Former WMAL Reporter Claims Journalism Has Been ‘Hijacked’ By Activists

0

In an interview on The Joe Pags Show Wednesday, a former WMAL host dismissed for posting derogatory remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris claimed that newsrooms are now being dominated by activists, causing internal conflicts.

Amber Athey, who previously worked at 105.9 FM WMAL, was terminated after she tweeted the UPS delivery slogan last year and commented on the outfit worn by VP Harris during the State of the Union address. “Kamala looks like a UPS employee — what can brown do for you?”

Athey told Pags there’s been a dramatic shift in media, with activist-driven journalism dominating the landscape.

“What happened is the snowflakes who were instituting mob politics on college campuses graduated and ended up being hired at major American institutions, including the media,” said Athey. “The media people that watched what happened on campus from 2012 to 2018 didn’t take it seriously.”

According to Athey, conservatives on college campuses have warned for years about being silenced by the majority, who have silenced their freedom of speech.

“The media said no, it’s no big deal; either (students) will grow out of it, or we like that they are standing up for what they believe in,” she said. “It turns out it didn’t work well and ended up on their doorstep. The so-called adults in the room didn’t know how to respond when they were on the receiving end of this.”

Athey concluded that the reason for internal uprisings at institutions such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, Politico, and The Hill is the failure of top-level management to suppress the revolt that originated on college campuses years ago.

“They (reporters) are more progressive and radical than ever before, and these [companies] have had their platforms highjacked for activism as opposed to journalism.”

Pags said the practice of journalism ought to involve simple acts of observation and reporting. As a longtime television journalist, Pags amassed many accolades throughout his reporting career.

“They seem to know how to do (journalism), or they don’t know how to do it, and they don’t care,” he said. “Or they think that their political leanings matter more. I agree that some of the woke millennials are doing it now, but I place some of the blame on the liberal professors.”

Athey is coming out with a new book titled: The Snowflakes’ Revolt: How Woke Millennials Hijacked American Media.

Adnan Virk, Harold Reynolds Relaunching Early Evening Edition of MLB Tonight

0

When the new MLB season begins next Thursday, MLB Network will be rolling out a new-look edition of MLB Tonight. MLB Network announced on Thursday that Harold Reynolds and Adnan Virk will be the duo hosting the 6 PM ET edition of the show starting on March 30.

Reynolds and Virk will host two special editions of the show at noon and 4 PM ET on Opening Day before shifting to their normal 6 PM ET time slot on March 31.

Reynolds was hosting the late edition of MLB Tonight that was more focused on providing live look-ins. The late night edition won’t change focus but the belief is that Reynolds and Virk will bring a fresh and consistent approach to the program.

“I’m thrilled about the chance to work with the talented Adnan Virk as this is going to be one of the most creative pregame shows ever,” Reynolds said. “We’re going to use all our bells and whistles. I’ll be at the park for interviews with players and coaches, we’ll do demos on our field in Studio 42, and bring analysis that you won’t find anywhere else. This show is going to touch on everything going on in our sport.”

For Virk, he finds a more concrete role at MLB Network after spending the last four years hosting a variety of different programming.

“I’m thrilled to have been at MLB Network for the last four years and now to have found a home on the 6,” Virk said. “If you’re a baseball fan, there’s no better place to get prepared for the night’s action and be up to date on all that’s happening in our great sport. To be alongside my friend and Emmy Award winner Harold Reynolds, makes this latest journey all the more sweeter.”

The BSM Summit is Over, What Do You Do Now?

0

Now that the BSM Summit 2023 is over, it’s time to do something about it. Whether you attended or followed along online, it’s time to go over a few ideas on how to cash in your newfound wealth of insights and ideas on how to grow the Sports Radio business.

Business author Dr. James Belasco said that knowledge is nothing without action. Nothing changes until you do something. What you do will directly determine what you learn. So, here are some tips on how to put into action what you learned from the BSM Summit 2023.

GO BACK TO GO FORWARD!

What were the key themes and ideas that stood out to you? What did you write down or talk about with others? What kind of takeaways did that create for you? How can you apply these insights to your job or those who work with you?

For example, Jason Barrett made a point in his introductory comments to remind us that we are not in the sports media radio or tv business but in the CONTENT business. How can you incorporate more social media into the sales culture of your organization? If it is being produced, it can be sold!

PLEASE PUT IT IN WRITING.

You know what resonated with you. Now put down just 1 or 2 specific actions you can take motivated by what you learned at the Summit. Remember, a goal is a dream without a deadline.

Do this Monday. Prepare this weekend while everything is fresh on your mind.

This might involve setting goals around audience growth, content development, or engagement. For example, suppose you learned about the importance of phones, podcasting, and streaming from Larry Rosin at Edison Research. In that case, you might aim to create a more robust local sports original podcast network. Put a demo together and get it sold in 30 days or less. Think beyond just your on-air talent. Local fans, players, coaches, and management have talent too.

SHARE WHAT YOU LEARNED

Think beyond the sales meeting. Why not put a white paper together for LinkedIn or, better yet, a video? Please share it. Many people can benefit from the insights and ideas you just got from the greatest minds in sports radio. Offer a NOBODY LISTENS TO THE RADIO 30-minute speech to your local Ad Fed or Rotary Club. You rubbed shoulders with Jim Rome, Colin Cowherd, and Erik Shanks of Fox Sports. You have first-hand information that needs to be shared.

HIT THEM UP

Stay connected with those you met and interacted with at the Summit. Deliver that contact you said you would or piece of information. Follow them on social media or send them an email. Expand your contacts and continue the conversation by thanking them for what you learned or can help them with in the future. Be genuine and not out to get a job.

