NBC News Adds CNN Reporter Chloe Melas

NBC News has announced Chloe Melas will join the outlet as its new entertainment reporter.

Melas covered Hollywood and entertainment for CNN across its television networks and digital platforms.

“I landed my first job at CNN as a News Assistant right out of college, and I loved it so much that I returned 7 years later. Last week, this latest professional chapter came to a close,” Melas wrote in an Instagram post announcing the move. “It has truly been a masterclass in journalism.”

In addition to her work at CNN, Melas also previously spent time at VH1 and launched the entertainment site HollywoodLife with Penske Media Corp.

“We are pleased to announce that Chloe Melas is joining NBC News as an entertainment correspondent based in New York,” NBC News Senior Vice President Catherine Kim told staffers in an internal memo. “If you know Chloe by reputation, you know she is a relentless, ambitious, prolific reporter who expands the definition of entertainment reporting.

Her first day with NBC News will be on Monday, August 21st.

Sage Steele on ESPN: ‘There Were Different Rules for Me Than Everyone Else’

Sage Steele gave her first interview following her ESPN exit to Megyn Kelly on Thursday. She appeared on the former FOX News host’s SiriusXM show to talk about the lawsuit she settled with the network and her reasons for leaving.

“All I ever wanted was consistency,” Steele said.

She came under fire in 2021 for an appearance on Jay Cutler’s podcast. On that show, she called the network’s policy requiring employees to be vaccinated against Covid-19 “sick and scary” and questioned the legitimacy of former president Barack Obama identifying as Black.

Shortly after that, Steele was sidelined when she contracted Covid-19. She claims she was told she had to apologize for her comments before she would be allowed back on the network.

Her argument was that ESPN’s stance on political speech was hypocritical. It didn’t seem to be a problem for the network when her colleagues made statements about the murder of George Floyd and racial justice on ESPN. 

“If we are allowing my peers to go on social media, much less on our own airwaves, saying things…that have nothing to do with sports that are political…then I should be allowed on my personal time to give my opinion on my experiences personally, without telling others what to do…I think that’s just what breaks my heart – that there were different rules for me than everyone else.”

Steele also reiterated her belief that she was bullied by the network and her colleagues. She said that there was no support for her in Bristol and that she was “scared” to return to work.

“I don’t care anymore because this is my experience,” she said of telling her story. “I’m allowed to feel the way I feel. When you try to silence me, I’m done.”

Pat McAfee Show Makes ESPN Debut September 7

ESPN will officially become the new home of The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday, September 7. The network revealed Thursday that the show will be part of a new six-hour morning block also featuring Get Up and First Take.

“We can’t wait for Pat and his team to bring a fresh new energy to ESPN’s weekday lineup, led by some of the most prominent, creative and authentic voices in sports,” Burke Magnus, president of content at ESPN, said in a press release. “The Pat McAfee Show will redefine what success looks like across multiple ESPN platforms and will bring a new, contemporary audience to our afternoon time block. It’s a perfect fit.”

The show is joining ESPN in a multi-platform capacity. In addition to the two hours on linear TV, the entire three-hour show will air on ESPN+ and the company’s YouTube channel.

The ESPN debut of The Pat McAfee Show will originate from the show’s ThunderDome studios in Indianapolis. The network will take the show on the road though. Friday shows on some weeks will originate from the site of College GameDay, where McAfee serves as an analyst. He has already announced that the first such road show will be in Tuscaloosa on September 8 ahead of Alabama’s game against Texas.

ESPN is planning future announcements regarding regular guests on the show. The network has already said that McAfee is free to welcome all of his regular guests, regardless of where they work. 

The press release confirms that new Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers will continue to make weekly appearances with McAfee and crew.

Red Apple Audio Networks had reason to celebrate Thursday. The group eclipsed 200 affiliates for its wide array of talk radio offerings.

All programming from Red Apple Audio Networks is distributed from the 77 WABC studios. In the last 18 months, the group has grown to the 200 affiliates and includes programming in 15 of the top 25 markets in the country.

The network currently syndicates shows The Cats Roundtable with John Catsimatidis, The Larry Kudlow Show, The Rita Cosby Show, The Judge Jeanine Pirro Show, The Greg Kelly Show, The Rudy Giuliani Show, Sundays with Sinatra with Joe Piscopo, and The Other Side of Midnight with Frank Morano.

93.7 The Fan’s Colin Dunlap Helps Listener Find Treatment for Alcoholism

Sports radio hosts across the country have a variety of unique relationships with their most dedicated listeners. Wednesday night in Pittsburgh, Colin Dunlap realized that he had the opportunity and resources to help change one of those listeners’ lives.

