Nick Kayal: Notoriety of CNN Covid Experts Has Gone to Their Heads

0

A Twitter spat featuring Joe Rogan and Elon Musk taking on vaccine expert Dr. Peter Hotez raised eyebrows over the weekend. 1210 WPHT morning host Nick Kayal certainly noticed the interaction.

Dr. Hotez took issue with comments made by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about vaccines on the Joe Rogan Experience. After calling Kennedy’s comments “misinformation”, Rogan challenged the doctor to debate RFK Jr. with a $100,000 donation to the charity of his choice. Musk argued that Hotez wouldn’t accept the invitation because “he knows he’s wrong”. He has subsequently declined, with many — including MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan — noting that Hotez has nothing gain from the interaction.

During Kayal and Company Monday morning, the Philadelphia host questioned if the notoriety gained by medical experts during the COVID-19 pandemic has gone to their heads.

“I don’t know if you guys saw this playing out in real-time on Twitter over the weekend, but a lot of people saw it and we’re reacting to it. And my biggest takeaway with this is: It’s amazing to me like these guys like Peter Hotez or any guy that really gained any sort of notoriety or fame during the pandemic because they were like labeled the go-to people on CNN,” said Kayal. “They don’t want to debate you on anything. They just want you to say and take everything that they say is 100% irrefutable gospel.

“Isn’t that really the essence of science guys, like challenging theories and hypotheses and, and, you know, making people think critically about stuff, but yet when it comes to COVID, you’re not allowed to challenge any of these guys that were plastered on your screen for three years. I find that remarkable. And I find it remarkable that you wouldn’t want to debate a guy and oh, by the way, have $100,000 go to a charity of your choice for doing so.”

Jay Bilas: NBA Draft Involves More Educating Fans Now

0

The NBA Draft is set to take place this Thursday, June 22, and will be available for consumers to watch on ESPN, ABC and additional ESPN digital platforms. The consensus No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembaynama should draw interest and subsequently garner high ratings, but there is a preponderance of enticing talents on the board thereafter and a potential flurry of transactions during the event.

Just one week after the conclusion of the NBA Finals, the network will utilize two of its NBA Countdown crew members – Stephen A. Smith and Adrian Wojnarowski – across the coverage, along with basketball analyst JJ Redick and reporters Andraya Carter and Monica McNutt. ESPN Radio will also have coverage of the draft from Barclays Center featuring Marc Kestecher, P.J. Carlesimo and Cory Alexander on the air, and an edition of The Hoop Collective featuring Brian Windhorst.

Jay Bilas will be on the desk for the 21st time for ESPN. He will be an important part of the NBA Draft on ESPN and sit alongside reporter and host Malika Andrews to offer his perspectives on the draftees on Thursday night.

“We always do the very best we can to not only tell you about what the player can and can’t do and where the player projects,” Bilas said, “but [also give] our best judgments as to the fit in the NBA with a particular team and the player’s value and then background information on the player. So many of these players now are younger, and certainly younger than they used to be coming into the process.”

There are many different roads to the NBA, with more and more players deviating from the typical path of playing NCAA college basketball. Instead, the NBA G-League has a developmental basketball team called G-League Ignite, and Overtime launched an amateur league of its own for prospects between the ages of 16 and 20 years old.

“There’s a little bit more [of], ‘Maybe some fans don’t know them as well as we do,’” Bilas said of the current landscape, “so we try to give them a preview of the up-and-coming attractions once they get to the NBA.”

Foreign-born athletes including Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Luka Dončić have left an indelible mark on the league, and Wembanyama is projected to do similarly if everything plays out correctly. Similarly enough in the dichotomy, there are players born in the United States who have fallen drastically short of expectations, including Zion Williamson, Ja Morant and R.J. Barrett, although they had received considerable media attention and associated hype. There has been conversation of late regarding revamping the NBA All-Star Game format to have players from the United States face off against others from around the world, drawing intrigue from fans and media personalities alike. Yet Bilas wants consumers to be aware of the influx of athletes deriving from other countries and willing to recognize that the United States does not own the game of basketball per se.

“I think it’s to be expected that you have great talent coming in internationally,” Bilas said. “I don’t necessarily buy into the idea that basketball’s not taught as well or the same just because international prospects are doing really well. I think we should have expected that, but now the game is coached and taught so well globally that international coaches are the equal of American coaches.”

