Jeff Pearlman questioned Craig Carton for hosting John Rocker on his OutKick program in a viral video late last week. In turn, Carton accused Pearlman of plagiarism and a misguided view of his career thus challenging him to an appearance together to discuss.
What We Know: Rocker appeared on The Craig Carton Show last week, which launched on OutKick in September. Pearlman objected publicly, calling Rocker a racist and questioning Carton’s judgment in having him as a guest on his program. Notably, Pearlman wrote the 1999 Sports Illustrated profile that exposed Rocker’s offensive remarks. In June 2000, Rocker confronted Pearlman face-to-face, and the two have clashed since. Following Pearlman’s video, where he complimented Carton at first, he then questioned why the WFAN and OutKick host would welcome Rocker as a guest.
What They Said: Jeff Pearlman (via TikTok): “Craig Carton, why do you have this f***ing b***t piece of s**t on your show? He doesn’t watch the WNBA. He couldn’t name any player besides Caitlin Clark and probably Angel Reese, who he’s referring to with the N word. He’s a racist, b*****d piece of s**t. And you give him a platform? What are you doing?”
Jeff Pearlman questions Carton’s career today versus previously (via TikTok): “What are we doing here, man? You were a good f*****g radio host. How did your career fall to this? Seriously, I get [John] Rocker is an idiot. You’re not an idiot. How did your career fall to this? What are we doing here? Honestly, what are we doing here? This doesn’t make sense.”
(All Craig Carton Quotes Via OutKick):
Craig Carton is disappointed by Jeff Pearlman’s attack on his career: “What a shame! What could have been a brilliant book writing journalistic career has now fallen off the deep end into woke politics and aggressive plagiarism. Shame on you, Jeff [Pearlman].”
Craig Carton says Jeff Pearlman doesn’t know anything about him: “No one ever appointed you [Jeff Pearlman] the moral compass of sports media. No one ever asked for your opinion. Then when you decide to attack me, you can’t even use facts and basic journalism and journalistic integrity to come after me. So, if you want to attack me for going to prison, have at it. I’m an open book in that one. But you want to attack my career? Well, why don’t you learn something about my career?”
Craig Carton welcomes a discussion with Jeff Pearlman: “If you want to engage me, let’s have at it. Anytime you want to come on my show, open door. Anytime you want to have me on yours, open door. See the difference between me and you, Jeff [Pearlman], is that I’ve got nothing to hide. My skeletons are out there. They played out publicly. But I’m sure you got some things you don’t want people to know about. So why don’t we get into it?”
Craig Carton challenges Jeff Pearlman to be more educated on his career: “If you’re going to comment on me, if you’re going to take your shots at my career, get it right. If you need help writing your next book or doing your next project, rather than stealing from people that did it before you, just ask permission to use their stuff. You’d be surprised how many people say yes. As long as you properly credit them for it.”
What Remains Unclear: Any prior history between Pearlman and Carton remains unclear, as no earlier public dispute has surfaced. Additionally, Carton didn’t cite specific examples to support his plagiarism accusation. It’s also unclear whether Pearlman will accept Carton’s open invitation.
What It Means: Ultimately, the clash highlights Carton’s approach towards discussions with polarizing guests. After all, Carton joined the platform to tackle topics he avoids elsewhere. As a result, bookings like Rocker’s will likely draw more attention from sports media personalities that cover the space and lean into the political realm. However, Carton’s open-door reply suggests he welcomes the fight. Whether or not Pearlman accepts is unknown.
