Kristina Koppeser Named New KYW Brand Manager

KYW Newsradio in Philadelphia has announced Kristina Koppeser, known as “Luca”, as the station’s new Brand Manager and Director of Digital Content.

The station also named Tom Rickert as Assistant Brand Manager and Director of Podcasting.

“The passion, tenacity, and dedication of the KYW newsroom is unrivaled,” said Koppeser. “Having the privilege of working alongside and learning from these award-winning journalists inspires me every day. I am honored to help write the next chapter of KYW Newsradio and to continue to serve the greater Philadelphia region with the top-notch local news that matters most.”

Koppeser joined KYW in 2021 as Digital Managing Editor. She has more than a decade of experience in the digital space. Koppeser replaces Alex Silverman, who departed the station in July to become the Director of News and Programming of KNX News in Los Angeles.

Rickert has worked at the station since 2011, and was elevated to Director of Podcasting in 2021.

Boomer & Gio: Yankees Won’t Sit Aaron Judge Because Friday Game Is On AppleTV+

Much has been made about a potential Yankees and American League record-breaking home run hit by Aaron Judge on AppleTV+, and a caller on Boomer & Gio wondered if the game being on a lesser platform could alter than Yankees approach to the game.

“I’m just curious if anyone would consider sitting Judge on Friday because the majority of people are not gonna be able get to the game. Whether you’re going to a bar — my father, my father-in-law — AppleTV is way beyond their scope of getting it,” the caller said. “And they watch every game all year long. Do you think they’d even consider the idea of having him sit out Friday night so most Yankee fans can see it?”

“Absolutely not,” Esiason said.

“No way,” Giannotti continued. “You have plenty of time to figure this out. Plenty of time. And by the way, it’s free. I know you have to sign up and you gotta create an account, but it’s free to watch the Yankee game on AppleTV+.”

“Assuming that you have a smart TV, or an AppleTV, or you have a Roku, there’s a lot of people that don’t have that,” Esiason countered.

Major League Baseball has confirmed the game will continue to air on AppleTV+ after calls to move it to a different outlet. The Yankees other games this week while Judge chases the franchise and American League record for home runs in a single season will air on YES Network, MLB Network, FOX, and ESPN.

Mike Gallagher: MSNBC Contributor Elie Mystal A ‘Whackjob’

MSNBC contributor Elie Mystal recently had a strong reaction to Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) sending illegal immigrants on planes and busses to other cities. Conservative radio host Mike Gallagher was dumbfounded by Mystal’s comments.

“Listen to this whackjob over on MSNBC,” Gallagher began. “Somebody named Elie Mystal, who’s one of the superstars over at MSNBC. They trot this guy out all the time on MSNBC. You gotta listen carefully to his unhinged response over Martha’s Vineyard and Washington D.C. crumbling because a couple of busloads or plane loads of illegals ‘this is actual kidnapping. You can’t put illegals on an air conditioned bus or a plane for D.C. or Martha’s Vineyard. It’s cruelty. It’s kidnapping.'”

Gallagher then played a clip of Mystal on MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan Show where The Nation writer said sending migrants in busses and airplanes to locations under false pretenses was kidnapping. He compared the events to telling your children you were taking them to Disney World but then visiting Busch Gardens and Colonial Williamsburg instead.

“I give you my word, I’m promising you, that’s an actual news clip from MSNBC. That’s an actual Democrat pundit named Elie Mystal saying if you take kids to Busch Gardens after promising them a trip to Disney World, that is kidnapping.”

Twitch Bans Crypto-Gambling Livestreams

Twitch has announced a ban on controversial crypto-gambling livestreams after several multi-million dollar sponsorship deals were struck by the platform’s top personalities.

“While we prohibit sharing links or referral codes to all sites that include slots, roulette or dice games, we’ve seen some people circumvent those rules and expose our community to potential harm,” Twitch said in a statement on Twitter.

