Back the Blue is a Common Sense Approach For News/Talk Stations

0

Unfortunately in 2023, common sense is far too uncommon.

We’ve lived in a world for the last three years where there have been serious conversations on defunding some of the largest police departments in the country. These conversations have been pushed by organizations that have been funded, in large part, by corporate America.

As a result, we’ve been stuck in an odd environment where supporting your area law enforcement has been unusual, or somehow political in nature. No longer is it just common sense to support the men and women in Blue broadly, but of course, if there is corruption or a tragic mistake, you call it out when necessary and hold those involved accountable for their actions.

While living in such a bizarre time is not beneficial for society at large, it could be good for your station and show.

At KCMO Talk Radio, we recently launched a “Back the Blue” Tour. The idea came from a phone call I received late last year from a Kansas City area police chief. He asked me if I would host a show at his headquarters. He suggested it would help boost morale within the department given that most of the Kansas City media doesn’t give them a fair shake. He added that a large percentage of the department listens to the show and the station and that they would roll out the red carpet in any way possible.

It was a compelling idea, but I didn’t want it to be a one-off. It felt like it could be part of something bigger.

We got through the 2022 election season and got to work on this in 2023. There were some minor bumps in the road that delayed our initial plans, but we got it off the ground in recent weeks to great success.

The KCMO Talk Radio inaugural “Back the Blue” Tour at an area police department far exceeded expectations. The format for the show was to blend a regular “News of the Day” show with a handful of guests from the department who could take us behind the scenes on new initiatives, community involvement, and highlight the men and women who have done great work recently, and in some cases, saved lives of area residents.

Rather than only knowing the names of cops after they end up on the wrong side of a shooting or an arrest, we did our best to give the audience a chance to learn the names of the officers doing great work every day in their backyard, while largely going unnoticed.

The department even allowed us to get earned media coverage as they notified all KC area media of our show appearance prior to the visit, while also sharing clips, photos, and videos from the event on their Facebook page, which reaches tens of thousands of area residents.

Add in the sales possibilities and we believe we have a home run event to build off of in Kansas City. The Tour can have multiple sponsors, there can be a recruitment sponsorship element given the shortage for many police departments in 2023, while a digital component can be included since all the interviews were podcasted and shared to a page on our website

And the icing on the cake came after the show, as within a couple of hours of the program ending, we had half a dozen inquiries from other area police departments asking if they could be next on the “Back the Blue” Tour.

I can’t say which one will be next, yet, but I can confidently say there will be a next one. And then a  “next” after that.

In a world gone crazy, be the common sense. We apply it to our shows every day, now there’s an opportunity to localize, build a bond and make a buck. That’s a triple-win in my book.

Is FS1 Having Trouble Finding a New Co-Host For Skip Bayless?

0

It’s been almost a month since Shannon Sharpe left Undisputed on FS1, leaving host Skip Bayless without a debate partner.

It appears now that the network’s inability presently to land a suitable replacement is the reason why the show will not return until August 28.

Bayless announced Wednesday on Twitter that the program will be on hiatus another two months.

Front Office Sports reported Thursday that sources familiar with the situation at FS1 say there isn’t a ton of interest in the role opposite Bayless. Bayless has final say on the hire, so that has presented challenges in figuring out a path forward.

Sharpe is yet to reveal a new landing spot, and ESPN recently laid off several longtime on-air personalities, leaving the show with options.

“Shannon’s exit moved way faster than they expected,” one source was quoted by FOS. “So they had no choice but to go on hiatus. Skip has never done anything like this during all his years at FS1 or ESPN. Not being on the air during all these NBA moves is killing him.”

Bernstein & Holmes Blast ESPN For Comparing Joey Chestnut to Bill Russell

Competitive eating legend Joey Chestnut won his 16th Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest title on the 4th of July, and the ESPN commentators drew an interesting comparison that got 670 The Score hosts Laurence Holmes and Dan Bernstein fired up on Thursday.

Talking about the greatness of Chestnut as a competitive eater, Rich Shea, president of Major League Eating and broadcaster, said his 16 hot dog eating titles made basketball and civil rights icon Bill Russell’s accomplishments “look pedestrian.”

Bernstein said that was just a case of speaking without thinking.

“Sometimes, thought starts in the brain, thought works its way down into the chamber and it loads itself and you lock the bolt,” Bernstein said. “And sometimes you just gotta unlock the bolt and remove the thought from the chamber.”

Bernstein added the comparison and Shea downplaying Russell’s accomplishments was just too wild to believe.

“Here’s what I needed in that moment,” Holmes had said previously about the clip. “In that moment, I needed Will Smith to appear I need him to walk up to the broadcast booth and go, ‘Keep Bill Russell’s name out your f–king mouth!’ And slap the both of them.”

Both mocked the line about Russell just being “fine” compared to Chestnut.

