Kirk Herbstreit: Grinding Prep Is My Brand In College and NFL

Kirk Herbstreit is covering NFL games for the first time in his life. He is the color commentator on Prime Video’s coverage of Thursday Night Football alongside Al Michaels. On Thursday, he told Pat McAfee that he is trying to stick to the prep process that has worked for him for years at ESPN.

“I gotta grind and study and be prepared, be the most prepared guy,” he said. “That’s kinda the brand I created in college and so when I go into the NFL. It’s kinda the same approach.”

He noted that some of his colleagues in similar positions have more impressive resumes from their playing careers. Kirk Herbstreit was a starting quarterback for a single season in college. He never played in the NFL.

Most fans know him as a broadcaster and as a broadcaster, fans expect him to have a lot of answers. He said that isn’t hard to do when you put as much time into studying game film as he does.

“Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and even right now on Thursday afternoon it is just everything I got into my preparation. So when I do that, I’ve found that the game is the game. You’re just kinda breaking the game down, but without the prep, I don’t know what I would do.”

With an unwavering belief in the knowledge he brings to the booth, Kirk Herbstreit said that his main focus this season has been creating a great television product. No matter the sport, format or show, all great television starts with the same thing.

“Developing chemistry is just such a big part of what you do on any show and so that is the part I really have been focused on, just giving Al [Michaels] his room and being respectful of that and then talking football and enjoying the hell out of it.”

Anaheim Ducks Leaving Terrestrial Radio

After the Anaheim Ducks contract with KLAA-AM expired, the team has decided to not move forward with a terrestrial radio station in Southern California, instead utilizing its 24/7 digital network with TuneIn called Ducks Stream.

“Let’s be honest, it’s crowded airwaves here in Southern California,” Ducks President Aaron Teats told Sports Business Journal. “We’ve had a terrific partner in AM 830 in the past on terrestrial radio, but even so we had conflicts and overlaps. That probably spurred us to at least work with a little bit more fever to get this accomplished.”

The Ducks plan to have 10 different shows based around the franchise, including an hourlong NHL news show, an interview show with GM Pat Verbeek, and a show focusing on former players and where they are today.

The Washington Capitals, San Jose Sharks, and Los Angeles Kings have also created digital audio networks.

To prep for the move, the franchise hired Joey Liberatore, who helped the Oakland A’s create its own digital network last year.

The Ducks announced Duck Stream before the start of training camp, but at the time believed a deal would be struck with Angels Radio AM 830, which is owned by Los Angeles Angels owner Artie Moreno. However, the digital network will now be the exclusive home for radio play-by-play.

Mets Broadcaster Keith Hernandez Says Contract Is Up, Wants to Return

A couple of weeks after injuring his shoulder and undergoing season-ending surgery, New York Met’s broadcaster Keith Hernandez revealed that his contract is up after this season.

Hernandez joined his SNY partners via speakerphone during the Mets final game of the regular season on Wednesday evening. During it, Ron Darling brought up Hernandez’s impending contract negotiations.

“Keith, since no one’s really listening,” said Darling, “I would advise that when you go into your hotly contested contract negotiations, you try to wash away these games that you had to miss at the end of the season.”

Gary Cohen jumped in.

“Wait a second! His contract is up? Wait a second, are you saying this could be the last conversation the three of us ever have?”

“That’s not in my hands,” Hernandez replied. “I would love to come back, that’s for sure. I enjoy what I do, I enjoy working with you guys.”

MLB.TV Has Most Watched Season Ever

The 2022 MLB season has come to a close and it rates as the most watched season ever on MLB.TV.

The league’s streaming service for out-of-market games registered 11.5 billion minutes watched. That represents the most minutes watched in the service’s 20-year history and the first time MLB.TV has surpassed 11 billion minutes watched.

The service is up 9.8% over last season’s numbers that went over 10.5 billion minutes watched which was the previous record. Of the ten most-watched games in MLB.TV’s history, the top five and nine of the top ten, came in 2022. The most-watched game this season, and ever for MLB.TV was Opening Day for the Red Sox-Yankees on April 8.

Spencer Hall: ‘I Can’t Wait To Hear Charles Barkley Talk About Tom Brady’s Divorce’

Plenty of thoughts have been shared and jokes have been made after the news of Tom Brady and Gisel Bündchen hiring divorce attorneys became public. While it is likely that Brady himself will not comment on the matter, Spencer Hall of the SEC Network believes there is one member of the sports media that could force the Buccaneers’ QB to address it.

“No one will mention this and this will be a source of adversity for him to overcome over the next season,” he said on the Meadowlark Media podcast The Shutdown Fullcast this week. “There will be one public address of Tom Brady’s personal life and it will be when he does the next golf tournament in the offseason the event where it’s like him and Aaron Rodgers.”