Loyal caller “Matt in Florida” joined  93.7 The Fan to chime in on former West Virginia basketball coach. During the course of their conversation, Matt admitted that he is a functioning alcoholic. 

“After work, I have some beers and, you know, this and the other and just kind of chill out,” he said. “I would never think about putting anybody else in harm. And if I know, ‘okay, I had a couple of beers.’ I’m not getting behind the wheel. I’m not putting anybody at risk. I will call an Uber.”

Matt admitted that his life is at a tipping point. His wife has threatened to leave him if he does not seek help. That is when Dunlap saw the chance to intervene.

He asked Matt what he was willing to do about the situation. Matt answered that he has tried to get help and he is currently trying to stay sober, but it isn’t easy.

“What if I told you if I put you on hold and you gave our producer your number that I would help you in Florida get somebody? What if I told you that?” Dunlap asked.

Matt said it would be something he would appreciate tremendously, especially if he knew listeners in Pittsburgh were encouraging him and supporting him.

Dunlap promised to call Matt when his show was over and get the process started.

“We’re going to make it work, and it doesn’t need to be public. We don’t need to tell everybody what the outcome of all of this is. Matt, I’m going to put you on hold in a minute, but you need to promise that I’m not going to do this in vein and then you’re not going to follow up.”

The First TV To Broadcast Highlights of Erick Erickson’s The Gathering Conference

Erick Erickson is set for his annual The Gathering conference in Atlanta this weekend, and the events will be broadcast on The First TV.

The theme for the conference — which will feature many 2024 Republican presidential hopefuls — is “Forward: Which Way”.

“It’s my gathering for my radio audience and online audience. The Erick Erickson Show will circulate the audio of the speakers in my podcast and on my radio show,” Erickson said previously.

But The First TV will now broadcast some of the highlights of the conversations with the prospective Republican nominees over the weekend.

Noticeably absent from The Gathering is former President Donald Trump. Erickson has been a heavy critic of Trump. However, the former President is the only leading Republican not in attendance at Erickson’s conference.

Pat McAfee Calls Burke Magnus ‘An Ally’ to His Show

Pat McAfee is not shy with his feeling about anything. If there is a subject or person on his mind, he will be honest with his assessment, whether it is good or bad.

When it comes to his new boss at ESPN, Burke Magnus, McAfee’s impression is nothing but positive. On his Thursday show, McAfee said that not only is Magnus a fan and ally of the show, but he has also been helpful in helping the show think about new ways to present content.

“I think he kind of forecasted some of the stuff that was going to potentially come,” McAfee said. “I think he’s a good exec. Like, I think he’s good.”

After news broke that Pat McAfee was looking to find a new home and distribution deal for his show, he took meetings with several executives. He said that that experience and ones before it have taught him just how special Burke Magnus is.

“Everybody assumes that people in powerful positions are good. Well, we have learned that is not true. Couldn’t be further from that in a lot of different genres of business.”

He noted that if he did not think Magnus was the right boss for himself or the show, he would not even mention his relationship with the man, and pointed to how Magnus has eased his mind with some of the uncertainty surrounding how The Pat McAfee Show would sound under the ESPN umbrella.

In an interview with Richard Deitsch of The Athletic, Magnus said that McAfee would be allowed to keep having Ian Rapaport, Shams Charania and other league insiders from outside of the ESPN family on his show, but that the network would hope that McAfee would want to expand the show’s pool of goto voices.

“Everything he says is real and everything I feel like I’ve said is not a lie to people publicly, but whenever Burke comes out and solidifies it, I’m very thankful for that,” McAfee said. “Because Burke could have just like said, ‘Yeah, we’re working through that’ because I probably saves his ass with his people. Instead, he’s like, ‘Hey, this is how this goes.’ I’m very thankful for it.”

McAfee was due to welcome Adam Schefter to the show in a later segment and said that is a good example of the mutual benefit of letting McAfee continue to have his regular guests on. No other show can say they have regular conversations with both Schefter and Rapaport, two of the NFL’s most connected reporters.

Jason Rantz: With New Book Out Soon, I’m Paying Close Attention to Mark Levin Situation

On two separate occasions, Mark Levin has shared roadblocks he has encountered while trying to promote his new book. 770 KTTH host Jason Rantz also has a book due at the same time as Levin, and shared he is monitoring the situation closely.

