Erin Andrews Relives Frightening Experience While Interviewing Aaron Rodgers

Erin Andrews was all set to begin her season with the new FOX top broadcast crew but to hear her tell it, that almost didn’t happen.

Andrews told the story of a frightening near disaster on the road on her way to cover the Packers/Vikings game this last weekend. She told Charissa Thompson, co-host of the Calm Down with Erin and Charissa podcast, that her driver fell asleep while she was in the back of the car prepping for the game.

Andrews said that she was on a conference call with Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen with members of the Packers, including Aaron Rodgers when she heard a noise she didn’t want to hear.

“I’m typing, headphones are working, we’re good,” she began. “I hear snoring. I know it’s not Greg Olsen, Kevin Burkhardt or Aaron Rodgers snoring. It’s my driver who fell asleep at the wheel. On a highway from Chicago!”  

Andrews would continue the heart-racing story.

“I am so thankful I put my phone on mute because we’re on a Zoom. I put my phone on mute and I go ‘ARE YOU EFFING SLEEPING?!'”

She then mentioned just how awful this experience was for her emotionally.

“So now I have the quarterback of the team I’m trying to work on, I’m trying to take notes. I have full blown anxiety. This is not the way I want to go down. This is not the way I want to die…”

Andrews then tried to solve the problem by attempting to help her sleepy driver out.

“After Aaron [Rodgers] gets off, I go ‘pull over at a Starbucks,’” she said. “I make him pull over at a McDonald’s. I go in, I get him a coffee. He doesn’t drink it. The entire car ride I am like ‘ahem ahem ahem’ monitoring if he’s sleeping at the wheel.”    

Michael Kay: ‘Will Be Bummer’ If YES Network Not On Aaron Judge Historic Homer

In an interview with The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand, YES Network announcer Michael Kay admitted what many already knew: he wants to be on the call for a potential Aaron Judge historic home run.

Judge currently sits at 57 homers on the season. The Yankees record is 61, hit by Roger Maris in 1961.

Kay might not get the opportunity, however. The Yankees begin a four-game series against the Red Sox next weekend, with only one of the four games airing on YES Network.

“I’ve thought about it,” Kay said. “I’m not going to be selfish. When he does it, he does. It will be a bummer if YES is not covering it. Forget about just me, but for YES, that would stink. It is what it is. And if he hits it on one of the days that we’re not doing the game and we just have to live with it.”

Kay told Marchand he hasn’t considered what he would say in the moment when Judge potentially delivers the record.

“You get a little nervous because you want to do it justice,” Kay said. “You don’t ever want to mess up his moment. That’s all I care about. I don’t care about putting my imprint on it. I just want to know 40 years from now when [Judge] watches this that you know, it’s not going to be a screwed up call for him. I just think about making the call, but certainly not what I’m going to say.”

Chris Fowler: ‘Wasn’t Good Enough’ During Ohio State/Notre Dame Game

In life, we all set high expectations for ourselves that are greater than what others expect from us. That holds true for Chris Fowler, who is not only the voice of tennis on ESPN, but the voice of college football as well.

Fowler was a guest on The Ryen Russillo Podcast and he told Russillo that he is always looking to improve, but that college football is also the most challenging sport to call because of how it has changed over the years.

“I think you always have to improve. I still want to get better at it. I still think I can. I think I need to. I felt it has been tough to improve in football the last few years because we had the COVID year with empty stadiums, no energy, no access to players and coaches like we had before. I felt it was impossible to meet that standard. I had to sort of modify it a bit. 2021, it got a little bit better.”

“It is totally different than covering tennis. Tennis, you prepare not having to relearn the personalities and the names. I think college football, personally, is the most challenging sport to call. The tempo offenses in college have made it different. We can’t have a broadcast sound like Keith Jackson sounded or Curt Gowdy or Brent [Musberger]. Things have changed so much that the audience has changed, the tempo of the sport has changed (faster and louder). Then, still trying to layer in, prepare better, be more efficient.”

Fowler has high expectations for himself and he even admitted that he didn’t live up to those standards during the broadcast of Notre Dame-Ohio State. Even though he was also calling likely the final matches of Serena Williams’ career during that week, he would not use that as an excuse.