Jack Armstrong: ‘Mainstream Media Doesn’t Realize They’ve Lost The Room’

0

The arrest and arraignment of former President Donald Trump last week was the hot-button issue in news radio circles. Armstrong & Getty co-host Jack Armstrong believes there’s an underreported aspect of the story.

While reading a portion of a recent opinion column from lawyer Jonathan Turley, Armstrong argued that the mainstream media has lost the pulse of the American people.

“It’s an indictment of the media. After years of advocacy journalism and biased reporting, the public now tunes out the media,” wrote Turley. “This is a strong indictment troubling allegations of evidence, yet it does not matter because the media long ago lost much of the country with one-sided unrelenting coverage.”

“That is so absolutely true,” Armstrong argued. “That might be the least appreciated major story going on in America. Because the media, the mainstream media, obviously doesn’t know that. The majority report on it. The majority of the mainstream media doesn’t realize they’ve lost the room. As, as Jonathan Turley writes, they’ve lost the room.”

“Well, when you’ve been lied to repeatedly, by the same person or people, what’s your reaction in real life?” Joe Getty agreed. “A little disdain, dislike, ignoring them. Actively looking for reasons to contradict what they say.”

Armstrong argued that polling numbers reveal that there is less trust in the current Department of Justice than there was when Bill Barr was the attorney general, but you’re unlikely to see that figure reported.

“It’s going the other direction people’s trust. But yes, this is why and of course, you’re not going to hear from The Washington Post or ABC This Week, or whatever, because they did it and they’re still doing it. You’ve lost at least half the country that tunes out whatever you say. So I don’t know. I don’t know what we do with that going forward. I don’t know how we have a conversation or vote or what happens.”

Ken Carman: Karl Ravech Should Not Be Fired

0

The NCAA Men’s College World Series is underway, and college baseball fans from around the country have been engrossed by the exciting action featuring several Major League Baseball stars of tomorrow. During the weekend alone, five of the six games were decided by one run and included five of the top-eight national seeds. Many of the games were vacillating and decided in the final few innings, including a matchup between Texas Christian University (TCU) and Oral Roberts.

Down 5-3 with one out in the ninth inning, Blaze Brothers hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the ninth inning to give Oral Roberts a 6-5 lead – and the team would go on to win by that score. The issue was that Oral Roberts was the visiting team, meaning the home run could not constitute a walk-off blast. Despite this, ESPN play-by-play announcer Karl Ravech punctuated the moment as if it had decided the game.

“This one is hammered to left field,” Ravech exclaimed. “Did he do it? Yes, sir! Walk-off home run.”

After producers were seemingly yelling in Ravech’s ear to tell him that he messed up the call, Ravech corrected his gaffe by articulating that it was the top of the ninth inning. When the game ended, he took to Twitter to apologize for his mistake before traveling to Boston to call Sunday Night Baseball between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Ravech is particularly busy during this time of year with the college and major league assignments, granting him a sense of understanding from fans and other broadcasters.

Cleveland’s morning radio duo of Ken Carman and Anthony Lima genuinely felt bad for Ravech when he made the mistake and reflected on difficult moments they have endured throughout their broadcast careers. Doing so engendered a feeling of sympathy towards Ravech, who is especially busy during this time of year as his college and major league responsibilities overlap.

“We’re talking about one of your big daddies here,” Carman said Monday on 92.3 The Fan. “I don’t want to upset anybody at the ‘mothership’ over there. I felt bad for people saying he should be fired, [and] I thought that was ridiculous.”

Ravech has been employed by ESPN since 1993 and covered Major League Baseball for the outlet across three decades both as a play-by-play announcer and studio host. The College World Series has been a part of his yearly assignments since 2011, and he had not endured such a transgression in the decade-plus he had called the event quite like Saturday’s ordeal.

“It’s my nightmare scenario,” Lima said. “For everybody in broadcasting, it’s your nightmare scenario when you’re wrong; you’re out of it. It’s not like he obviously wasn’t paying attention [or] didn’t know where he was. I don’t know how Karl Ravech is doing these games.”

The other issue with the call pertains to when Ravech seemingly became aware that the hit was not a walk-off, but proceeded to announce it was TCU who hit the home run to win the game. The third time around, he realized his mistake and affirmed that it was the top of the ninth inning, further accentuating the previous inaccuracy but effectively fulfilling his job. Both Carman and Lima were glad to see Ravech own up to his mistake and do not believe he is going to get relieved of his duties. Instead, it provides consumers an inside look pertaining to the nuance associated with play-by-play announcing and the degree of difficulty associated with the job.

