert Griffin III says the requirements to be a successful college football coach have changed: “It’s a university that obviously I hold very dear and near to my heart. The way that coaching happens, being a CEO type of coach in college football, is completely different. You don’t have to have experience coaching at the highest level to be successful. I’m just tired of seeing Baylor be the stepstone or the stepchild to all these other teams. We should be back on top. “
What Remains Unclear: However, Griffin has never coached at any level. Instead, he chose broadcasting after injuries shortened his NFL career. Moreover, it remains unclear how seriously McNamee views his candidacy. Likewise, his FOX Sports role would face questions if talks advance.
What It Means: Ultimately, Griffin is selling Baylor identity over coaching experience. Meanwhile, FOX now has an analyst openly campaigning for a job he covers. As a result, his broadcasts this fall will carry added intrigue. If Griffin is chosen for the position, it will reunite possibly the school’s most popular quarterback with the university he called home.