“You know him with all of his championships and him being first at things and this civil rights leadership stuff,” Holmes said. “But let me tell you something right now about this is where it’s at. Getting these glizzys down, that’s what he does.”

Buck Reising: NBA Won’t Help Ratings With In-Season Tournament During NFL Season

0

The NBA is going to be completing its new In-Season Tournament later this year during what 104.5 The Zone host Buck Reising believes is a really inopportune time.

Reising said Thursday on The Buck Reising Show that if the NBA hoped to capitalize on a TV audience, they shouldn’t be going head-to-head with an important part of the NFL regular season.

“It is such a farce what the NBA is trying to do in an effort to stave off the NFL,” Reising said at the start of his show. The semifinals and finals of the tournament will be held December 7-9 in Las Vegas. The NBA and NFL will go head-to-head that night opening Week 14 with the Patriots taking on the Steelers.

For the championship on December 9, there doesn’t appear to be much conflict. No NFL games are scheduled that Saturday night, and college football will only feature the Army/Navy game that afternoon. The Heisman Trophy will be handed out that night.

The NBA is hoping that by holding the conclusion of the tournament that weekend, additional regular season viewership would come the league’s way. Reising pointed out that as part of the league’s new collective bargaining agreement, the incentive for the players to compete is there, with prize money up for grabs and stats contributing to regular season averages.

“Now that’s fine, but if your goal is to try and attract people’s attention during your regular season, would it not be best to try and figure out a time where it does not conflict with the biggest and baddest of sports in this country at arguably its most critical time?” Reising asked.

“December and January in the NFL are the most important months of the season,” he said.

Reising pointed to the NFL also having a footprint over Christmas the last couple of years. Games during the final weeks of the regular season that have playoff implications overshadow the NBA schedule on Christmas Day. Despite ratings for the NBA being up 5% year over year for its Christmas Day slate at 4.271 million, it paled in comparison to the numbers FOX (25.9 million), CBS (22.6 million) and NBC (17.1 million) saw for their NFL games over the course of the afternoon and evening.

“Not only are they losing the competition to the NFL on properties that the NBA already owned, Christmas Day was the NBA, and now we have NFL games on Christmas Day,” he said. “And now we have NFL games across the Christmas weekend in a way that completely smothers one of the NBA’s marquee weekends, marquee days, marquee competitions. That’s when they put some of their best matchups of the regular season.”

The NBA will get a break from holiday head-to-heads with the NFL after this year as Christmas falls on a Wednesday in 2024. The holiday is on a Thursday in 2025, so undoubtedly the NFL will schedule another tripleheader.

Pat McAfee Mocks Jim Costa for Scolding Jameson Williams on Twitter

Suspended Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams had video of him lighting fireworks at 1:15 in the morning the night of July 4 circulate on social media since the holiday, and 97.1 The Ticket host Jim Costa’s reporting of the video drew Pat McAfee’s attention.

Costa tweeted the video out saying that while he totally understands celebrating the holiday with fireworks, he thought it was probably better for Williams to leave the pyrotechnics to the professionals.

On Thursday, McAfee played the video and showed Costa’s tweet. McAfee joked on Costa a little bit for the reporting, but at first agreed that Williams took a bit of a risk doing what he did.

“I like that he’s having fun enjoying his life. But with that being said, these things are no joke,” McAfee said. “These things are the real deal.”

Pat said messing around with fireworks is dangerous, but Costa probably needed to lighten up some.

“So I appreciate Costa’s messaging, but with that being said, mind your f–king business!” McAfee said. “It’s the 4th of July, Jim. Jim, mind your own business, pal!”

“The guy’s not scared to gamble,” McAfee added, making a crack at Williams’ six-game suspension for sports betting. “He’s not scared to roll the dice a little bit. He’s not scared of it.”

Still, while plenty felt Costa was being too critical of Williams, it’s not wrong to point out that Williams was in a slightly dangerous position.

“It’s easy to say, ‘Hey Jim shut the f–k up,'” he said. “But also Jim has a point.”

FOX Officially Adds Mark Ingram II to Big Noon Kickoff

An SEC legend is invading Big Ten territory. Mark Ingram II has officially been announced as the newest member of the panel on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff

The 2009 Heisman Trophy Winner will join Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Urban Meyer and host Rob Stone on the show this season. He replaces Reggie Bush, who reportedly left FOX amid a contract dispute.

“I’m thrilled to join FOX Sports and Big Noon Kickoff,” Ingram said in a press release.  “I can’t wait to feel the energy and excitement every Saturday, alongside some of the most talented and entertaining names in our sport, at the biggest games in college football – I’m ready for the Fall!”

Adding Ingram to the mix definitely adds to the rivalries on set. In addition to Quinn and Leinart being on opposite sides of the Notre Dame/USC rivalry, Meyer’s 2008 Florida team defeated Ingram’s Crimson Tide en route to a national championship. Ingram and the Tide returned the favor en route to their own title in 2009.