Hall was referencing The Match, a made-for-TV charity golf event staged by Turner Sports. Brady has participated in three of the six matches since the event’s inception in 2018. In June of this year, Brady partnered with Aaron Rodgers to defeat Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes in a matchplay event.

“They do some gentle ribbing and then they say ‘Hey, isn’t Charles (Barkley) in the studio?’ and he’s gonna be like ‘Hey, you missed that fairway like you miss your wife,’” Hall said.

Barkley has been a part of every edition of The Match either as a competitor or as part of the broadcast team.

Spencer Hall had his colleagues laughing as he donned a Charles Barkley impersonation and delivered lines like “There ain’t a tomato or a coaster in that house.”

“That’s what I’m waiting for. I’m waiting for Barkley to get on an open mic,” he added. “You know he’s gonna do this too and it’s gonna be the funniest thing you’ve ever heard.”

Howard and Jeremy: Richard Sherman Can’t Hold Back On Russell Wilson

Richard Sherman is a large part of Amazon Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football studio crew. In the past, he’s been critical of former teammate Russell Wilson, and WGR’s morning show Howard and Jeremy looks forward to what Sherman will say about Wilson during tonight’s Colts and Broncos broadcast.

“He’s gone after Russ and the kind of guy that he is on podcasts and everything. You’ve got Richard Sherman talking Russ,” Jeremy White said.

In September, Sherman took to The Richard Sherman Podcast on The Volume to say Wilson was held to a different standard than the rest of the Seahawks during their time together, which caused “friction”. He also said criticized Wilson for his inability to be the “coach on the field” as a quarterback. “Certain quarterbacks, you blame the coach,” Sherman said after the Broncos lost to Seattle in the season opener after Wilson didn’t call timeout in the final moments of the game. “Certain quarterbacks, you blame the quarterback. And if it was any of those quarterbacks, you’re not talking about the coach. You’re being like, ‘Why didn’t Peyton call timeout right there?’”

Joe DiBiase, filling in for Howard Simon, said he believes Sherman can’t hold back now.

“He’s gotta unleash, right? He’ll know he can’t hold back. If he holds back, everyone will know ‘Oh, you’re just tight-lipped. You’re making it clean. We’re not getting the real Richard Sherman on Amazon’. Oh yeah. He’s gotta go off. I wanna hear the harshest criticism at halftime that we’ve ever heard.”

Keith Olbermann Mocks Mark Levin After January 6th Committee Outburst

Conservative radio host Mark Levin recently had an outburst after discovering his emails with John Eastman had been given to the January 6th Committee. Podcaster Keith Olbermann mocked Levin, and his voice, for his failure to grasp how the committee could have gotten his email.

Calling Levin “the high-pitched fascist radio host and weekend guy at Fox Nudes [sic]”, the Countdown With Keith Olbermann host said “Levin does not understand how the law or emails work. He exchanged emails — a dozen of them or more — with Coup-plotter John Eastman. And they wound up in the possession of the January 6th Committee. So — naturally — he went on radio and threatened the members of the committee.

“‘How the hell did the government get 13 of my emails?'”, Olbermann said in a voice mocking that of Levin’s. “‘I never got a subpoena. I was never given notice.’ Yeah, see, you only need to subpoena one of the people in the email exchange, Mr. Levin.”

He then continued quoting Levin in a mocking, high-pitched voice. “‘What else did they look at? I’m telling you now, you stick with me. I’m gonna find out who every one of these G.D. [sic] staffers are on that damn committee. Every one of those Congress asses on that damn committee. Every damn one of them. I’m not going to be intimidated. Life’s too damn short to be intimidated.’

“He just threatened every January 6th Committee member and staffer. And in a falsetto. Arrest him!”

Dominion Lawsuit Alleges Fox News CEO Warned Staffers About ‘The Crazies’ After 2020 Election

According to Dominion Voting Systems, which is seeking $1.6 billion from Fox in a defamation lawsuit, Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott told staffers “we can’t give the crazies an inch”, after the network called Arizona for now-President Joe Biden during the 2020 Presidential election.

Fox News was the first network to call the state for Biden, which eventually propelled him to the Presidency.

A report from NPR details that Dominion’s lawyers claimed the company should receive the employment contracts of 13 Fox News executives, including Scott. A Delaware Superior Court Judge agreed.

Justin Nelson, Dominion’s lead attorney, claims Fox News executives tried to block Lou Dobbs and Maria Bartiromo from featuring Trump attorneys Sidney Powel and Rudy Giuliani from appearing on network shows to repeat false claims that the election was stolen from Trump. Fox’s attorney did not dispute or refute either the claims made by Nelson.

An upcoming book, The Divider, claims Fox News anchor Bret Baier shared he was receiving “intense pressure” from the Trump campaign to reverse the network’s call that Biden had won Arizona. The book alleges Baier asked Fox News President Jay Wallace to retract the call, which he has denied.