GO FOR MORE

Knowledge is power! Look for books, articles, or online courses that can help you deepen your understanding of something you learned at the BSM Summit. For example, if you got lost when the digital media stuff came up, commit to an IAB training or certification to get you up to speed asap

Don’t overestimate the value of the knowledge you have now because you are underestimating the value of what you will gain by giving that up. Make meaningful changes in your work or perspective and watch your sports radio world improve.

Amid CNN Rumors, Gayle King Says ‘I Have No Intention of Leaving CBS’

0

Rumors have continued to circulate that CNN is interested in bringing CBS Mornings anchor Gayle King to the network for a primetime interview program.

The reports have linked King with TNT NBA analyst Charles Barkley, who admitted he had had discussions with the network about a potential program, and was only considering it due to King’s involvement.

However, at AdWeek’s Convergent TV Summit Wednesday, King said stopped short of conriming the reports, and also denied she had any interesting in departing her longtime television home.

“I’m very close to Chris Licht. I like him very much, but on that question, ‘me no speak English,’” King joked. “Let’s just say I have two years left on my contract with CBS, and I have no intention of leaving CBS.”

King has hosted CBS Mornings — which rebranded from CBS This Morning in 2021 — since 2011, and said added she has no interest in stepping away anytime soon.

“I like the fact that I sit here at 68 years old, Walter Cronkite had to retire at 65. Just think about that for a second,” said King. “I marvel at that. He had to retire at 65 and didn’t want to. I’m not even thinking about retiring, and I love that I work with 20 somethings, 30 somethings, 40 somethings, and don’t feel like the old lady in the room. I don’t feel that way.”

CNN primetime host Anderson Cooper is adding a Sunday evening program to his duties with the network.

The Whole Story — which will debut on Sunday, April 16th — will focus on a singluar topic each episode. The debut episode will center upon the current state of San Francisco, with CNN anchor Sara Sidner contributing reports on the “political and social issues plaguing the city”.

Other topics for future shows include women beliving that baby powder sold by Johnson & Johnson caused their cancer, migrants seeking refuge at the Southern border, the coronation of King Charles II, and pyschadelic mushrooms, among others.

In a statement, CNN CEO Chris Licht said the show “goes behind the headlines, touching every continent and corner of the planet, as we bring our viewers into the heart of the essential stories of our time.”

CNN producer Susan Chun — who is currently the Executive Producer of Anderson Cooper 360 — will serve in the same capacity for the new program.

In addition to his current primetime program, Cooper also works as a correspondent for 60 Minutes, which also airs on Sunday evenings.

NCAA Exploring Separate TV Deal For Women’s March Madness

0

The Women’s NCAA Tournament loses money under its current broadcast deal, but that is because it is undervalued according to a Sportico study. The tournament is currently included in a television package featuring all NCAA championship events, excluding men’s basketball, that the organization sold to ESPN.

There has been a string of good news for women’s college basketball in recent years. This year’s tournament alone has seen viewership highs and sold-out ad time. The national championship game is set to air on ABC, marking the first time since 1995 the event has been on network television.

All of that momentum has the NCAA rethinking its television structure for the Women’s Basketball Tournament.

“Somebody’s watching women’s basketball,” legendary South Carolina coach Dawn Staley told the AP. “Somebody feels like we’re in high demand, and obviously the decision-makers that put us on now realize that they’ve got to keep putting us on.”

Endeavor has been hired by the NCAA to explore selling the tournament as its own television product instead of including it in that package ESPN currently holds for other NCAA championship events. The organization is expected to make a decision on how to proceed in the fall.

Not only are ratings rising. Attendance revenue for the Women’s NCAA Tournament is growing too as women’s sports see their popularity surge in the US.

“It’s an exciting time. Year over year, we continue to demonstrate the value that women’s basketball brings to that space,” Lynn Holzman, the NCAA vice president of women’s basketball, said. “It’ll be exciting to see what the results are of this for the sport itself, but also for the NCAA more broadly in our championships.”

Justin Shackil Joins WFAN For Yankees Broadcasts

0

The New York Yankees are welcoming a new voice to their broadcast team. WFAN announced the hiring of Justin Shackil on Thursday.

Shackil will primarily serve as the host of postgame shows. He will also be in the booth alongside Suzyn Waldman on occasion. A press release states that he will fill in for John Sterling as the play-by-play voice of the team for around 30 games in 2023.

“Justin is no stranger to the Bronx and his passion for the pinstripes makes him the ideal person to join the iconic duo of John and Suzyn in the booth,” said Market President of Audacy New York Chris Oliviero. “His contributions to the broadcast last season were terrific and well received, so we’re excited to see him return in this enhanced role.”

The New York Yankees are going to keep Justin Shackil busy. He will also serve as a reporter on the team’s YES Network broadcasts for 40 games this season. His other duties with the Yankees include scoreboard host, digital host and reporter.

“As someone who made listening, watching and attending Yankee games a major part of their youth, receiving the opportunity to join John and Suzyn in the WFAN radio booth is certainly the ‘pinch-me’ moment of my baseball broadcasting career,” said Shackil. “I’m grateful to Audacy for this chance, and to the Yankees for trusting me and expanding my role with an organization I value so highly.”

Justin Shackil will stay busy. The new role at WFAN is an addition to an already busy workload that includes covering the Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty and college basketball for YES and covering boxing for DAZN. He will also continue to co-host the Toeing the Slab podcast with David Cone for Jomboy Media.
