Longtime Seattle News Anchor Gregg Hersholt Retires

0

Friday, January 13th marks the final day of the radio career of Gregg Hersholt. The longtime Seattle news anchor is leaving his position at Northwest Newsradio.

“Thank you to those who have listened along the way and the many great people I have worked for. I feel truly blessed,” Hersholt said.

Hersholt has anchored the station’s morning show with Manda Factor, and he received high marks from Program Director Rick Van Cise.

“Gregg gave every story he covered the importance it deserved,” Van Cise said.

Hersholt has been a fixture in Seattle news radio, anchoring on KIRO for several years in addition to his work as News Director at KVI and KJR. In total, the Gonzaga graduate spent more than 30 years on Seattle airwaves.

With his departure, the station has announced reporter Brian Calvert will step into the shoes vacated by Hersholt.

“Brian’s engaging personality, news credibility and unique storytelling make him a great fit,” Van Cise added, noting Calvert will have “big shoes to fill” after the departure of Hersholt.

The retirement of Hersholt is the latest move in the anchor chair at the venerable Seattle news radio station. In September, the station named Kim Shepard as afternoon anchor.

Taylor Twellman: Move From ESPN to Apple ‘Has Rejuvenated My Life’

0

Last week, longtime ESPN soccer analyst Taylor Twellman announced he was departing the network. He has since been announced as one of the analysts for the MLS Season Pass package on Apple that will debut next month, and he says the change in scenery has done wonders for him.

“This has rejuvenated my life, my personality,” Twellman told Soccer America. “It’s given me given me something to be a part of. There’s nothing better. If I blindfolded you in 17, 18 stadiums in MLS and then took the blindfold off, you’d have absolutely no idea you were in Major League Soccer. You’d feel like you were in Germany, Spain, like some real environments in South America that are hard to replicate. And that’s hard to give up, which is why I’m sitting here.”

Twellman’s excitement for MLS Season Pass — which will launch on February 1st — was understandable for a lifelong soccer fanatic. After a storied MLS career, Twellman joined ESPN as its lead World Cup analyst before the rights to the event went to FOX Sports. He contributed to shows like Get Up and SportsCenter, but will now have the opportunity to work as an analyst on more soccer specific programs with Apple.

“Now there’s shoulder programming,” said Twellman. “So if you’re an MLS fan, guess what? Monday through Friday you want to have a conversation. You want to hear your team critiqued and criticized and analyzed. It sounds so simple, but if you really think about the 27 years, it hasn’t been there.”

BetQL Network Plans NFL Playoff Coverage

0

With the NFL Playoffs approaching, BetQL Network has announced its plans to cover the NFL’s run up to the Super Bowl.

You Better You Bet hosts Nick Kostos and Ken Barkley will host BetQL’s Countdown to Kickoff before each day of NFL playoff action commences.

“So much betting content is focused on giving bettors picks the day of the game, with many important factors towards making a valuable bet not taken into account,” said You Better You Bet host Nick Kostos.

“But what we do differently is we start handicapping games on Mondays for the weekend to come, aiming to capture the best number and tracking line movement throughout the week. Ken and I look forward keeping our audience informed for the most critical point of the NFL season, while offering our unique Wagertainment angle to keep them entertained along the way.”

BetQL’s Countdown to Kickoff will be heard on the BetQL Network, along with the Audacy and BetQL apps, as well as Audacy sports stations like 670 The Score, WFAN, 94WIP, and more.

BetQL Network will also broadcast live from the newly opened BetMGM Sportsbook next to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, where Super Bowl LVII will be held. You Better You Bet, BetQL Daily, The Daily Tip, and BetMGM Tonight will all air from the sportsbook at some point during the NFL Playoffs.

MSNBC Altering Daily Lineup, Hallie Jackson Expands Role With NBC News NOW

0

MSNBC is altering its daily lineup after expanding anchor Hallie Jackson’s presence on the network’s streaming platform NBC News NOW.

Chris Jansing Reports will now expand to a two-hour show, airing from 1:00-3:00 PM ET. Katy Tur Reports shifts to a 3:00 PM ET airtime. Jose Diaz-Balart will host a one-hour show at 11:00 AM ET. Meanwhile, a “rotating lineup of hosts” will host the 10:00 AM timeslot until a permanent anchor is named, with Andrea Mitchell Reports remaining at Noon ET.

In a memo to MSNBC staff, MSNBC President Rashida Jones said the moves — which will take effect on Monday, February 13th — will “strengthen our lineup and better position the network for future success”.

