San Antonio Sports Media Celebrates Winning NBA Draft Lottery

0

The San Antonio Spurs won the Victor Wembanyama sweepstakes on Tuesday, as results of the NBA Draft Lottery revealed the Spurs will have the number one overall pick in June’s draft.

Wembanyama is a 7-foot tall French big man who is seen as a generational talent. He’s only 19 years old.

The last two times the Spurs had the top pick, they drafted David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Those two helped San Antonio win five NBA titles under head coach Gregg Popovich.

Several in San Antonio sports media personalities and national personalities with ties to the market offered their own reactions and expressed excitement.

Sports Media Celebrates Pat McAfee/ESPN Deal

0

By the time he took the stage at the Disney Upfronts on Tuesday, the industry’s worst-kept secret was that Pat McAfee was taking his show to ESPN. The former punter turned digital media superstar is bringing his show to multiple ESPN platforms including the network, ESPN+ and the ESPN YouTube channel.

“They very much understood that we need to embrace both what tomorrow is and what today is,” McAfee told the crowd at the Upfront event. “I have the exact same vision.”

The move set off a lot of buzz on social media. Many wondered who was going to have to give a little – McAfee or ESPN. As for the sports media, many of McAfee’s colleagues set concern aside and instead celebrated his victory.

Chuck Pagano served as McAfee’s head coach in Indianapolis. He has since become a regular presence on the the show during the NFL season. He took to Twitter to express the pride he felt for Pat McAfee.

“Pat is a proven talent. He and his team have built The Pat McAfee Show into one of the most engaging programs in sports and all of media,” ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro said in a press release announcing the move. “It’s a destination for athlete interviews and breaking news, and the centerpiece of a growing community of sports fans. We’re honored to bring Pat and the show to ESPN through a multifaceted, multiplatform approach.”

Audacy Stock Suspended from NYSE

0

Earlier today, the New York Stock Exchange informed Audacy that its stock was not in compliance with the market’s listing standards, and suspended trading.

Audacy was informed that due to its “abnormally low selling price”, the exchange was suspending its listing and has initiated the process of delisting the stock. When it was suspended, Audacy’s stock price was at $0.09 per share.

In an internal memo obtained by Barrett News Media, Audacy CEO David Field said the company would “appeal the NYSE’s decision”, noting that it previously planned to ask shareholders to approve a reverse stock split at its meeting next week.

“During the appeal period, we will remain an NYSE-listed company but NYSE trading will
be suspended and our common stock will be traded over the counter. We expect the
appeal process to take place over the Summer,” Field said. “We are hopeful we will find our way
back to the exchange later this year as we execute our action plans which include the
reverse stock split, the continued execution of our liability management plans and
working with our financial advisors to refinance our debt. If the appeal is ultimately
unsuccessful, we may move our stock to another exchange or trading platform.

“While this news is disappointing, it has zero impact on Audacy’s ability to serve
listeners and customers or run our operations effectively. To be clear, we are
business as usual,” continued Field. “Our radio stations, digital platforms, podcasts, and all other products and services will continue operating normally. We continue to execute a robust
action plan to emerge healthy from current conditions. It’s important to note that our
liquidity was $124 million as of March 31, 2023, and that we have no debt due until July
2024.”

Audacy had been informed in August of last year that it was facing potential delisting by the New York Stock Exchange for its price failing to exceed $1 per share for more than 30 business days. Audacy’s stock price has not closed about that threshold since July 5th of last year.

At the time, the company claimed it would consider “all available options” to return to compliance. It subsequently refuted reports it was approaching bankruptcy.

“I greatly appreciate everyone’s excellent work and dedication to our team, as we all look
forward to being on the other side of these current economic challenges,” Field concluded.

Mark Simone: Allegations Against Rudy Giuliani ‘Too Salacious and Over the Top’ to Be Believed

0

Yesterday, a former employee of 77 WABC host Rudy Giuliani filed a lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct by the former New York mayor, as well as other various improprieties. 710 WOR host Mark Simone said he doesn’t believe the accuser.

“I’ve known him pretty well for many years. I just don’t believe it,” Simone said on The Mark Simone Show Tuesday. “It’s one thing if there was a woman who came forward and said ‘One night, we were working late and he put his arm around me’, or whatever. That stuff you can believe, but these allegations are over the top.

“‘Every time I walked in, he grabbed my head and pushed it down and forced me to give oral sex and then he was popping Viagara’. Do you believe that? It’s too much for me. It’s just not him. If you read this whole thing, it’s just so salacious and over the top. I just don’t believe it. It’s too crazy. Too over the top.”

Noelle Dunphy alleges that Giuliani raped and sexually abused her during her tenure working for him. She also claims the 77 WABC host owes her more than $2 million in back pay. Additionally, she claims Giuliani required her to work naked and strip during video calls. She also shared that he made racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic remarks throughout her time in his office.