In a statement given to Barrett News Media by a Fox News spokesperson, Baier said “The full context of the e-mail is not reported in this book. I never said the Trump campaign ‘was really pissed’ – that was from an external email that I referenced within my note. This was an email sent AFTER election night.

“In the immediate days following the election, the vote margins in Arizona narrowed significantly and I communicated these changes to our team along with what people on the ground were saying and predicting district by district. I wanted to analyze at what point (what vote margin) would we have to consider pulling the call for Biden. I also noted that I fully supported our decision desk’s call and would defend it on air.”

77WABC Remembers Bernie McGuirk

77WABC was in the unenviable task of remembering Bernie McGuirk Thursday morning after the morning host passed away at the age of 64 after a battle with prostate cancer.

Curtis Sliwa and Frank Morano anchored the coverage during the usual Bernie & Sid In The Morning timeslot. They welcomed a bevy of guests to discuss the life and legacy of McGuirk.

Station owner John Catsimatidis told the crew he was told Wednesday evening that McGuirk was likely to pass. “I knew something was wrong because every Sunday I would go to church and light a candle for Bernie. And last Sunday, I lit a candle and I would send it to Bernie by texting it to him. And for the first time, I did not get an answer back. And I gulp in my stomach. There’s no other way to say it. You guys worked with Bernie for a long, long time, and you know how much more than I knew him. He was a great guy, he said it the way it was, and he people respected him because he would say it the way it was — the way he felt — without mincing any words. He has been missed for the last few months, and will be missed.”

Bill O’Reilly joined the program to discuss the legacy of McGuirk.

“It’s my honor to talk about McGuirk,” he said. “I always called him by his last name because that’s what Irish guys in New York do,” O’Reilly said before noting he and McGuirk have lived similar lives from their Irish home upbringing in the Bronx to news radio and television stardom.

“I put him on television with (Greg) Gutfeld for Gutfeld & McGuirk, as McGurik would demand, McGuirk & Gutfeld. And there were two together and me. And we would just kick it around. A fabulous segment, and he took that edge and brought it to WABC. When we think about Bernard McGuirk’s life, the capstone of his life was the enormous success he had with Rosenberg. I’ve said this before — and I don’t blow smoke with anybody, you guys at WABC know that — what Bernie and Sid have done in the morning is unprecedented. It’s never happened, not only in New York but anywhere in the country. You take a station that is basically over in the marketplace. Number 22 or 23. (John) Catsimatidis buys it, Lopez is there, they reconfigure the talent and now in the morning it’s number one.”

Sid Rosenberg spoke about the relationship he had with his co-host and friend.

“It’s a tough morning,” a somber Rosenberg said before thanking Sliwa and Morano for hosting the show, as well as those who had called in to remember McGuirk. “I spoke to Bernard last Wednesday — and I even made the comparison to Jim Caan’s character in Brian’s Song — his voice was so weak. We had a nice conversation. He thanked me for what I did at the Gala, and the last thing he said was ‘I love you’ and I said ‘I love you, too’. This is an immense loss. We knew this day was coming, but when it comes it’s not easy. Today’s not about me, but a lot of people turned their backs on me, but he never did. He never did. I’m just very sad today. Probably shouldn’t even call in, but I feel like I need to,” Rosenberg said as he fought back tears. “I’m gonna miss him.”

Angelo Cataldi Presses Rod Lakin On Replacement Question

94 WIP Brand Manager Rod Lakin joined Angelo Cataldi on his show Thursday morning for a wide-ranging discussion. Lakin recently celebrated one year on the job at 94 WIP, and Cataldi peppered him with questions about how Philadelphia compares to Phoenix, where Lakin worked as the Program Director of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.

Near the end of the conversation, Cataldi brought up his impending retirement, which he says he’ll leave when the Eagles season is over, or when they’re no longer in contention, whichever happens first.

“Alright, Rod, moment of truth here,” Cataldi cautioned Lakin. “I did warn him I was gonna ask him this because how can I have on our boss — I get literally dozens or hundreds in a week saying ‘Who the hell is gonna replace you?’ Rod Lakin, who is going to replace me and when the hell are you going to announce it?”

“I can’t make an announcement right now,” Lakin said. “I’ll just tell you it will be sooner rather than later. Sorry.”

“Are you answering the question?!”, Cataldi asked.

“I’m not gonna answer the question right now,” Lakin replied.

“My own boss said ‘no comment’!”, Cataldi shouted.

“I’ll say this. They’re big shoes to fill and we have to make sure we do our due diligence to make sure that we’re replacing a legend,” said Lakin.

“That’s awfully nice of you to say, Rod. It’s been a great year with you. It’ll be a great couple more months, and I’m assuming it’ll be soon,” Cataldi said. “I know a lot of people are dying to find out. And whoever it is, they will have my full support to do not quite as well as me but far better than any other station.”

The lighthearted nature of the conversation continued after listeners chanted co-host Rhea Hughes’ name, Cataldi told Lakin “I’m sure you’ll make the right call”.