The shakeup ends Jackson’s MSNBC show. The network launched Hallie Jackson Reports in September of 2021 after seeing the anchor host MSNBC Live at 10:00 AM ET since 2016.

Jackson had been working double-duty with MSNBC and NBC News NOW after launching Hallie Jackson NOW on the streamer in November of 2021.

“Over the last year, Hallie has developed a loyal audience with her fast-paced newscast that kicks off our live primetime block,” Executive Vice President of NBC News NOW Janelle Rodriguez told staffers in a memo obtained by Deadline. “This new development is a natural extension for Hallie as she expands her role more broadly at NBC News.”

The changes to the MSNBC lineup are not related to the current downsizing experienced by the network. A report from CNN’s Oliver Darcy claims the network is removing 75 jobs in its news division, affecting both MSNBC and NBC News.

WSJS Towers Destroyed By Alleged Vandals

0

News/Talk/Sports station WSJS in Winston-Salem has seen two of its radio towers “destroyed by vandals” according to Truth Broadcasting owner Stu Epperson Jr.

“Today has been one of the toughest days of my broadcasting life… someone has destroyed several of our towers,” a Facebook post from Epperson read. “Criminal investigation is underway. FBI is involved since it’s a federal crime.”

The main signal of 600 AM and 101.5 FM — signals licensed to Winston-Salem — are down, while the station still broadcasts on 103.1 — licensed to Winston-Salem — and 104.9, which is licensed to High Point, North Carolina. The station also broadcasts on 93.7 from Greensboro, but the status of that signal is not immediately known.

In a tweet, afternoon host Josh Graham said “it might take one week, it might take two weeks” to get the two signals back on the air.

Truth Broadcasting purchased WSJS in December of 2021 before altering the station’s format to a mix of news and sports talk in the summer of 2022.

WEEI Hires Adam Jones For Afternoons, Promotes Ken Laird to Brand Manager

0

Congratulations are in order at Audacy Boston. Greg Hill announced some big moves for WEEI Friday on the station’s morning show. The first is a promotion for Ken Laird. He is the station’s new brand manager. The other is the addition of Adam Jones, who will join Meghan Ottolini and Christian Arcand in afternoon drive.

“Nobody deserves that more than you,” Hill said to Laird. “Let me tell you that. It’s been a delight seeing you go from this program all the way to the tippety top here at WEEI.”

Laird began his radio career at WEEI in 2002. He returned to the station in 2015 to serve as the producer of the morning show. In 2022, he was upped to operations manager.

“Working at WEEI, an iconic and influential brand, has been an honor dating back to my start here in 2002,” Laird said in a press release. “To take on a Brand Manager role some twenty years later is both incredibly humbling and exciting. I can’t thank Mark Hannon and Mike Thomas enough for the guidance and opportunity they’ve given me. The sports radio ratings share in Boston is proof that the nation’s most passionate fans live here, and I’m ready for the challenge to work with this great staff to deliver the daily entertainment those fans crave.”

Jones comes to the station from crosstown rival 98.5 The Sports Hub. He has hosted the station’s night show since 2013 and has been heard on Boston sports radio since 2006.

“Joining the team at WEEI is a lifelong dream come true,” said Jones. “For 10 years, I have approached nights like afternoon drive. I can’t wait to get started with Meghan and Christian.”

“This is the 3rd run for Adam and I working together. He’s talented, opinionated, informed and funny. Miss a day and miss a lot. Afternoons on WEEI will be can’t miss entertainment,” added Mike Thomas, Senior Vice President and Market Manager, Audacy Boston. “Ken has stepped up and really proven himself as a leader this past year, and I’m very happy to elevate him in this new role. I know the best is yet to come.”

The station’s new afternoon show will be called Jones & Mego and will be heard weekdays from 2p-6p ET.

“I love that combo,” Laird said of the new afternoon show. “That is the new, young entertainment destination for sports fans, entertainment seekers in Boston.”

California College Students Earn Chance to Win 10 Free Tickets to the 2023 BSM Summit Thanks to Steve Kamer Voiceovers

0

With a new year comes renewed energy and optimism for the sports media business. Yours truly is looking forward to showcasing the best our business has to offer when we gather the industry in Los Angeles, CA at the 2023 BSM Summit at the Founders Club at the University of Southern California on March 21-22, 2023. Our conference is returning to the west coast for the first time since 2019. We’ve announced some super talented speakers. We’ve got additional things in the works and I plan to make additional announcements in the next few weeks.

