0

Listeners to 98.5 The Sports Hub will have less Tony Massarotti than they are used to. The afternoon co-host revealed that he had a health scare during the holidays. As a result, he will have to miss some upcoming editions of Felger & Mazz.

“They required my immediate attention, we addressed them, and I feel good about it. But I’m also going to have to [pace myself] getting back to work here on the advice of people who have been taking care of me,” he said on air Monday.

Before he took time off for the holidays, Massarotti threw up while doing an episode of the show. He had to run tot he bathroom in the middle of a segment. He has been out since mid-December. He says that some listeners have reached out to make sure he is okay.

Tony Massarotti says his schedule will “be staggered” in the coming weeks.

He also revealed that he will not be back with NESN for the upcoming baseball season. During 2022, Massarotti served as an analyst for more than 30 Red Sox games on the network last season.

Merrill Reese: I’ll Never Retire From Eagles Radio Booth

0

Longtime Philadelphia sports radio stalwart Angelo Cataldi is coming up on the end of his illustrious career at 94WIP, but don’t expect Eagles radio play-by-play announcer Merrill Reese to join him anytime soon.

The 80-year-old Reese joined Cataldi Tuesday to discuss the Eagles as the NFL playoffs begin. Cataldi discussed a recent Q&A Reese did with Philadelphia Magazine, before eventually asking the longtime voice of the franchise if he ever considered stepping aside.

“People like me are quitters,” Cataldi joked. “Merrill, are you ever retiring?”

“Never, never, never,” Reese responded. “I keep saying they have to remove me with a crane. I love doing this so much, Angelo. I truly, truly do. I prepare as hard as I maybe ever have, and I feel great. When I arrive at that stadium, I’m a nervous wreck until we go on the air because it’s so important to me. I love it. There’s nothing more important in the world to me.”

Reese has served as the radio voice of the Eagles since 1977.

Pat McAfee: It Was a Perfect Final Night For People That Didn’t Like Me on College Football

0

The college football season is over The addition of Pat McAfee to College GameDay stands out as the sport’s biggest off-the-field story from 2022. He said that he heard plenty this year from people that did not like the move, and he thinks his performance in the National Championship Game made them all very happy.

McAfee was the subject of complaints on social media after he used sexual innuendo to express his gratitude for the past year.

“Everything we say into a microphone has zero ill intentions,” he said on his show on Tuesday.

Pat McAfee explained that he saw an online article saying he was “blasted” for his performance and word choice at the national championship game. He admits that Georgia’s total domination of TCU made the game boring and he may have gone a little overboard to entertain himself.

“I’m not normally a sexual innuendo joke guy. That’s not normally my thing,” he said. “Eleven hours on TV one day, 65-7, I maybe got a little loose. I said ‘college football, thank you for allowing me to penetrate you and be inside you all year,’ which, factual statement, but certainly sounded a little bit like deep-dongin’ somebody.”

McAfee says his performance in the final game of the season was kind of perfect. It gave everyone a bit of what they wanted from him.

“I think that was a great way to wrap up the college football season, you know? The people inside the college football world that did not appreciate my presence, that was one last trip around on the tractor to really bury me and keep it going.”

Political Advertising Could Reach $10 Billion in 2024

0

According to analysis from advertising data firm AdImpact, political advertising in 2024 could reach $10 billion.

Several factors could play into the rise of the political advertising amount, which hit $8.9 billion in 2022. Every seat in the House of Representatives is up for grabs in 2024, while the narrow majority for Republicans in the Senate could compel the political party to spend more money.

Also, 2024 will see a Presidential race that always bolsters political spending. Former President Donald Trump has already announced his candidacy, and has also hinted at running as a third-party candidate should he not secure the Republican nomination. President Joe Biden has not announced whether he’ll seek re-election. Should he decline, AdImpact claims it would “open the floodgates” for spending from Democratic Party hopefuls.

$9.04 billion was spent on political advertising during the previous Presidential election, with an estimated $275 million spent on radio advertising.

White House Asked Facebook To Censor Tucker Carlson Anti-Vax Video

0

A video from Fox News host Tucker Carlson was one of many videos the White House reportedly asked Facebook to censor in 2021.

Documents in a lawsuit from the Attorneys General of Louisiana and Missouri show Biden administration officials asked the social media platform to limit the reach of several anti-vaccine videos, including Carlson’s.

Facebook told White House Director of Digital Media Rob Flaherty that it would limit the Carlson video in question by 50-percent, and would give itself seven days to fact-check the video.

“Regardless of popularity, the Tucker Carlson video does not qualify for removal under our policies. Following the government’s decision yesterday, we are allowing claims that the Johnson and Johnson vaccine causes blood clots, but we still do not allow categorical claims that it or other vaccines are unsafe or ineffective,” the social media giant emailed another White House official.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry believes this proves “collusion between big tech and big government”.