Mark Ingram played for the Saints, Ravens and Texans during his 12 years in the NFL. He was selected to the Pro Bowl three times.

Mark Levin Book Will Be Carried at Target After Pushback

0

Late Wednesday evening, conservative radio host Mark Levin alleged he was informed Target would not offer his book for sale. However, due to pushback, the retailer has reportedly reversed course.

In a tweet, Levin shared that his upcoming book “The Democrat Party Hates America” wouldn’t be sold at Target “because it might offend Democrats”. He called the move “pathetic” before pushing potential buyers to other avenues.

On Thursday afternoon, Levin said that he had been told by the book’s publisher that Target had indeed reneged on its initial position and would list the book for sale.

“You folks are an immense force for free speech and market capitalism, and conservative authors and audiences everywhere will benefit from your patriotism,” Levin tweeted to supporters.

“I could not be more proud of you — not only for how this specific case turned out, as there will undoubtedly be more of this — but because you’ve made it clear that you’ve had enough and will exercise your enormous power. The silent majority is silent no longer.”

The Democrat Party Hates America” is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, September 23rd.

Andy Gresh: Social Media Starting to Feel Like ‘Where Am I? Why am I Here?’

0

We are in an age of uncertainty when it comes to social media. Twitter isn’t what it used to be and that has opened the door for all kinds of competitors to try and steal some of the microblogging platform’s user base. It is very confusing for Andy Gresh.

“There’s Twitter Spaces, right? Where people can go and gather and talk, right? Then there’s Threads, which is Elon Musk’s way of trying to create Instagram. Is that the gist?” he asked his producers on Thursday’s edition of Gresh & Fauria on WEEI.

When he was informed that Threads was actually Meta’s attempt to take on Twitter, Gresh admitted that he is not sure what any of the new Twitter competitors actually do.

“How do I find Threads? Do I go to Instagram” Christian Fauria asked.

The duo was trying to get to the bottom of a post from free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who took to the new platform to explain how disappointed he was to find bacon in his clam chowder during a recent trip to Boston.

Gresh noted that it was interesting that they are discussing a controversy that happened on day one of the platform’s existence. If Threads isn’t going to capture everyone’s imagination, it will at least matter to Boston sports fans for a little while.

After multiple listeners joined the show’s Twitch stream to add their commentary and the findings of their own digital sleuthing to the discussion of Hopkins’ Threads post, Gresh admitted that the social media was not as easy to follow as it used to be.

“‘Where am I? Why am I here?’ That’s what it feels like.”

Twitter Threatening Legal Action Against New Competitor Threads

0

After the launch of Threads — a Twitter alternative from Instagram — the Elon Musk-owned social media company is now reportedly threatening legal action.

A purported screenshot of an email from Alex Spiro, an attorney representing X Corp. — the parent company to Twitter — to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg reads, “I write on behalf of X Corp., as successor in interest to Twitter, Inc. (“Twitter”). Based on recent reports regarding your recently launched “Threads” app, Twitter has serious concerns that Meta Platforms (“Meta”) has engaged in systemic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property,” according to a report from Semafor’s Maxwell Tani.

“Twitter intends to strictly enforce its intellectual property rights, and demands that Meta take immediate steps to stop using any Twitter trade secrets or other highly confidential information,” Spiro wrote in a letter obtained exclusively by Semafor. “Twitter reserves all rights, including, but not limited to, the right to seek both civil remedies and injunctive relief without further notice to prevent any further retention, disclosure, or use of its intellectual property by Meta.”

On Wednesday, Instagram debuted Threads, a text-based social media app with a striking resemblance to Twitter. Spiro alleged that Meta hired several former Twitter employees to create a “copycat” app.

The upstart app saw 10 million users sign up in the first seven hours. That number has since risen to over 30 million.

Todd Starnes: My Show Now Is On More Stations Than It Was With Fox News Radio

0

Conservative radio host Todd Starnes celebrated the anniversary of his current program on Wednesday, July 5th, and mentioned that there were many who viewed his exit from Fox News as the potential end of his career.

However, The Todd Starnes Show host argued that the insinuation couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Welcome to the Todd Starnes radio program. We’re celebrating our six-year anniversary today. You know, it’s funny. A lot of people said, ‘Starnes, when you leave Fox, that’s gonna be it. When that’s it, you’re done. You’ve reached the zenith of your career and you’re done’. Well, it turned out that that was not the case,” revelled Starnes. “We actually are broadcasting on more radio stations now than I ever was when I was working at Fox News. We have seen tremendous growth. And the only people responsible for that are you.

“We have the greatest audience in all of talk radio, and I just want to say thank you, and especially those folks who have been with us from day one…We’re just honored that so many of you call in and but anyway, today we’re celebrating our six-year anniversary and I just want to say thank you for that.”

The 55-year-old Starnes — who now owns and operates Memphis news/talk station KWAM — hosted Fox News & Commentary with Fox News Radio from 2005 until 2019.