“I didn’t meet my standard at Ohio State-Notre Dame. Just wasn’t good enough. Was bothered by it. No excuses, but you are doing tennis for 4 days. Serena’s matches took a ton of energy. It is the first time I’ve done that particular job in about 9 months, so I thought I sucked in certain places in that game in ways that you hope not too many viewers noticed, but I certainly noticed. I don’t know if Kirk [Herbstreit] felt to that degree, but I think we felt it could have been a lot better. It was cool to go back the next day and call tennis and cleanse the palate…I think I can do a pretty good job. I am trying to meet my own standard and that’s really what matters to me.” 

In terms of calling both tennis and college football, Fowler said it’s easier to lay out for the crowd in tennis because it is not what he calls a see it, say it sport like football is.

“Part of it is it’s hard to yell over the crowd. At the US Open, it is so loud that if you try to talk right after a point or when they’re going crazy, you just get smothered….Football is a see it, say it sport. It moves so quickly. When you see it, you have only a split second to filter it. In tennis, when you watch a point unfold, if it’s a lengthy rally, you might have 10 things  pop into your head but then it continues…You are constantly editing it in your head and sometimes you end up saying nothing at the end of a point because the point speaks for itself.

“I think the crowd largely speaks for itself and the pictures largely speak for themselves in tennis and I enjoy that piece of it.” 

Tomi Lahren: Brian Stelter Harvard Fellowship ‘Worse For Our Country’ Than CNN Show

Former CNN Reliable Sources host Brian Stelter is joining Harvard University as a Media and Democracy Fellow this fall, and Fox News contributor Tomi Lahren says it “may be worse for our country” than his job at CNN.

In her Fox News Commentary Wednesday, Lahren said Stelter would be “educating ivy league students on threats to democracy and the state of the news media” adding Stelter will be “bringing CNN to campus. I would fear this kind of liberal indoctrination seminar would poison the minds of Harvard students, but let’s be real, they attend Harvard so the damage has already likely been done.”

She latter jabbed that luckily for Stelter, he’ll have a “captive audience that can’t shut off the TV or change the channel”.

Stelter’s firing from CNN was widely applauded by conservative media figures. Several other conservatives have panned Harvard’s decision to bring Stelter aboard, including Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters.

JRSportBrief Kicking Off 2022 Media For The Movement Tour Next Week

CBS Sports Radio night host JRSportBrief is hitting the road again in 2022. He will launch the second edition of his Media For The Movement Tour With Special Olympics on Tuesday at Fordham University in New York City.

The tour will give college students the chance to interact with JR (real last name Jackson) and Special Olympics athletes as they discuss the shifting media environment and best practices for creating content for radio, television, and digital platforms.

It is a path that JR Jackson has a very particular level of expertise in. He launched his sports media career with a popular YouTube show that was launched while his primary radio job was at Atlanta’s V-103.

Media for the Movement launched last year with an 25-stop tour. The 2022 tour will make 15 stops. After Fordham, Jackson and company will go to Drexel University in Philadelphia followed by Tulane University in New Orleans.

“Our Media for the Movement tour with Special Olympics last year was a success,” Jackson told BSM. “I’m excited to share my story, encourage others, and highlight inclusivity in sports and health. We can all do a better job opening doors to those not directly in our circle. It makes us better as individuals and as a society! I appreciate Experian for believing in inclusivity and helping me personally get that message from campus to campus.”

Jomboy Media Secures $5 Million In Latest Fundraising Round

According to a report from Zach Schonbrun of The New York Times, Jomboy Media has secured another $5 million of funding in a round conducted by Connect Ventures.

Jomboy Media, which has nearly tripled its staff since 2021, has seen expansive growth “without getting away from what made them relatable in the first place”, Schonbrun wrote.

Schonburn also reports celebrities and athletes were included as investors during the latest round of fundraising, but did not report any by name.

Jomboy Media currently features content deals with YES Network as well as podcasts hosted by Chris Rose, as well as current and former big leaguers Trevor Plouffe, Ian Happ, David Cone, and former front office executive Jim Duquette.

Alexis Ohanian, who joined the company as an investor in a previous fundraising effort, said Jomboy Media is “making the sport of baseball accessible to an entire generation” by their use of social and digital media.

