NBC Sports’ Jon Miller: NBC Wouldn’t Have the NBA and Premier League Without Peacock

0

Jon Miller, President of acquisitions and partnerships for NBC Sports is bullish on using a hybrid approach to retain sports rights. Speaking at NAB during a panel moderated by Puck’s John Ourand, Miller pointed to Peacock as a key piece of the company’s long-term strategy.

He described the platform as a complement to broadcast, not a replacement.

“It’s enabled us to make investments in properties that we wouldn’t have been able to make otherwise,” Miller said. “We would not have been able to acquire NBA [rights] if we didn’t have Peacock as a platform. We would not be able to acquire the exclusive [U.S.] rights to the Premier League.”

Peacock now reaches roughly 44 million homes, but when added with NBC Sports Network carriage on YouTube TV and Xfinity, that figure reaches roughly 65 million homes. A figure Miller said puts it in line with competitors such as ESPN, FOX and TNT Sports. However, he emphasized that its role centers on expanding opportunities rather than shifting core distribution.

Despite the rise of deep-pocketed streaming competitors for sports rights, Miller believes traditional networks still hold meaningful advantages.

“I think the streamers have a different set of priorities and strategic objectives than we do,” Miller said. “They have very deep pockets, but they can’t offer a lot of what broadcast can offer. They can’t offer the marketing and the promotion. Certainly, they can’t offer the production expertise that NBC Sports, CBS, Fox and Disney [ABC/ESPN] can offer to partners.”

Miller also highlighted decades of investment by NBCUniversal in infrastructure and technology. Those resources, he said, allow NBC to deliver high-level production quality and broad distribution at scale.

He added that partners continue to value that reach, especially when compared to newer platforms. In Miller’s view, companies like CBS and Disney remain well positioned as the sports rights marketplace evolves.

NAB Show Panel: ‘The Creator Economy is a People Business’, Can’t Be Replaced by AI

1

The NAB Show in Las Vegas is underway, and one of the many hot-button topics is the use of AI in media.

During Sunday morning’s “State of the Creator Economy”, some of the panelists shared their thoughts on the use of AI.

“Brands are all-in on everything these days,” said Pierre-Loic Assayag, CEO and co-founder of Traackr. “The good, the bad, and the ugly.”

He said the good includes the data that can be compiled and analyzed by AI.

Others on the panel, such as Ankler Media’s Like & Subscribe editor Natalie Jarvey, believe generative AI was once viewed as a threat but is now considered a useful technology tool.

Alesandro Bogliari, however, isn’t convinced AI can replicate what humans do on platforms like YouTube. The co-founder and CEO of The Influencer Marketing Factory believes the advantages are with humans, not AI.

“The creator economy is a people business,” Bogliari said. “It’s a friend I’ve never met. And I follow them because I can see part of myself in them. AI simply cannot replace that.”

Barack & Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Production Company Leaving Netflix

0

Higher Ground — the production company owned by former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle — is set to leave Netflix later this year.

For the past eight years, Higher Ground has partnered with Netflix for its first-look deal. However, that deal is set to expire later this year. The former President said the company is evolving in the process.

While speaking at History Channel’s HistoryTalks special on Philadelphia, Obama shared that the deal with Netflix is coming to a close.

“We were in partnership with Netflix,” Obama said. “We’re in a process now of transitioning to a more independent [future] where we can work with a bunch of different studios.”

Barack and Michelle Obama launched Higher Ground in 2018. It had an exclusive deal with the streaming platform until 2024. It then transitioned to a first-look arrangement. The company has produced a wide array of programming, including podcasts and documentaries.

Faster Football is staying on DAZN’s global stage. The emerging soccer property renewed its distribution partnership with the streaming giant. The deal keeps the Singapore tournament available live and free-to-air worldwide.

Faster Football, previously Soccer7Series, returns July 24–26 at Our Tampines Hub Stadium in Singapore. The event will feature a 30-hour live broadcast. Organizers plan 95 matches across men’s, women’s, and masters competitions.

Clubs include AC Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Corinthians, Vasco da Gama, Yokohama F. Marinos, Leicester City, Queens Park Rangers, and Coventry City.

“We are delighted to be announcing the continuation of our partnership with the DAZN. The format leans into speed and action. Matches feature seven-a-side teams and seven-minute halves. Games take place on a full-size pitch. The structure targets digital audiences and short-form consumption.

“Faster Football is a great example of how new, high-energy formats are reshaping the way fans experience sport. DAZN supports innovative competitions and giving them a truly global platform to grow,” said Shay Segev, DAZN Group CEO.

Top 15 Podcast Advertisers Spent Nearly $65 Million in March, New Magellan AI Data Shows

0

Magellan AI has released its list of the top podcast advertisers during March, and the highest spenders placed millions across a variety of formats.

The top 15 podcast advertisers for the month spent $64.9 million. During the month, 12 of the top 15 spenders increased their spending. Only McDonald’s, FanDuel, and Toyota were inside the top 15 and decreased their spending compared to the prior month.

Quince was the top overall spender. It purchased $6.5 million in podcast advertising during the month. That topped the $5.9 million spent by BetterHelp and the $5.8 million purchased by Amazon.

The sports genre saw the lion’s share of advertising from the top spenders. Of the 15 top podcast advertisers, 12 had sports as their most popular genre. Meta — which spent $5.2 million in March — put most of its advertising in the news format, while Quince and Shopify ($4.9 million) put most of their ads into the comedy genre.

The March spending shows a nearly 7% increase in overall spending from the top 15 podcast advertisers compared to January. In that month, those spending leaders bought just under $61 million in 2026’s first month.

Magellan AI analyzes podcast advertising data from the top 3,000 podcasts in the U.S.

Tyrese Haliburton Launches Zero Doubt Creative Production Company

0

Tyrese Haliburton isn’t waiting for a return to the court to expand his brand. The Indiana Pacers star is entering the content business.

Haliburton announced the launch of his own production company, Zero Doubt Creative. The venture includes a multiyear partnership with Brent Montgomery’s Wheelhouse.

Zero Doubt Creative will work with Wheelhouse Sports on original programming and branded content. Some projects will be pitched across the media landscape. Others will live on Haliburton’s YouTube and social channels.

“I’ve always been inspired by the power of content,” said Haliburton to the Hollywood Reporter. “Especially the ability to create ideas, moments and experiences that can connect people through storytelling. As I’ve gotten older and experienced pivotal moments in my life, I wanted to find the right way to tell those stories.”

The first project is already set. It’s an original docuseries titled Time Out. The series will follow Haliburton’s return from a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in Game 7 of last year’s NBA Finals.

“Launching Zero Doubt is the start. Our goal is simple — tell honest compelling stories and build a platform that will grow with me throughout my career and beyond, all the while, setting up a community with like-minded individuals who lead with authenticity. I’m excited for what’s next,” said Haliburton.

Portal A will produce the series alongside Wheelhouse. A premiere date has not been announced.

“Ty brings the same passion to creating and storytelling that he brings to the court,” said Montgomery. “Wheelhouse looks forward to expanding those ambitions with him, Kristina and the whole Zero Doubt team.”
