Netflix Launches AI Discover Feature to Personalize Streaming Recommendations

AI Discover offers personalized recommendations based on viewers' moods, interests and preferences.

Date:

Netflix is introducing a new AI-powered feature to help subscribers find their next watch. AI Discover offers personalized recommendations based on viewers’ moods, interests and preferences.

What We Know: Netflix announced November 3 that it’s testing AI Discover with select U.S. subscribers using Netflix in English on supported TVs. Viewers can explore categories like “Something Light,” “Scare Me,” “Family Movie Night” and “Quick Watches.” They can refine suggestions or select “Something Different” for alternatives. Additionally, a “Tune Your Recommendations” button lets users keep or reject suggested titles. Netflix says the technology responds to feedback in real time. Unlike a traditional AI chatbot, it uses preset categories and excludes children’s profiles. The company plans to expand access and potentially integrate successful features into its main interface. The launch follows similar AI initiatives from Prime Video, Disney+ and Tubi. It also comes amid concerns about declining per-subscriber viewing engagement.

What they Said: “What we’re most excited about is how it feels to use. Tell us what you’re after, and the experience adjusts. Tell us a recommendation isn’t for you, and we’ll remember it in AI Discover, so it won’t keep turning up. AI Discover is powered by a new intelligence layer we’ve been building that responds to what members tell us in real time and keeps learning”.-Netflix via company announcement

What Remains Unclear: Netflix hasn’t disclosed how many subscribers will initially receive access or when AI Discover could become widely available. The company also hasn’t announced plans to expand beyond TVs to mobile devices or web browsers. Additionally, it’s unclear which experimental features could become permanent or how Netflix will measure their impact on viewer engagement.

What It Means: Netflix’s AI Discover rollout could improve viewer engagement by making content easier to find and reducing browsing time. The feature also gives subscribers greater control over recommendations while helping Netflix promote overlooked titles. By following other streaming platforms into AI-powered discovery, Netflix reinforces a growing industry shift toward more personalized viewing experiences. If successful, AI Discover could reshape Netflix’s interface and influence how viewers navigate streaming platforms.
