AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act Passed By U.S. House of Representatives

The House passed the measure after years of legislative efforts dating to 2023.

Date:

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act on Tuesday evening. The vote advances legislation that would preserve AM access in new vehicles nationwide.

What We Know: The House passed the measure after years of legislative efforts dating to 2023. The current House bill, H.R. 979, was introduced by Reps. Gus Bilirakis and Frank Pallone in February 2025. The legislation would direct the Department of Transportation to require automakers to provide AM radio as standard equipment without an additional charge. It would also require manufacturers to notify consumers when vehicles don’t include AM access. The House Energy and Commerce Committee previously advanced the bill 50-1 in September 2025.

What They Said: “Today’s decisive House passage of the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act is a significant step forward for the millions of Americans who rely on AM radio for lifesaving emergency information, trusted news and a vital connection to their communities.” -NAB President/CEO Curtis LeGeyt

What Remains Unclear: The House passage doesn’t make the legislation law. The Senate must also pass the measure before it can reach the president’s desk. NAB said the Senate version has more than 60 bipartisan cosponsors.

What It Means: The House vote moves the effort into its next legislative stage after years of stalled progress. Meanwhile, supporters have argued AM remains important for emergency communications when cellular or internet service becomes unavailable.