“If you’ve ever heard Marv Albert’s open, he stumbles and bumbles over every open he’s ever had,” Carman said. “When he’d have Bill Parcells, he’s like, ‘The former coach of the – welcome in.’ He always stumbled at the beginning of the games, and he’s a Hall of Famer, well-loved [and] beloved.”

Adrian Wojnarowski Says Twitter Is Less Important to ESPN at NBA Draft

0

ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski will once again be a part of the network’s NBA Draft coverage this year (Thursday, 8 PM ET). He has become known by some for revealing the pick on Twitter ahead of when it is actually announced. However, that is going to change this year.

Wojnarowski was a guest on The Ryen Russillo Podcast and he said that this year, he wants to focus more on storytelling and diving into other things rather than trying to be the first to tweet the pick out.

“Going forward from Yahoo to ESPN and seeing what the responsibility is on the broadcast and feeling like I need to be fully engaged in the show. I’m not doing the picks this year. That doesn’t mean at the top of the draft, something weird is happening at 2 or 3, yes…But, the pick-by-pick, I don’t think it has value anymore for me or ESPN.”

Wojnarowski mentioned that he talked to Malika Andrews, who will be hosting the draft for the second straight year, and she agreed with the decision.

“I started this a long time ago and I had all this information on Yahoo that I was getting in real time, By the time we put it up on the site, it’s vapor. I said Twitter, this is a place for it. I think now, it’s important for me to stay on the top of the trades and the movement and be able to do a little more storytelling of what’s going on on the board in rea-ltime in the draft instead of my head buried trying to get New Orleans’s pick at 14 that’s obviously going to be out momentarily on the show.”

Throughout the busy times on the NBA calendar, Wojnarowski is getting a lot of different information from different people around the NBA. He told Russillo that he is always making judgments on information daily.

“You learn over time track records of people with you and sometimes you learn lessons the hard way very early on. Decisions I would have made in my first, second, third year at Yahoo are different then ones I make now at ESPN having covered the league on a full-time basis for a decade and a half.”

Wojnarowski made it clear that it is important to have relationships at all levels of the league because it allows you to look at the situation differently. While nobody can get every report right, he knows he is being judged on the information he puts out.

“You better have relationships at all the levels. Ownership, presidents, GM, coaching, player, league office, union, agents. All of them together create a prism to see situations through and looking through any one of those prisms can often be trouble. A lot of these people that you are talking to, you are talking to very often all year long. You rely on your ability to trust people, trust the information, and do the best you can.”

Jim Ross Stepping Away from AEW

0

On Saturday morning, Jim Ross posted a picture to Twitter with a black eye following a fall he endured hours beforehand. While he still made it to Chicago, Ill. to commentate the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) debut of Collision, viewers noted that his voice sounded hoarse and gruff throughout the broadcast. It was obvious to most viewers that he was pushing through the event, and after evaluating himself afterwards, he was less than satisfied with his performance. As a result, Ross took to Twitter to announce that he would be stepping away from the promotion to heal.

Ross has taken leaves of absence throughout his time with AEW in the past, including in 2021 after being treated for skin cancer. At the moment, there is no timetable for his return, but his self-awareness received praise from wrestlers and fans on social media in order to keep the focus on the matches and its wrestlers.

The event, which took place at the United Center in Chicago, was primarily commentated by Nigel McGuinness and Kevin Kelly, and Ross joined the duo for the main event – CM Punk and FTR Victorious against Samoa Joe and Bullet Club Gold. Additionally, it marked the debut of AEW Collision on TNT, an acquisition that was first announced at the Warner Bros. Discovery Upfront event last month.

At the time of the Upfront, AEW programming had reached over 23 million viewers across TBS and TNT through AEW: Dynamite, AEW: Rampage and AEW: All Access. With the addition of AEW Collision, the promotion looks to further augment that number, but will be without Ross for the time being as he heals from his injury.

Ross formerly worked as the primary play-by-play announcer for the promotion, but switched to working as a commentator in a rotation last June. He previously worked with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), World Championship Wrestling and New Japan Pro-Wrestling along with other promotions and is one of the sport’s most recognizable voices.