Also included in the allegations is that Giuliani was selling pardons from President Donald Trump for $2 million, with him and the 45th president splitting the money. However, Simone didn’t find that plausible, either.

“If this were the case, he’s not gonna tell a brand new employee that’s been there two weeks. It just doesn’t make sense. It’s not logical,” concluded Simone.

Giuliani was present during his regularly scheduled show on 77 WABC Tuesday afternoon, and defend himself against the allegations.

“I am a punching bag for these folks,” Giuliani said. “The New York Post won’t report what I’m telling you. MSNBC is talking about this. This is her third or fourth accusation of rape against me. What I’m telling you is 100% true. This is a woman who does this for a living. She sues men to get money for a living!”

He added that Dunphy never actually worked for him and said all allegations against him were untrue.

Pat McAfee Is Headed to ESPN

0

Pat McAfee is taking his signature digital show to ESPN, the New York Post reported Tuesday ahead of The Walt Disney Company’s Upfront event. He made an appearance at Tuesday’s Upfront event and explained the thinking behind his move.

“I feel like we are sitting at a beautiful intersection in the history of media that has never happened before,” McAfee said. “Digital has become an influence; it has the structure; it has the ability to reach millions and millions of people literally on a daily basis…. [ESPN] very much understood that we need to embrace both what tomorrow is and what today is. I have the exact same vision.”

Reports over the last several weeks have alluded to the move, and McAfee tweeting out a photo with The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger only added fuel to the fire. He appeared on his show remotely earlier in the day, and will also be bringing the cast of his program with him to ESPN as part of the deal. The show will be live-streamed on ESPN’s YouTube channel, and also be on the ESPN linear television channel, streamed on ESPN+ and available to watch on the ESPN App. It will air following ESPN’s signature morning programming – Get Up! and First Take – and the format will remain unchanged.

McAfee stated on his show last week that his “Up to Something Season” had concluded and to expect an announcement about his future in the next 10 days. He has worked with “The Worldwide Leader” in a variety of different roles, most recently appearing as an analyst on College GameDay. Additionally, he and his show participated in various alternate telecasts of college football games on ESPN2. Outside of ESPN, McAfee made a surprise entrance at WrestleMania 39, and is in the midst of a four-year contract with FanDuel, which he has hinted at leaving.

McAfee had stated that ceding creative control of his program is non-negotiable, as he seems to have been looking for a broadcast partner to assist with production, staffing and other needs. He has now found his match with The Walt Disney Company and ESPN, and despite the move, will still continue keeping the show on YouTube in some form. He and his wife recently welcomed their first child into the world, and took meetings around Los Angeles shortly thereafter.

“This is big,” McAfee said on his show last week. “It is very large. I think some would call it historic…. Just know that we are thankful for everybody and yeah, it’s probably going to be in books someday. I’m very, very fortunate, happy, lucky, thankful [and] grateful.”

The Rules for Journalists Must Change

0

I started working at radio stations in high school. Pouring coffee for news radio anchors in 1972. As a kid, I watched the CBS Evening News every night. I watched as Watergate unfolded and inspired an entire generation of wannabe journalists.

My dream came true, and after my first on-air job at KCBS Radio, I moved to local TV in San Francisco, Chicago, and Los Angeles. A total of 15 years at KPIX, WBBM, and KNBC, before moving to network news, where I was a National Correspondent for Tom Brokaw’s Nightly News on NBC.

8 years later, I moved to ABC News where I worked for 18 years as Senior Law and Justice Correspondent, 20/20 and Primetime magazine correspondent, Senior National Correspondent, and then White House Correspondent.

Nearly 40 years of covering politics in Chicago and then on the national stage without opinion or judgment prepared me to finally bring some analysis and informed criticism to the junction of journalism and media.

Having practiced the “both sides” protocols of journalism in my entire career, I now see that in this world of “alternate facts”, “I do my own research” on the internet, and polarized cable outlets who narrowcast to audiences who want to hear their own views echoed back to them, the rules of journalism must change.

It’s no longer ok to give climate scientists and climate deniers equal space or time. Climate change deniers are wrong, and the preponderance of scientists agree the planet is in danger from human pollutants.

It is no longer ok to allow election deniers equal time or space with the courts, private investigations, and congressional hearings that prove Joe Biden was fairly elected President.

It is no longer OK to allow Donald Trump an open, unfiltered microphone to spew a firehose of lies and disinformation…Too rapid to fact-check on the fly. His rallies should not be broadcast live, either.

Instead, his interviews should be one-on-one, on tape, so his lies can be exposed one by one.  His rallies should be covered, taped, and played on air with context from journalists who can decipher what is news and what is political propaganda or lies.

My belief is that Trump should be covered and his views publicized as warranted, both as a warning to the public of his dangerous policies, rhetoric — including separation of families, reckless treatment of classified documents, and racial tropes. Secondly, because he is a leading figure in the Republican Party who should be, but cannot be ignored.