During The Jason Rantz Show Wednesday, the Seattle host said Levin’s current plight highlights the disparity conservative authors face compared to their liberal counterparts.

“This brings attention to the plight that conservative authors face. And maybe it’s a little bit less important with Mark Levin, because he has such a large platform in addition to his radio show, which is on KTTH, he’s got his TV show on Fox News,” said Rantz. “He’s got over a million followers on social media. So it’s a little bit easier for him to cope.

“But I keep thinking about ‘What if that were to happen to me and my book?’ because that would really severely hurt. I’m not going to be able to sell a bunch of books just on this show. And as much as I hope every single person who’s listening will go ahead and pre-order on Amazon What’s Killing America, I’m not going to turn this show into five days a week, non-stop promotion of my book.”

During The Mark Levin Show earlier this week, the longtime conservative pundit shared that his upcoming book — The Democrat Party Hates America — was unable to place ads on Facebook and Instagram due to the title.

Rantz shared that he can’t afford to undergo the same fate as Levin.

“I’m paying such close attention to this. And well, I’m not sure I would say I’m anxious at this point — mostly because I generally don’t feel anxiety like that — but I’m hyper-aware. And I’m certainly trying to think about ways that I can get around that. And the truth is they could easily destroy the success of this book,” Rantz concluded.

Gregg Giannotti: ‘Awesome’ That Fred Toucher ‘Went There’ on Mike Greenberg

Following Fred Toucher calling ESPN host Mike Greenberg a “no-talent prick” on his morning show on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston, professionals from around the world of sports media weighed in on the situation. Toucher himself addressed his remarks on the air Thursday morning, expressing how Greenberg seemed to ignore the facets of radio that make the medium unique to listeners.

Boomer Esiason, who currently hosts the simulcast morning program, Boomer & Gio, on WFAN and CBS Sports Network, used to appear with Toucher & Rich for certain segments. He was not surprised at all by what Toucher had to say.

“Did he call him a professional? Did he call him a legend in the business [or] did he call him an educator?,” co-host Gregg Giannotti said to Esiason on WFAN. “Nothing like that. What he did call him was a ‘no-talent prick,’ which is the funniest thing I’ve read all week!”

Toucher was prompted to make his remarks about Greenberg after the ESPN host went on a podcast and spoke about how important it was to write out teases for a program. He divulged that it does not matter how informative or entertaining you are just as long as one is able to keep their audience engaged.

Neither Esiason or Giannotti seem to have anything against Greenberg and understand what was said and understand the perspective he is coming from after decades in the business.

“That’s a formula,” Esiason said. “It’s not free-flowing [and] it’s not improv. It’s just, ‘Here’s the script. Follow the script, and this is the way you do it.’”

“Very rarely do I give you a good tease if I think I have something because I don’t want to be called a ‘no-talent prick,’” Giannotti said. “I just want to do what we do here, you know? That is great that he went there though. That is awesome.”

Michelle Beadle, Cody Decker to Replace Danny Kannel, Dusty Dvoracek on Mad Dog Sports Radio

Plenty of changes are coming to SiriusXM’s proprietary sports radio channel. On the same day that Evan Cohen announced he was leaving the morning show, news has broken that Danny Kannel and Dusty Dvoracek are leaving the channel too. They will be replaced by Michelle Beadle & Cody Decker.

“I’ve been an avid listener to Mad Dog Sports Radio for so long that getting the opportunity to join the lineup and talk all sports, every day, is as good as it gets,” Beadle said in a press release. “Cody is ok, too.”

Beadle & Decker will launch on August 22. The show will air every weekday from 12-3 pm.

“’Mad Dog’ is a name that’s been registering on the sports landscape Richter Scale for years. I’ve been a listener and fan since day one on SiriusXM,” Decker added. “Having the chance to share the airwaves with a daily lineup like this, not to mention to work with a cohost the caliber of Michelle, is something I had only dreamed of. After all these years, she FINALLY gets to work with a complete professional like me.” 

Danny Kanell and Dusty Dvoracek are not leaving SiriusXM. While they are giving up their spot on Mad Dog Sports Radio, they will continue to host Dusty and Danny in the Morning on SiriusXM College Sports every weekday.

“Dusty and Danny are an excellent team, and they continue to be an important part of the SiriusXM family,” said SiriusXM’s VP of Sports Programming Eric Spitz. “Our listeners will continue to hear them regularly on SiriusXM College Sports Radio, sharing their insights into what’s happening on the field, as well as the many intriguing storylines happening now in college sports away from the field of play.”