Crypto-gambling livestreams have become a phenomenon on the platform, often garnering more than 50,000 viewers per stream. Several of the streamer’s most prominent personalities had threatened to stop streaming on the website if action wasn’t taken.

Several of the culprits shown crypto-gambling on the site are doing so with websites not licensed in the United States, which opened Twitch up to legal ramifications.

The ban will begin on Tuesday, October 18th.

WTOP Top Billing Station Of 2021, 3 Other News Station In Top 10

BIA Advisory Services has unveiled its top 10 billing radio stations and radio ownership groups, and news station WTOP in Washington D.C. was again the top-billing station in 2021.

According to BIA Advisory Services, WTOP billed $70 million in 2021, slightly less than double second-place 102.7 KISS-FM in Los Angeles at $43 million. WTOP’s revenue increased 12% in 2021, and exceeded it’s pre-pandemic totals of 2019.

Three other news radio stations, all owned by Audacy, joined WTOP in the top 10:

-Newsradio 780 WBBM (Chicago) was the fourth highest billing station of the year at $34 million
-1010 WINS (New York) finished the year billing $31.6 million, good for 8th
-Newsradio 880 WCBS (New York) brought in $30.9 million, good for 10th

For entire radio entities, iHeartMedia led with more than $2.2 billion in revenue in 2021. Audacy was 2nd with $1.3 billion, with Cumulus rounding out the top three with $481 million in revenue. Hubbard, TelevisaUnivision, Beasley, Townsquare, Cox, Urban One, and Bonneville rounded out the top 10.

MoffettNathanson projects radio revenues in 2022 to increase by 3%.

MLB, NBA, NHL Could Buy Bally Sports RSN’s

With Sinclair-owned Diamond Sports continuing to lose millions, professional sports leagues MLB, NBA, and NHL could be the prospective buyers of the Bally Sports-branded regional sports networks.

A report from The New York Post suggests Diamond Sports could be forced into bankruptcy in the next three to six months if a buyer for the networks isn’t found. The company has reportedly told the 14 MLB teams, 16 NBA teams, and 12 NHL teams whose television rights it currently holds that if it is forced into bankruptcy, the networks will still be able to broadcast live games, but will not need to pay rights fees due to bankruptcy protection from its creditors.

Diamond Sports purchased 21 regional sports networks in 2019 at auction for $10.6 billion. Current estimates put its operating debt at over $8 billion. The Post reports Diamond Sports pays $450 million in interest payments on its bet, which is more than double its annual revenue from the networks.

The news of a potential sale comes on the heels of Diamond Sports announcing an over-the-top streaming service. Bally Sports+ is slated to debut on Monday, September 26th at a price of $20 per month for fans to watch in-market contests without a cable subscription. Thus far, Major League Baseball has only given the platform the rights to five of the 14 teams the regional sports networks hold the rights for.

Kenny Albert ‘Absolutely’ Wants to Call Super Bowl

Kenny Albert has grown into one of the biggest play-by-play announcers in sports. And yet, there are still career achievements that elude him.

Albert joined The Sports-Casters podcast to discuss a variety of topics, but when asked about hist future and what he still wants to accomplish, he had one goal still in mind.

“As play-by-play broadcasters, color analysts, sideline reporters, you’re always striving to work the biggest events,” Albert said. “I’ve been real fortunate with the Stanley Cup Final on radio for a number of years and then on television in 2021 for NBC and this coming year with Turner. Baseball playoffs. NBA Playoffs. On the football side, Divisional playoff games for many years.

“I called one Super Bowl. It was the world feed — the international feed — of Super Bowl XLVI. That’s the goal, still, after all these years. Would I love to call another Super Bowl? Absolutely. On a major network for the first time, there’s nothing more that I would love to do than add that to the resume, along with the Stanley Cup Final, hopefully for a long, long time.”

Albert currently announces NFL games for FOX, as he’s paired with color analyst Jonathan Vilma, and sideline reporter Shannon Spake. He is the longest tenured FOX NFL announcer, joining the network for its inaugural season televising the league in 1994.