People often ask me what the biggest challenge is putting this event together. My answer is always the same, it’s getting people to leave the comfort of their office and spend two days in a room together learning and discussing ways to grow the business. We have great sponsorship support and exceptional people on stage and are fortunate to have a lot of folks already set to attend. Our venue this year has extra space though, so I’m hoping a few more of you make time to join us. If you haven’t bought a ticket or reserved your hotel room, visit BSMSummit.com to make sure you’re all set.

If there’s one thing our industry could get better at it’s opening our minds to new ideas and information. There’s more than one path to success. Just because you’re in good shape today doesn’t mean you will be tomorrow. Building brands, growing audiences, increasing revenue, and examining new opportunities is an ongoing process. There are many shifts along the way. We may not solve every business challenge during our two-days together but you’ll leave the room more connected and informed than when you entered it.

Each year I’ll get two or three emails from folks sharing that they learned more about the industry in two-days at the Summit than they have in ___ years inside of their building. That’s truly gratifying and what I strive to achieve when I put this event together. I remember when conferences like this didn’t exist for format folks and I take the risk and invest the time and resources to create it because I love the sports media industry and believe I can help it thrive. I see great value in gathering professionals to share ideas, information, and meet others who can help them grow their business, and if we do our part, I’m confident some will want to work with us too. That’s how we benefit over the long haul.

But as much as I focus on serving the professional crowd, I also think we have a responsibility to educate young people who are interested, passionate, and taking steps to be a part of our business in the future. The BSM website is visited by hundreds of thousands of people each month and it’s become a valuable resource for folks who enjoy sports radio and television. I think it’s vital to use our platform, influence and two-day event to connect generations and I’m happy to announce that we will once again welcome college students at this year’s Summit.

Most of us who’ve been in this line of work for two or three decades learned the business without podcasts, YouTube, social media, the web or conferences delivering two full days of sessions that taught you more about the business than what’s available inside of a class room. We learned by doing, and hoping we were right. Then we copied others who had success. Some of that still exists, and that’s not a bad thing. But where our business goes in the future is going to be drastically different.

I’d like to see the difference makers in our format remembered for years to come, and practices that have stood the test of time remain valued down the line. Change is inevitable in every business and I’m excited about the road that lies ahead especially some of the technological advancements that are now available or will soon become a bigger part of our industry. I think we can embrace the future while enjoying the present and celebrating the past. The best way to do that is by bringing together everyone who is and is hoping to be a part of the sports media universe.

So here’s two things we’re doing to make sure future broadcasters have an opportunity to learn with us.

First, I want to send a HUGE thank you to Steve Kamer Voiceovers. Thanks to Steve’s generosity, TEN (10) college students will be given FREE tickets to attend the 2023 BSM Summit in March. Steve is a USC graduate (Class of 1985) and he bought the ten tickets to help young people learn about the industry, save money and make valuable connections. When I first received his order, I thought he hit the wrong button. I reached out to tell him a mistake was made and I needed to refund him. That’s when he told me what he wanted to do for students who were pursuing their broadcasting dreams just as we both did years ago. A very classy gesture on his part.

As it pertains to the contest, here’s how it’s going to work.

To win tickets to attend the Summit, students must submit a 2-minute video by email to JBarrett@sportsradiopd.com explaining why they’d like to be in attendance and what they hope to learn at the event. Included in your email should be a list of steps that you’ve taken or are pursuing to explore opportunities in the media industry. If you want to pass along a resume and audio or video clips too to showcase your work and experience, that’s fine as well. BSM will accept submissions until February 17th. The winners will be announced on Friday February 24th.

Helping me select the winners will be an exceptional panel of media executives. Each of these folks below will choose one person to attend our L.A. event. The final two will be picked by Steve Kamer and myself.

  • Scott Shapiro – Senior Vice President, FOX Sports Radio
  • Justin Craig – Senior Program Director, ESPN Radio
  • Jeff Sottolano – Executive Vice President, Programming, Audacy
  • Bruce Gilbert – Senior Vice President of Sports, Cumulus Media & Westwood One
  • Amanda Gifford – Vice President, Content Strategy & Audio, ESPN
  • Jacob Ullman – Senior Vice President, Production and Talent Development, FOX Sports
  • Greg Strassell – Senior Vice President, Programming, Hubbard Radio
  • Scott Sutherland – Executive Vice President, Bonneville International

To qualify for the BSM Summit College Contest, students must be enrolled in college in the state of California, pursuing a degree that involves course work either in radio, television, print or the digital business. Those attending local trade schools with a focus on broadcasting are also welcome to participate. You must be able to take care of your own transportation and/or lodging.

This is a contest I enjoy running. We’ve had great participation during our prior two shows in New York City but haven’t done it before on the west coast. I’m hoping it’s helpful to California students and look forward to hearing from many of them during the next month.

