How Roku Puts FOX Corp. in Position to Challenge YouTube

I don’t know that people are talking about this enough. FOX isn’t just joining the fight against YouTube. Instead, it’s showing up with a roster of assets few rivals can match. And now it’s dancing with the prettiest partner in the room.

FOX Corp. made one of the boldest moves in media, and it might be underrated. Once the Roku deal closes early next year, the company will control one of the most powerful doorways into American living rooms. That’s a huge shift for a company that once hesitated on streaming.

Consider the numbers. With Roku under its umbrella, FOX will rank as the third-largest TV distributor in the U.S. Only YouTube and Skydance, which combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery, will sit ahead of it. That’s rarefied air for FOX.

However, size alone isn’t the real story. The bigger story is where that size lands. FOX now holds a commanding spot in an arena that’s growing faster than almost any other in television.

FOX Is Building a FAST Empire

When you think about FOX today, two brands come to mind first. FOX Sports and Fox News are already hugely successful, and both deliver massive audiences. Now, add Tubi and The Roku Channel to the mix. The result is one of the most dominant players in free ad-supported streaming television, or FAST. In fact, FOX might be the most dominant player of all.

FAST continues to grow by leaps and bounds every year, and FOX sits right in the middle of that growth. Tubi already gives the company a strong foothold. Meanwhile, The Roku Channel brings enormous reach on one of the platforms viewers use most. Together, those two services give FOX a scale few competitors can touch.

The momentum couldn’t be stronger. Viewers are tired of juggling subscriptions and rising monthly bills. Because of that, free options look more appealing every month. FOX already owns some of the strongest FAST assets on the market, so it stands to benefit more than anyone.

Think about the synergy, too. Live sports and breaking news drive habitual viewing. Likewise, Tubi’s deep library and The Roku Channel’s free lineup keep viewers around between big events. That combination builds the daily habit advertisers want.

Moreover, the business model fits FOX perfectly. Advertisers crave reach, and viewers love free. Therefore, FOX can sell scale to one group while serving the other. Plus, Roku’s platform gives FOX influence over the home screen where viewing decisions start.

Perfectly Positioned to Challenge YouTube

Everyone in the TV space is fighting to compete with YouTube. Few companies have found a real answer. Still, FOX looks as well-positioned as any of them to take the challenge head-on.

Here’s why. FOX has premium live sports, the nation’s top cable news network, and a rapidly growing FAST business. Now, Roku adds the distribution muscle to connect all of it. Consequently, FOX can compete for viewers and ad dollars at a scale it never had before.

Data matters, too. Roku’s platform will show FOX what viewers watch and how they respond to ads. Advertisers value that insight, and FOX can now offer it alongside premium content. Furthermore, one of YouTube’s biggest advantages has always been its grip on the home screen. FOX now owns a real piece of that territory.

Live programming gives it another edge. YouTube thrives on creators, yet it can’t match FOX’s marquee sports rights or its news operation. Those assets pull in viewers every day, and Roku now puts them front and center.

A Masterclass in Timing

Timing helps as well. After hesitating at first, FOX entered the streaming wars at exactly the right moment. While rivals burned billions chasing subscribers, FOX built a leaner, ad-supported approach. As a result, it avoided the costly missteps that plagued others.

I don’t know that people are talking about this enough.

FOX isn’t just joining the fight against YouTube. Instead, it’s showing up with a roster of assets few rivals can match. And now it’s dancing with the prettiest partner in the room.

Ultimately, this is a masterclass by the company. It waited, watched and then struck at the perfect time. Don’t be surprised if it becomes the biggest challenger YouTube faces.