Lots of good questions are being asked out there by solid journalists. Such as “Where are the whistleblowers you promised?” and “Where is the direct connection between Hunter Biden’s missteps and the President?”

Most of my tenure at the White House involved covering President Barack Obama. “No drama” Obama had a few scandals. Yes, I was there the day he wore the tan suit. Along with others in the White House press corp, I challenged him in press conferences. As in the time I confronted him about not following through when Syria barreled through his “red line” of using chemical weapons. He answered, was annoyed, but did not attack or lie.

During a one-on-one in the Rose Garden, I asked him how he felt about Latino immigration groups who largely voted for him, labeling him “the deporter in chief” because of the large number of deportations underway. Those days of civil back and forth between reporters and politicians seem far away. Obama would get angry with us, but respected the profession and knew it was our job.

Being a political reporter in today’s world is more than stenography, it’s challenging power, refuting disinformation, and fact-checking.

Truth is a real thing, and today’s journalists should not shy away from finding and publishing it.

NBC News Hesitant to Host Donald Trump After Reaction to CNN Event

0

As networks continue to grapple with how to cover the candidacy of former President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican primary, NBC News has reportedly gotten gunshy about hosting an event after CNN received significant backlash for hosting Trump in a New Hampshire town hall.

According to a report from CNBC’s Alex Sherman, NBC News had begun the process of reaching out to prominent presidential candidates to discuss their availability for upcoming appearances. However, NBC now is not likely host a town hall event with Trump after the reaction to his performance in CNN’s event last week. That is not to say that NBC News won’t cover Trump or look to feature him in its coverage of the run-up to the Republican primary, only that a town hall-style event is unlikely to happen.

Reaction was mixed to the New Hampshire event, mostly along party lines. Prominent Democrats and liberal news media figures were critical of CNN for giving the former President a platform, while Republicans and conservative news media personnel applauded Trump for going into what was referred to as “enemy territory” for the combative interview with moderator Kaitlan Collins.

Sherman’s report goes on to detail that after defending CNN last week for its decision to host the event, CEO Chris Licht is now of the belief that the network could have handled the on-air product differently in the face of much criticism. Licht reportedly zeroed in on things as detailed as camera selections and placements in the re-examination of the event.

Damon Amendolara: Owners Can’t Honestly Say Peacock Playoff Game is Good for NFL

0

The NFL’s decision to put a playoff game exclusively on Peacock this coming season is being met poorly by the media. Tuesday morning, Damon Amendolara added his voice to the chorus calling the decision a money grab by NFL owners.

NBC reportedly paid $110 million for a postseason game to be exclusive to their streaming service. Divided amongst 32 teams, that will work out to just under $3.5 million for each owner. Amendolara was shocked by how little money it took for the owners to disregard the fan experience.

“Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones and John Mara and the Rooneys, Steve Bisciotti, all these guys, they decided, is this good for the audience? And everybody said no,” the CBS Sports Radio morning man said. “They said, ‘But you get an extra 4 million bucks if you say yes’. They all said yes.”

He said that the NFL was screwing its fans with the decision. This is another app to download. It is potentially another streaming bill to pay. None of it is worth it or necessary in Amendolara’s eyes.

“None of them truthfully would say this is better for the audience, better for the consumers,” he said. “Just keep it at NBC. Nobody would say this is better. Not one voice in that room would say this is better.”

Roger Goodell has prioritized generating more media revenue for the league since becoming the commissioner, and he has been very successful in that endeavor. Damon Amendolara said that not all revenue is necessary or even good for the game.

NFL owners, however, feel differently. Even if $3.5 million is a fraction of what they pay their quarterbacks, revenue is revenue and you do not turn that down.

“That’s what sucks,” Amendolara said. “That’s what’s hard. None of them could honestly say it’s better. But they turned, they held their hand out, they got three and a half million bucks per person, and they said, ‘Well, I could live with that.’”

Study: NASCAR Radio Audience Loyal to Stations, Brands The Support Sport

0

A new study commissioned by MRN shows some good news for their affiliates. Like people that follow other sports on the radio, the NASCAR audience is more passionate and locked in than others that follow the sport. That manifests itself in some very beneficial ways.

The study was conducted by by FMR Associates using their Local Radio Analysis product.

“NASCAR fans are passionate about their sport and loyal to those that support it,” Chris Schwartz, President of MRN said in a press release. “And the insights we uncovered in the FMR study prove that affiliation with Motor Racing Network programming works for stations in every market, regardless of format.”

More good news comes in the form of who the audience is. FMR found that people that follow NASCAR on the radio are not only locked into sports or talk radio. Country, sports and rock radio all had audiences that showed a significant interest in NASCAR, but so did traditionally female-targeted formats like CHR and Hot AC.

“The spending power and acceptance of the commercialization of NASCAR by its fans, frankly, surprised me,” FMR Associates President, Kent Phillips, added. “It erased any preconceptions I may have had about that audience.”
