Dick Vitale Aiming for Nov. 28 ESPN Return After Positive Health Update

0

Dick Vitale received good news at his checkup with Dr. Steven Zeitels, director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Laryngeal Surgery and Voice Rehabilitation Center, and has plans on making his return to ESPN to call college basketball on Nov. 28 when Miami faces Kentucky. In a video posted on social media, Vitale spoke for the first time in seven months and expressed that he would be utilizing his voice in moderation for the next couple of weeks. Throughout his message, his emotion was palpable and potent, and he shared that viewers were the first people to hear his voice in a very long time.

The video then panned to Dr. Zeitels, who explained that Vitale had undergone a variety of procedures to manage vocal cord cancer. He expressed that the hospital had plans to look under the microscope in the operating room, but changed their course of action after the images demonstrated no evidence of the presence of the cancer. Dr. Zeitels acknowledged that they will need to monitor Vitale’s condition and could ultimately engage in an endoscopic procedure to enhance his voice.

“The best pathway now is patience,” Dr. Zeitels said. “Let’s see how Dick can heal himself and get back to what he loves to do, which is being with all of you and announcing.”

Vitale previously fought both melanoma and Lymphoma and was declared cancer-free this past April. Following this important step in his recovery, he proceeded to share details of his broadcast return, stating that he is hoping and praying that he will be able to be at the Miami-Kentucky game. Until then, he will use his voice in moderation with hopes of making it back courtside to call games, something he has no intention of stopping any time soon.

“I love all of you and I thank all of you for your prayers and your unbelievable love you’ve sent me,” Vitale said. “It meant so much to me. I tell you – it’s been tough. It’s been tough, but boy, I just say [to] have faith [and] think positive, and I’ve tried to do that.”

Rich Zeoli: Breaking News Makes Me Love Afternoon Drive

0

Just over one year ago, 1210 WPHT host Rich Zeoli moved from mornings to afternoons on the Philadelphia news/talk station. He’s not disappointed with the change.

During The Rich Zeoli Show Monday, the longtime host noted all of the breaking news that took place directly before and during the show, including the news President Joe Biden would launch an account on Donald Trump’s Truth Social and the news that Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) was likely to be voted as Speaker of the House Tuesday.

He shared that is one of the advantages of hosting later in the day.

“A lot of stuff broke today while we were getting ready to go on the air. And that’s what often happens. It is why we love afternoon drive for that reason. Because things kind of have a tendency of doing that on this show,” said Zeoli.

In addition to seeing breaking news in the afternoon, Zeoli recently celebrated the success of his show’s podcast before its one-year anniversary. The Philadelphia host claimed it was approaching more than 2 million downloads since moving to afternoon drive in October of last year. Nick Kayal was tabbed to replace Zeoli in mornings, moving the station to an all-local lineup from 6 AM-7 PM.

New York Islanders Radio Announcers Calling Most Road Games Remotely

0

The New York Islanders will not be sending their radio play-by-play announcers to most road games, becoming the first professional sports franchise in the New York metropolitan area to make this move. The organization, which utilizes college radio station WRHU-FM at Hofstra University as its flagship home, had announcing duo Chris King and Greg Picker call games remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic from its radio studios. Entering the 2023-24 season, the team opted to keep its current broadcasting arrangement, which disseminates games to ESPN New York and WRCN-FM. Neil Best of Newsday was first with the report on this decision.

The radio announcers are employed by the team themselves, but they have historically traveled to road games separately, assuming an extra cost. Conversely, MSG Networks announcers Brendan Burke and Butch Goring are employed by the Madison Square Garden Network itself, and they are expected to continue traveling to road games. The Toronto Maple Leafs received backlash for its decision to keep its radio broadcasters remote last season, but ultimately reinstated them at road games in the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

While King and Picker will still travel to local games – such as those against the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers – most of their road work will be done remotely. Saturday night’s broadcast of the Islanders’ matchup against the Buffalo Sabres will mark the return of these remote presentations, something that the team had not done since the COVID-19 pandemic. In a 2021 interview with Barrett Sports Media, King spoke about the challenges associated with calling games off a monitor and how it is difficult to replicate the in-arena atmosphere.

“You are limited to what the [television] director shows you, as opposed to being at the event,” King said. “In hockey, things happen away from the puck all the time, and I need to look there to see what plays are being set up, especially late in close games.”

King has been calling Islanders games on radio since 1998 and is also on the broadcast for Long Island Ducks baseball. He has been joined by Picker since 2015 after the team utilized a rotation of college students to serve as color commentators. The team has yet to divulge its future radio plans after Good Karma Brands revealed that it will decline renewal of its lease on 98.7 FM, moving ESPN New York to 1050 AM and other digital platforms.

Al Michaels: ‘I’m Not Doing Access Hollywood’ During Thursday Night Football

0

Over the last several weeks, the alleged relationship between singer/songwriter Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has dominated headlines. During Thursday Night Football last week, Swift attended the game to support Kelce. Play-by-play announcer Al Michaels knew that he needed to recognize her presence while also carefully allocating how often they would discuss her.

