NPR is bringing in a veteran media executive to strengthen its digital operations. David Berzin joins the public media organization as Senior Vice President of Product and Data.
What We Know: NPR announced the appointment October 29th. Berzin comes from Hearst Magazines, where he served as Vice President of Product, International. At NPR, he’ll build audience-facing products that drive engagement and revenue diversification. He’ll also oversee the data-sharing infrastructure behind NPR’s products and Network tools. Previously, he built audience measurement, identity and advertising products at Viacom, and he led MTV’s social platform.
What They Said: “I’ve spent my career building products at big media companies and mission-driven startups. NPR is the rare place that brings together that focus and sense of purpose. I look forward to partnering with our member stations and continuing to make NPR’s journalism, music, and storytelling something people choose every day.” –David Berzin
“David brings a combination of product leadership, technical expertise, and experience working across networks of media brands. He understands how to build for people’s everyday needs, and I’m excited to welcome him to deepen our relationships with audiences and sustain NPR’s public service mission.”-Ryan Merkley, NPR Chief Operating Officer
What Remains Unclear: NPR hasn’t announced when Berzin will officially begin his new role. Likewise, the organization also hasn’t detailed how its expanded data strategy will affect individual member stations.
What It Means: Berzin’s appointment signals NPR’s continued shift toward a more digitally focused future as audience listening habits evolve. His experience in audience measurement, advertising technology, and AI could help the organization strengthen engagement and develop new revenue opportunities. For the broader radio industry, the move highlights the growing importance of digital platforms in reaching audiences and maintaining listener relationships.