Daily Wire’s Ben Shapiro Clashes With Canada’s CBC

Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro said during his nationally syndicated radio show Tuesday that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) unleashed an article blaming him for violent extremism. 

The article titled “’It’s a slippery slope’: How young men fall into online radicalization” accuses Shapiro of having views that are “discriminatory” citing an instance where he said transgender people suffer from mental illness. 

“It is fun to watch how the left treats slippery slope arguments when they are coming from their side,” Shapiro stated. Apparently, it is fully OK to make a slippery slope argument when I say something that is not extreme.” 

The article chronicles the plight of Reid Brown who told the CBC that he got sucked into a YouTube algorithm at the age of 13. He told the outlet that he was directed toward fashion shows and eventually he found Ben Shapiro. 

“What they want to say here of course is that I am alt-right. The problem is, people in the media including The Economist have attempted to call me alt-right before and we have then threatened them with legal action,” Shapiro said. 

Shapiro added that he’s been critical of the alt-right or alternative right before. A classification used to describe white nationalist groups or individuals. 

Shapiro defended his views and denied being discriminatory.  

“What are my discriminatory views? It seems to me that I’ve always been of the viewpoint that people should be treated as individuals.”

Clay Travis Slams The Atlantic Over Separating Sports by Sex

Radio host Clay Travis blasted a story from The Atlantic that centers on separating sports by sex. The article drew the ire of the “Clay & Buck” host Tuesday. 

“Separating Sports by Sex Doesn’t Make Sense” appeared in The Atlantic last weekend. 

Travis called the article one of the “dumbest stories he’d ever seen.” He added that it marked the natural evolution of the argument that men can compete against women. 

“The whole Lia Thomas madness where you had a dude who decided to become a woman and then became the greatest woman swimmer of the year in college athletics. Left-wingers are just going to say we need to have a unisex category,” he said.  

Travis stated writer Maggie Mertens trots out things that aren’t true. 

Mertens wrote that school sports are typically self-segregated, and decades of research has shown that sex is far more complex than we may think. Her reporting is based on a Bronx, New York girl named Shira Mandelzis who tries out for her school football team.

“This has become a big deal,” Travis observed. “Biology isn’t true to left-wingers anymore. Let me be clear here, there is no chick in America that is going to be faster than Usain Bolt. There is no one in the history of women’s athletics who is going to be as great a quarterback as Tom Brady.” 

Travis said tennis great Serena Williams is a prime example of why sports should be separated by sex. He said several professional tennis players told him that as great of talent as Williams was, she wouldn’t make it on many top-level NCAA Division 1 team. 

“Some of these quotes in this story are crazy,” he added.

Todd Starnes: Nothing Good Comes From TikTok

Syndicated talk host Todd Starnes warned his listeners Tuesday that nothing good ever comes from watching TikTok. 

Starnes was referring to a new challenge sweeping the platform called the “Nyquil Chicken Challenge.” The video prompted a press release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning users not to participate in the challenge. 

“On Tik Tok all you have is lesbian and transgender schoolteachers and people who marinate chicken in Nyquil,” Starnes joked. 

Starnes said the FDA has warned people that they could die if they marinate their chicken in the drug. 

“The fact that some people think this is OK shows that our country is doomed currently,” said executive producer Grace Baker. 

Starnes said he’s never seen anything like this. 

“This is the nighttime, sniffing, sneezing, achy, stuffy medicine so you can rest better,” added Starnes. “For the record, if you want to do anything with chicken you have to marinate it in a lovely bath of buttermilk and hot sauce, you salt and pepper the chicken and then you put it in a cast iron skillet.” 

“What’s next Sudafed Souffle? What about a Tylenol turnover?”  

A recent TikTok trend involving Benadryl encouraged young users to drink an excess amount to produce a hallucinogenic effect.