Michaels appeared on the ABC late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday where his interview with host Jimmy Kimmel immediately began with a question about how Amazon Prime Video handled the situation. His reply expressed an understanding for viewers on both sides of the situation; that is, those tuning in to watch the game, and others who just wanted to receive a glimpse of Swift’s suite.

“How much do you show her?,” Michaels said. “She’d been on twice, and football fans are going, ‘Enough,’ but we were praying she’d come into the booth and sing for us and do the whole thing. I had to acknowledge it, but what do you do? You can’t fool around; otherwise people will say that sounds hokey and the whole thing.”

Michaels and Prime Video color commentator Kirk Herbstreit stayed focused on the game at hand throughout the night, and the broadcast utilized shots of Swift occasionally. In the end, a football game is focused on the action taking place on the gridiron rather than specific people in attendance, and he knew that his focus would ultimately be on the Chiefs and their opponent, the visiting Denver Broncos.

When Michaels introduced Swift on the air, he shared that he did not know how to describe her. This prompted Kimmel to inform him that the show had the clip where he referred to her as Kelce’s “good buddy” and “girlfriend.”

“Is she his good buddy or girlfriend, Al?,” Kimmel asked. “It can’t be both.”

“You’re doing a game like that; I know the internet is going to blow up,” Michaels replied. “Page Six is waiting for whatever I say. You know what I really wanted to say? Fiancé. I didn’t because I figured Travis would beat me up at the end of the game.”

Al Michaels and Herbstreit did not overly hone in on Swift, instead discussing the football game and talking about how Kelce was playing despite entering as questionable with an ankle injury. The Chiefs ended up winning the game 19-8, marking the team’s fifth consecutive win and improving their record to 5-1 overall.

“It’s hard because people tune in to watch a football game,” Al Michaels said. “I’m not doing Access Hollywood.”

The matchup continued Prime Video’s successful start to the 2023 regular season with five consecutive weeks of double-digit viewership increases. Nielsen Media Research ratings stated that the matchup averaged 13.83 million viewers, up 57% over the comparable game year-over-year (YoY). When combining the Nielsen figure with internal metrics from Amazon, the average number rises to an average minute audience (AMA) of 14.90 million viewers.

Beasley Media Group Issued Nasdaq Delisting Warning

0

Nasdaq has issued a notice to Beasley Media Group that its stock price is no longer in compliance after closing below the $1 per share minimum for 30 consecutive business days.

The stock market provides companies 180 days to regain compliance. Beasley Media Group will have until April 10th, 2024 to return its minimum price to $1 per share for 10 consecutive business days.

In its filing with the Securities & Exchanges Commission, Beasley said “The Company intends to actively monitor the closing bid price of its Common Stock and will consider all reasonable available options to regain compliance with the Minimum Bid Price Requirement, which may include transferring the listing to the Nasdaq Capital Market and/or seeking stockholder approval to effect a reverse stock split. There can be no assurance that the Company will regain compliance with the Minimum Bid Price Requirement during the 180-day compliance period, secure a second 180-day period to regain compliance, maintain compliance with the other Nasdaq listing requirements or be successful in appealing any delisting determination.”

Additionally, Beasley says if it does not regain compliance by April of next year, it could still be eligible for an additional 180-calendar day compliance period to hit certain requirements.

Beasley Media Group joins a growing list of radio companies that have been issued non-compliance notices by Nasdaq or the New York Stock Exchange this year. Audacy, Salem Media Group, and Urban One have been given similar notices.

Keith Olbermann: Rachel Maddow Needs to Protest NBC News, Salem Media Group Debate Partnership

0

NBC News has partnered with Salem Radio Network for the third Republican Presidential primary debate next month. Former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann shared his disappointment with not only the partnership but the lack of outrage for the network’s on-air hosts.

During Countdown with Keith Olbermann Tuesday, the former cable news host said he wasn’t surprised to hear about the agreement, noting that NBC News was obviously driven by money. However, he shared his disappointment that no one inside the network balked at the idea of partnering with the conservative radio network.

“I must confess I’m still stupid enough to have believed that when this broke that somebody at NBC like Lester (Holt) — who I think wants to be an ethical person — or somebody at MSNBC like Chris Hayes or Lawrence O’Donnell or even (Rachel) Maddow would stand up and say ‘Nope. I’m out’,” Olbermann said.

He continued by noting that Maddow has a moral obligation to oppose the partnership.

“At what point do you realize that by sitting there shilling for this company that just did a deal with the platformers of Charlie Kirk, Nick Fuentes, and Andrew freaking Tate you become Charlie Kirk, Nick Fuentes, and Andrew freaking Tate? When it’s mixed in there with those scum, how much money does it cost you to buy your soul back? For god’s sake, Rachel, say something. Your voice still matters. Then again, I’m assuming it’s still your voice.”

Olbermann wasn’t the only critic of the announcement Monday. CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy slammed the pairing, calling Salem Radio Network a “stable of MAGA media personalities” and “right-wing figures who have espoused incendiary views, pushed conspiracy theories, and told outright lies about the 2020 election”.