Charlie Kirk Launching Weekly Video Show on Rumble

0

Salem Media Group radio host Charlie Kirk has debuted a new weekly video program on Rumble.

Thought Crimes with Charlie Kirk and Jack Posobiec will air every Thursday at 8:00 PM ET on the digital video platform, with the first episode premiering last week.

“We also have a whole team of experts talking about things you are not allowed to talk about, like smoke detector chirp culture,” said Kirk while introducing the new venture on The Charlie Kirk Show’s podcast feed. “We talk about…all sorts of stuff. It’s a free-flowing conversation. There’s some rather graphic elements of this conversation. So this is not exactly homeschool friendly. So just giving you fair warning, trigger warning, little R-rated here I do my best to referee it and I failed miserably.

“But I think you’ll enjoy it. Yeah, we talked over ourselves a little bit too much. But if you’re just looking for a fun, thought-provoking boundary-pushing venue, this is for you.”

Kirk has found success on the digital video platform. He has more than 1.2 million subscribers. He streams a video simulcast of his nationally syndicated radio show on his Rumble channel daily.

CBS Considered Frontrunner to Land J.J. Watt

0

After news last month regarding NBC Sports showing interest in J.J. Watt about joining its Big Ten studio program, additional broadcast entities are making efforts to sign the former defensive end to a contract. Watt is weighing offers to contribute to NFL coverage, albeit on a part-time basis, and CBS is currently considered the frontrunner.

If Watt agrees to join CBS Sports, he would be expected to have a role on the pregame show for Super Bowl LVIII and make additional appearances throughout the regular season. Yet he would merely be an addition to the network’s robust football coverage – which includes former stars Tony Romo, Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason among others. NFL Network is also reportedly interested in Watt, according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post.

Watt is widely regarded as one of the top NFL television free agents of the offseason, a class that included Devin McCourty (NBC Sports), Peter Schrager (NFL Network/FOX Sports) and Marcus Spears (ESPN). Mina Kimes reportedly remains unsigned by the network, but ESPN hopes to keep her on its football coverage.

Watt played 12 seasons in the National Football League as a defensive end for the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals. He is the Texans’ record-holder for forced fumbles, recovered fumbles and sacks and was selected to the Pro Bowl five times throughout his career.

Mehdi Hasan: Joe Rogan Interview With RFK Jr. Wasn’t ‘Tethered to Reality’

0

Last week, Joe Rogan welcomed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to his podcast for a wide-ranging discussion. However, MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan wasn’t keen on the topics covered.

During The Mehdi Hasan Show, the MSNBC host mentioned that the Joe Rogan Experience was one again in the news, but it wasn’t centered on Rogan’s many missteps.

“Not for once again spewing racial slurs or spreading antisemitic tropes or platforming some infamous transphobe,” Hasan said. ‘This time it was for a conversation with RFK Jr. That wasn’t exactly, shall we say, tethered to reality.”

Hasan then turned his attention to a back-and-forth on Twitter by Rogan and Dr. Peter Hotez, a global health expert and co-director of vaccine development at Texas Children’s Hospital. Hotez took issue with RFK Jr.’s anti-vaccine stance, which Rogan didn’t push back on. Ultimately, the podcast host offered the doctor a $100,000 donation to the charity of his choice if he were to debate Kennedy Jr. on the podcast. Twitter owner Elon Musk also chimed in, adding that Hotez would fail to engage because “he knows he’s wrong”.

Hasan took umbrage with the interaction.

“Look, I literally wrote a book about the art and importance of debate. And I’m telling you tonight that I am tired of the incessant ‘Debate me, bro’ mantra from conspiracy nuts on social media,” said Hasan. “Because it is never a good idea for an award-winning, world-renowned peer-reviewed, vaccine scientist — or an actual expert in any academic field — to debate an unhinged crank who thinks Bill Gates wants to control us with microchips or that chemicals in the water are turning kids transgender. And yes, RFK Jr. has said both of those things.

“Set aside for a moment that Joe Rogan wouldn’t even be a neutral moderator of such a debate. He’s endorsed anti-Vax nonsense many times before, but you just can’t win a general debate with conspiracists and loons. You can’t debate whether up is down hot is cold, black is white. They never changed their minds, and they win just by you agreeing to share a platform with them. What’s the expression? Never wrestle with a pig you both get dirty, and the pig gets 40,000 new followers on Twitter.”