For students who live out of state and wish to attend or those enrolled at local universities who enter the contest but aren’t lucky enough to win one of the ten free tickets from Steve Kamer Voiceovers, we are introducing a special two-day college ticket for just $124.99. You must provide proof that you’re currently in school to take advantage of the offer. This ticket gives you access to all of our sessions inside the Founders Club. College tickets will be limited to forty (40) seats so take advantage of the opportunity before it expires.

The 2023 BSM Summit will feature award ceremonies with Emmis Communication CEO Jeff Smulyan and legendary WFAN program director Mark Chernoff, sessions with influential on-air talent such as Colin Cowherd, Jim Rome, Joy Taylor, and Mina Kimes, big picture business conversations with executives from groups such as Audacy, iHeart, Bonneville, Good Karma Brands, Barstool, The Volume, Omaha Productions and more. For details on tickets and hotel rooms visit BSMsummit.com.

I look forward to seeing you in March in Los Angeles!

Blaze Media Announces New Arrivals, Exit of Steven Crowder

0

Blaze Media announced Thursday the addition of three new shows debuting in 2023. The network also announced the departure of Steven Crowder.

The “Louder with Crowder” host joined Blaze TV when the network merged with CRTV in 2018. CRTV was an online subscription network that Conservative Review owned. According to Axios, as of 2020, Blaze TV had approximately 450,000 paid subscribers.

In an email blast, the network announced the addition of Alex Stein, Auron MacIntyre, and Lauren Chen. Blaze Media also said Crowder’s content would no longer be found on the website, but that past shows could be found in the archives.

“Alex Stein is coming soon to BlazeTV and will take you on an unscripted roller coaster ride that mocks political correctness and takes on the liberal world order with courage and humor,” the email read. “Prime Time with Alex Stein” will leave you in stitches.

Stein, aka Prime Time 99, became a viral sensation antagonizing Antifa, ridiculing school boards, and questioning city councils about gender reassignment surgery.

MacIntyre is described as an original commentator with a thought-provoking perspective.

“You won’t find anywhere else,” Blaze said. “So, if you’re tired of the same old talking points and want to enjoy a show that’s clinically proven to raise your IQ, you’re going to love Auron MacIntyre.”

“Longtime fans of BlazeTV will be thrilled to learn that Lauren Chen is returning to the platform later this year,” the network said.

“Lauren Chen is known for her sharp analysis of politics and culture — and with both politics and culture going off the rails in recent years, her insights and commentary are needed now more than ever. We are thrilled to welcome Lauren back to BlazeTV, and we can’t wait to start sharing her wit and wisdom with you.”

News/Talk Personalities Remember Rush Limbaugh On His Birthday

0

The late Rush Limbaugh would have turned 72 Thursday. Limbaugh died after a short battle with lung cancer on Feb. 17, 2021. “The Rush Limbaugh Show” host was arguably the most influential talk radio personality ever. At its peak, the show was broadcasted on nearly 700 affiliates nationwide.

In the months following the radio host’s passing, hundreds of radio stations scrambled to fill the 12 pm to 3 pm afternoon slot held down by Limbaugh. Some broadcast companies promoted local talent while Premiere Networks elevated Clay Travis and Buck Sexton to serve as Limbaugh’s official successors; meanwhile, Cumulus Media hired Dan Bongino.

On Thursday, news/talk personalities paid homage to Limbaugh. Houston-based radio host Michael Berry played Limbaugh’s 2020 Christmas message during his show on NewsRadio 740 KTRH.

“It was 72 years ago today; the greatest of all time was born. The man who is the reason for talk radio today,” Berry said.

WBT Radio host Brett Winterble worked with Rush from 1995 until 2006. He was one of the Snerdleys, a pseudonym Limbaugh assigned to various call screeners over the years.

“During that same time, I got married. I had a couple of kids and my life totally changed,” Winterble said in a tweet to Barrett News Media. “My daughter was born in 2002 and Rush was kind enough to send his well wishes to her on that day. My son just so happened to be born on the same day that Rush Limbaugh celebrated his birthday and so forever and ever we will be linked to both Rush and our beloved son. Happy birthday Rush Limbaugh, radio’s all-time greatest.”

Travis and Sexton discussed Limbaugh’s legacy with Sexton saying that Limbaugh received some much-deserved recognition on his birthday.

“We are always thinking about Rush when we talk about these issues because we are sitting here in the house that Rush built,” said Sexton. “Many of the greats in talk radio today are thinking about Rush on his birthday.”

“Rush was legendary, and he obviously saw around the corner very often in the direction that we were all headed,” added Travis.
