San Diego Sports 760 Signs Jon & Jim to 2 Year Extension

Listeners of San Diego Sports 760 will be pleased to know that Jim Russell and Jon Schaeffer aren’t going anywhere for at least the next couple of years.

Russell posted on social media on Thursday that both he and Schaeffer’s contracts have been extended through 2025.

“I love talking all things San Diego sports everyday with all of you, and look forward to doing that for the next two years!” Russell wrote.

iHeart San Diego/Riverside rebranded its sports station and switched its frequency a year ago. The station had been operating as XTRA 1360 before moving to a bandwidth that has a better nighttime signal.

Marks & Reese Connect Bryce Harper to Fan That Inspired Tuesday Home Run

It’s been a whirlwind last two days for 94WIP caller Chuck in Mt. Airy. He served as inspiration for Phillies star Bryce Harper, who hit his 300th career home run earlier this week.

Harper said as much in his post-game press conference on Tuesday, and Chuck was over the moon when he caught word of the shout out. On Thursday, Chuck and Bryce had a moment to talk to one another.

This was thanks to Jon Marks and Ike Reese, who interviewed Harper Thursday. Marks did say that Harper did manage to set an unfortunate precedent though.

“Now every caller wants dedicated home runs. It’s a national story,” Marks said. “Chuck’s been on TV and radio for the last two days straight. This is what you’ve created with our show and the station, Bryce, thank you.”

Chuck added his thanks to Harper too because he’s made his week, month and year and then some.

“It’s been a great last couple of days and next to my kids being born, this has been the greatest moment of my life,” Chuck said. “So I appreciate you and I thank you for being a great Phillie, for coming on here listening to us, and shouting me out, out of the blue, for real.”

Harper, who admitted he is a regular WIP listener, said the feeling he has for Phillies fans and Philadelphia sports fans in general is mutual.

“We’re all a family. You guys pull for us, we pull for everybody,” Harper said. “I appreciate you so much and thanks for the words, thanks for being kind. I really appreciate that, thank you.”

Bill Cowher: Teams Still Reach Out, But The NFL Today is Enough

Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher doesn’t see himself coaching an NFL team again any time soon.

The Super Bowl champion was asked by Pat McAfee on Thursday if teams still show an interest in hiring him to a coaching role, and Cowher said he still gets floated the idea.

“I wouldn’t say every year but pretty much very often,” Cowher said.

Bill added that he got a sense of normalcy after stepping down from the Steelers in 2007. He said he’s too far removed to even give serious consideration to coaching again.

“I just said, ‘I’m good,'” he said. “And plus I really enjoy being at CBS. It gave me a little bit of my fill during the season of being able to watch football with a bunch of football guys.”

“We sit there every Sunday and watch every game,” Cowher added. “I talk to a lot of coaches around the league, GMs around the league, and just give them my feedback – what I see.”

Cowher said he’s still very much involved with the NFL, but he’s just not interested in going back to coaching.

JOX 94.5 Adds Molly Robinson to Midday Show

Molly Robinson is the newest addition to JOX 94.5 in Birmingham. The recent Nebraska grad made her debut on the station Monday as part of the midday show 3 Man Front.

Following the departure of Matt McClearin, JOX 94.5 expanded 3 Man Front from two hours to four. Robinson joins hosts Landrum Roberts, Pat Smith and producer and co-host Conrad Van Order on the show.

Robinson is fresh out of school. She was a member of the dance team in Lincoln. She also was a production intern for Playfly Sports and for the school’s athletic department.

WEEI & NESN Raise Over $4 Million in 21st Annual Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon

The Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon is a major annual event in Boston. Every year NESN and WEEI work together to tell the stories of patients helped by the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and raise money for the cause.

On Thursday, WEEI released the total for the 2023 event. The radio station, NESN and sponsor Arbella Insurance raised over $4 million this year.

The money benefits cancer patients in the Boston area. This year marked the 21st year of the Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon.

Since its launch in 2002, the event has raised more than $70 million.

WEEI released a list of all of the guests that made time to come on the air and ask listeners to donate. Boston sports legends, current players and manager, and even the governor of Massachusetts joined the fundraising efforts.

Grace Curley: Greg Kelly Doesn’t Have a Reputation for Peddling False Stories

Earlier this week, Newsmax host Greg Kelly alleged there is an audio recording of President Joe Biden that will do irreparable harm to him. Grace Curley believes the claim.

During his cable program, Kelly — who also hosts a radio show on 77 WABC — said “There is an audio tape — I am told by people in the know, not necessarily in government, not necessarily out of government, I can’t say too much, but there is incontrovertible evidence of Joe Biden’s corruption that is about to be made public. It’s not going to happen tomorrow. It’s not going to happen before Labor Day, but it will happen sometime between Labor Day and Halloween. This tape will be made public.”

He continued by stating that the tape is “incriminating” enough for the President to not seek re-election and that the White House is “worried” about it being published.

During The Grace Curley Show Thursday, the Boston-based host shared her belief that Kelly’s reputation should give him the benefit of the doubt in the situation.

“My question for you is: Do you believe Greg Kelly? My heart wants to, my brain is skeptical though. Because we’ve been told things before,” Curley said. “We’ve been told that you know, ‘Oh, I have the magic key that’s gonna unlock the puzzle or unlock the door to this and it’s gonna break the whole thing open. We’re gonna release the Kraken’. And a lot of times people come up empty.