NBC News reporter Ben Collins joked on X, formerly Twitter, that he loves “my new business partners Glenn Greenwald and Dinesh D’Souza”.

Laura Coates: New CNN Show Will Be ‘Rejuvenation of the Larry King Experience’

1

CNN’s latest additions to its primetime lineup — shows hosted by Abby Phillip and Laura Coates — debuted Monday evening. Coates says there is a wink and a nod to a television legend in both her show’s format and title.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Coates said her show will look similar to programs previously hosted by Larry King in primetime on the venerable news network.

“It will be a renaissance and rejuvenation of the Larry King experience. It’s not coincidence that the show is called Laura Coates Live, like Larry King Live,” admitted Coates. “I always loved the intimate experience, where the viewers feel like they are in the room where it’s happening. I am a conduit to the questions they want asked. It will have a late-night vibe.”

Coates was originally tabbed for a more prominent role at the network under the leadership of former CEO Chris Licht. However, that role was rescinded under his direction. After his ouster, the network tabbed both Coates and Phillip for primetime hosting duties, which Coates says shows the commitment to representation at CNN.

“I’m so excited that Abby and I get a chance to pass the baton from one to the other,” said Coates. “Having two Black women at the helm of prime-time coverage speaks volumes about CNN’s commitment to representation. We are not mouthpieces. We are women who take seriously this enormous and generous platform we’ve been given, and we will do it with a unique perspective that is unlike anywhere else on TV.”

Shams Charania: I Send 500 Texts and Emails Per Day

0

To say that senior NBA insider Shams Charania is a busy man would be a wild understatement, but it’s true. But that’s the career path he’s chosen and been so successful at for years now.

Charania was profiled by New York Magazine recently, and in it, his dependency on his cell phone to do his insider work effectively was spotlighted.

It was reported that Shams Charania averages 18 hours of screen time on his phone a day. At 29 years old, the reporter has risen to be one of the two prominent insiders in the league. But he’s achieved such a high level of success in the social media age.

The feature pointed out that Shams Charania will send upwards of 500 text messages and emails per day. In the race to beat ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski to the scoop, Charania said he has to be constantly connected to his phone to make it all work.

“My mind is consumed by, ‘What can I do today to get information that I didn’t have yesterday?'” he said. “It consumes everything I do.”

Charania rarely takes time off for fear of missing a scoop. But if he does have to disconnect and recharge his batteries, he’d prefer to be in a position to not disconnect fully.

“If I take a day off, never mind a week off, I put myself behind the eight ball,” he said. “I prefer the poolside sit-and-do-nothing vacation, so I can still be on my phone as constant as I wanna be.”

Vince McMahon to Focus on Media Rights Deals as WWE Executive Chairman

0

WWE founder and TKO Group Holdings executive chairman Vince McMahon will not be having a bigger hand in the creative direction of its shows moving forward.

McMahon instead is going to be focusing his attention on media rights for Monday Night Raw and NXT moving forward. WWE and NBCUniversal reached an agreement last month that will see Friday Night SmackDown move from its current home on FOX to USA Network next October. The deal is for five years.

McMahon’s son-in-law, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, is the chief content officer and has been handling decisions about storylines and superstar development for SmackDown and Monday Night Raw since July 2022.

Even as McMahon stepped down as WWE chairman at that time after an investigation into sexual misconduct allegations, he still tried to influence the WWE product creatively. Levesque’s creative decisions have been widely praised by fans, and viewers and followers of WWE tend to have an idea when McMahon maybe had final say. But that will no longer be the case.

Reports are that Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel wants everyone in the company to focus on the jobs they’ve been given, including McMahon.

ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Rizzo Goes Viral for Browns Victory Reaction

0

The Cleveland Browns pulled off a thrilling upset over the San Francisco 49ers Sunday afternoon thanks to Jake Moody’s missed 41-yard field goal attempt in the closing seconds. 850 ESPN Cleveland host Tony Rizzo showcased the range of emotions Browns fans felt in a video posted to the station’s Facebook page Sunday evening.

The video, which had 45,000 views as of Monday night, starts off with the co-host of The Really Big Show praising the Browns for being adequately prepared for an unbeaten Niners team coming off a blowout win over the Dallas Cowboys the week before.

Tony Rizzo then started rooting for Moody to miss the kick that would’ve moved San Francisco to 6-0.

“Miss it you dog!” Rizzo said. “Best team in the NFL, they had to fight tooth and nail with a backup quarterback!”

The Browns call timeout to ice the kicker, and during the pause Rizzo continued to express optimism for where the team was at this point in the season.

“Couldn’t ask for more, 2-3 after five if he makes it,” he said. “But I’m not worried.”

Eventually Moody attempts the field goal and the kick misses wide right. Rizzo starts jumping up and down in excitement. He says it was apropos that a missed kick at the gun determined the outcome with former Browns leg Phil Dawson in attendance.

“Karma, baby! Karma, baby!” Rizz said referencing the dust-up between the two teams during pre-game warm-ups. “Cleveland’s stadium, Phil Dawson was there, and the Browns won on a missed field goal. You can’t make it up.”