“Today’s reveal is yet another example of the ongoing coercive efforts by the White House to pressure social media companies into censoring American citizens,” said Landry.

Jemele Hill: Journalism At ESPN ‘a Difficult Balancing Act’

0

Whether or not Jemele Hill is still a sports writer can be debated. Her work now for Spotify and The Atlantic tends to cast a much wider net. But she is best known for her time at ESPN and that means when sports stories take on a social significance, she often has insight that other contributors to those companies do not.

That is the case with the way the media has reacted to a video of UFC boss Dana White slapping his wife inside a Mexican nightclub on New Year’s Eve.

In a new column for The Atlantic, Hill calls the story “the sports scandal almost nobody is talking about.” She notes that both Endeavor and ESPN, two companies with significant investments in the UFC have not been particularly outspoken about any consequences White could face.

“In fact,” she writes, “when I requested comment, a spokesperson declined to elaborate on network officials’ coverage decisions and instead emailed me multiple clips showcasing ESPN’s news coverage of White across the network’s digital, television, radio, and podcasting platforms.”

Jemele Hill points to a tweet from ESPN MMA writer Jeff Wagenheim that seems to call out the company’s position on the video.

Wagenheim later clarified that there were no specific instructions from his bosses about White. “In general we are strongly discouraged from incendiary posts on social media, and with a business partner things are sensitive,” he tweeted.

“Given ESPN’s huge financial stake in UFC’s success, Wagenheim’s revelation is hardly surprising,” Jemele Hill writes. “Because ESPN is a business partner of virtually every major sports league in the country—the NFL, the NBA, college sports, and professional soccer, among others—the network’s journalists face a difficult balancing act when major players of those leagues behave inappropriately.”

She added that her issue with ESPN is not that the network has refused to cover the story. It is that the coverage “has overall been pretty soft“. She pointed to a segment on First Take where both Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim seemed to let their respective personal relationships with Dana White dictate how they discussed the video.

Hill added that she has experience at ESPN with the difference between a story receiving “cursory coverage” and one becoming “a nonstop national conversation fueled by the massive sports-media machine.”

ESPN writers feeling compromised on this particular story is of note to Jemele Hill. She writes that White deserves criticism and he certainly seems to know that. She points to a second TMZ video in which White says he is embarrassed to have said for years that there is never an excuse for putting your hands on a woman and now he is having to answer questions about doing it himself.

Mike Tirico Shares Story Behind Lions Viral Sunday Night Football Intros

0

The Detroit Lions aren’t traditionally a team that sees many primetime games. After the franchise’s game against the Packers was slotted for Sunday Night Football, players took the opportunity to get creative with their introductions, which subsequently went viral on Twitter. Mike Tirico shared the story behind the introductions Monday.

“So most teams do those in August, and guys come in, it’s early in the year, and guys play it — mostly — straight up,” Tirico told 97.1 The Ticket’s Doug Karsch and Gator Anderson. “But because the Lions were not ticketed for a Sunday Night or Thursday Night game, the Lions were the rare team where you shot the lineup intros the week of the game. That rarely happens for us. So the guys all had to do them after practice on Thursday, I think it was. So when you watch the season full of introductions, you get very creative. And when you are a team in a good mood, you get very creative.”

Lions running back Jamaal Williams called himself “Swaggg Kazekage, leader of the hidden village in the den,” a reference to Japanese anime show Naruto. Meanwhile, linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez said he attended “Barry Sanders University”. The introductions were well received by fans, and Tirico added players were transparent with one another about what they would introduce themselves as, which only led to more and more outlandish submissions.

The Sunday Night Football voice also added that the game wasn’t high on his radar as one of the season’s best, but it certainly delivered.

“It was a funny part of what was a wildly, unexpectedly terrific night of football. One of the things you do when you get the schedule is look to see what is going to be game 272, the last game of the year. And if you looked at the 16 of them in September, that may have been 12th on the list. It turned out to be just fabulous.”

Rupert Murdoch Reportedly Wants Rebekah Brooks to Run Media Empire

0

While Rupert Murdoch continues to explore remerging his Fox Corp and News Corp into one entity, he reportedly has a leader in mind should he accomplish his wishes.

Lachlan Cartwright of The Daily Beast reports Murdoch wants Rebekah Brooks — the CEO of his company’s News division in the United Kingdom — to run his media conglomerate.

Brooks spent time atop The Sun tabloid before taking over News International before resigning after the News of the World phone-hacking scandal plagued the organization in 2011. That scandal ultimately led to the split of the two companies Murdoch would like to reunify.

Cartwright claims Murdoch, 91, would like to reunite his companies as a “swan song”, saying it’s one more “big deal” before “he departs to the big newsroom in the sky”.

Brooks is a pivotal figure in the Murdoch empire. Many believe Sunday Times editor Emma Tucker being elevated to Editor in Chief of The Wall Street Journal was at Brooks’ behest.
