Skydance Begins Offering Voluntary Buyouts, Mandating Five-Days-A-Week Return to Office Policy

"Among our business and creative priorities, none matters more than building a strong culture, because it’s the foundation of everything we want to achieve."

Date:

Skydance is offering voluntary buyouts to employees across its newly combined company. The program arrives alongside a mandatory five-day return-to-office policy.

What We Know: David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz announced both changes in a staff memo Monday. The office mandate brings Warner Bros. Discovery in line with existing Paramount policy. Meanwhile, the buyouts give employees who don’t want that shift a way out. Eligible staffers get personalized terms and a window to accept the one-time offer. The announcement was made in a letter to all staff this morning.

What They Said: David Ellison, Ynon Kreiz (via The Washington Post): “At Skydance, our goal is to build the next-generation media and entertainment company, powered by creativity and technology. We are creative-first, audience focused, tech-forward and globally scaled. And in a world of endless choice and fierce competition for attention, we don’t just want to succeed. We want to win. To do that, we must be a strong, connected and agile company. Among our business and creative priorities, none matters more than building a strong culture, because it’s the foundation of everything we want to achieve. Winning requires us to work as one team: one company, fully aligned. That means communicating openly and collaborating efficiently across every part of the organization.”

What Remains Unclear: Skydance hasn’t said how many employees qualify or when each location’s mandate begins. Additionally, the buyouts’ share of the $6 billion efficiency target remains unknown. Layoffs will likely factor in, though Kreiz and board member Gerry Cardinale don’t expect most savings from staff cuts. Instead, they point to technology and marketing changes.

What It Means: This is likely the first of many cost-cutting moves under Skydance. Furthermore, the office mandate could thin the workforce without formal layoffs. This was an expected result of the merger between Skydance and WBD. As a result, employees at both legacy companies should brace for more change.