“But here’s what I will say about Greg Kelly. He makes waves because he has great monologues and he’s not afraid to say what he thinks. But he’s never really said anything like this, as far as making claims that don’t come true. That’s not really his brand, to throw out bombshells that he can’t back up. This is the first time I’ve ever heard him break a story like this and say ‘Just wait, there’s more coming’. So I kind of tend to believe him.”

Ryan Clark: ‘I’m Excited’ About Different Broadcasting Opportunity

Ryan Clark will be the new host of Inside the NFL when it makes its debut on the CW next week. He told Dan Patrick that it is a major step forward in his broadcasting career.

“I’ve always been fascinated with that part of the business, and I think even more than anything, it’s being an analyst, being looked at in that box for so long throughout my career, and now having an opportunity to do something different. I’m excited about that,” he said on the Thursday edition of The Dan Patrick Show.

Clark noted that he has been in a similar role before on his podcast The Pivot. When it comes to TV though, he has been paying attention to some of the best in the business at hosting a panel discussion.

He cited Dan Patrick as an influence. He also noted that he has taken notes from talking to and watching Laura Rutledge, Scott Van Pelt and Mike Greenberg.

The new cast of Inside the NFL includes Channing Crowder, Jay Cutler, Chris Long and Chad Ochocinco. Patrick asked Clark if he had beef with any of those players during their on-field careers.

The former Steeler revealed that he was one of many players in the league that did not like Cutler. Clark said many defensive players in the NFL thought Cutler was arrogant.

It was something that he was worried about when the crew sat for its first rehearsal.

“I was very aware of that. I felt that feeling,” he told Patrick. “But once he sat down and started to spit his knowledge, tell his stories from his perspective, you know, you just saw how good he could be at the job. And it’s good to have somebody on the panel who has sort of that demeanor to bring that side to the show.”

Inside the NFL makes its 2023 season debut next week. The show is airing on The CW after spending the last three years on Paramount+.

Brent Musburger Returning to TV with VSiN, DraftKings Network

Brent Musburger is coming back to TV. His VSiN show Brent Musburger’s Countdown to Kickoff, is joining the DraftKings Network lineup for the football season.

It is part of a slate of new shows announced for the FAST channel on Thursday. Programs from VSiN, Meadowlark Media, and DraftKings originals have been added.

“Since launching DraftKings Network in May, we have expanded our programming portfolio and enhanced our football offerings to satisfy the interests of our audience,” DraftKings Vice President of Content, Stacie McCollum, said in a press release. “The NFL season is the busiest time of year for sports betting, daily fantasy sports and this new lineup will further fuel our DraftKings customers’ passion for sports with 24/7 live and on-demand entertainment.” 

Musburger is one of the pioneers of the pregame show format. He debuted on The NFL Today on CBS fifty years ago. With Countdown to Kickoff, he will focus on gambling insights ahead of each Sunday’s NFL slate. 

VSiN launched in 2017 with Brent Musburger as its first high profile talent. It was launched by Musburger’s brother Todd and Todd’s son Brian. It was later acquired by DraftKings in 2021.

Other VSiN shows joining the DraftKings Network lineup for football season include The Lombardi Line with Michael Lombardi, Stormy Buonantony and Femi Abebefe and A Numbers Game with Gil Alexander.

DraftKings Network launched earlier this year. The content can be seen on Samsung TV Plus and at DraftKingsNetwork.com.

Jason Rantz: Conservatives Have to Work Harder to Make Bestseller Lists

770 KTTH host Jason Rantz is making preparations to debut a new book and has shared his belief that as a conservative radio host, it’s more difficult for him to make a bestseller list.

What’s Killing America is slated to release on Tuesday, September 26th. In a post to his Substack, Rantz shared that he set an internal goal for pre-sales of the book, and is close to reaching the undisclosed milestone.

“Preorders are integral to a book’s success and can help land me on a bestseller list. Conservatives have to work extra hard and I hope you’re able to help me out,” the Seattle-based host said. “Plus, the more we sell, the more likely I’ll be able to do book signings.”

Earlier this month, Rantz shared that he was keeping a close eye on the situation with Mark Levin’s book. Levin has faced pushback from Target and now Facebook for the title — The Democrat Party Hates America. The conservative radio host alleged Target initially declined to carry his book in stores before reversing course. He later claimed his publisher was unable to purchase advertising with Facebook and Instagram due to the title.

“I’m paying such close attention to this. And well, I’m not sure I would say I’m anxious at this point — mostly because I generally don’t feel anxiety like that — but I’m hyper-aware,” Rantz said at the time. “And I’m certainly trying to think about ways that I can get around that. And the truth is they could easily destroy the success of this book.”

Sports Media Reacts to Record Breaking Nebraska Volleyball Crowd

The sports media took notice of women’s college volleyball Wednesday night. The University of Nebraska hosted a crowd of 92,000, the largest in world history to watch a women’s sporting event, inside of Memorial stadium in Lincoln. 

The Cornhuskers defeated Omaha in straight sets, but bigger story was in the stands.

It as a record setting crowd for women’s sports. It was also the largest crowd Memorial Stadium has drawn for any event in history.

While women’s sports continue to grow in popularity, the scenes emanating from Lincoln was enough to turn even more heads than usual. 

The game was discussed on multiple national sports shows Thursday morning.

Other sports media personalities weighed in as well, awestruck by the sight of more people showing up to watch women’s volleyball than have ever poured into the stadium to watch Nebraska’s football team.