The growing empire features 1.6 million YouTube subscribers and more than 900,000 followers on Twitter and Instagram.

Sandy Clough Retiring From Full-Time Role With 104.3 the Fan

Sandy Clough has been with 104.3 The Fan in Denver for 25 years. On Friday, the station announced that his time as a day-to-day host on the station is coming to an end.

“I’ve had a tremendous experience over the past 25 years sharing my opinions and interacting with our wonderful listeners at The Fan,” Clough said in a press release. “Being able to share in the joy of Denver’s wins while consoling the city’s heartbreak of losses was a privilege and responsibility I was honored to have. I’m very grateful and appreciative for all of the amazing colleagues I’ve had the opportunity to call teammates, and most of all I’m extremely thankful to The Fan audience who took the time to listen in and interact during our shows.” 

Since 1997, fans have heard Clough in a variety of roles on The Fan. He has hosted daily shows in multiple day parts. He has also served as the anchor for many of the station’s postgame shows.

“Like so many other Denver sports fans, I spent hours glued to The Fan listening to Sandy Clough entertain and educate,” The Fan’s program director Raj Sharan added. “It was thrilling to have the opportunity to produce Sandy as there’s never been a more prepared host. Sandy’s passion came through the speakers in captivating fashion, and his legacy will be forever engrained into The Fan, carrying on for generations to come.”

Clough’s time in Denver is not limited to 104.3 The Fan. He first arrived in town in 1979 to work with the Denver Broncos Radio Network. He was a studio host for the games on KOA. He was heard on 1090 KBIG from 1990 until 1996.

“Sandy Clough has had an incredible broadcasting career, leaving behind a standard of excellence on The Fan that will carry on for years to come,” said Bonneville Denver SVP/Market Manager Katie Reid. “We are all incredibly thankful to Sandy for all of his contributions and his unwavering commitment to quality programming on The Fan over the past 25 years.”

The first Thursday Night Football broadcast streamed exclusively on Amazon Prime Video last night, with differing experiences for viewers. Boomer Esiason and Gregg Giannotti of WFAN’s Boomer & Gio had a unique experience watching the first stream.

“Just looking at social media last night, it didn’t look like there were so many people that were totally turned off by this,” Giannotti said. “That they weren’t watching or had issues and couldn’t find it or whatever else. I think that — for the most part — people knew it was on Amazon and you didn’t have that like complete screaming from the top of the mountain by sports fans when you had our first Facebook Live Mets game or our first AppleTV Yankees game or Peacock Yankees game at 11:30 and people had no idea. It felt like — because it’s been such a big deal and we’ve talked about it so much — that everybody knew where to find the game.”

Giannotti, who has previously said the NFL and Amazon will spin the ratings numbers to make the venture look like a success, then noted he went to a bar to watch the first half of the game, but noted as soon as the pregame began, the splitter being used by the bar to stream to multiple TVs no longer worked.

“So then, they had to sign in to every television in there with somebody else’s Amazon account. And guess what happens then? They’re not all in sync! So one TV is five seconds ahead of the other one. Another TV is 20 seconds behind the other one. And they weren’t in sync for whatever reason.”

“I had it on my iPad,” Esiason said. “So I was wifi-ing on my iPad. No problem on my Amazon Prime app. And then when the Met game ended, I switched my TV over to AppleTV and put it on Prime Video on my TV and I had them both going at the same time. And my TV was ahead of my iPad.”

“That’s a problem for bars,” Giannotti added.

Bill Spadea Facing Defamation Lawsuit

New Jersey 101.5 morning host Bill Spadea is being sued for defamation by a child psychologist who was a guest on his show.

Steven Tobias works at the Center for Child and Family Development filed the suit earlier this week, alleging Spadea defamed him in August 2022 during a “town hall” broadcast on the station by saying Tobias should be indicted for child abuse for his insistence that masks be worn by children in public schools. Spadea also allegedly encouraged parents to “reject crackpots” like Tobias.

Tobias, who has made appearances on the station for more than 15 years, claims he didn’t encourage mask-wearing in schools while on the station. In fact, he claims he said the opposite, saying “the worst thing a parent or caregiver can do is to abruptly try to force a young child to wear a mask”.

Spadea has yet to respond publicly, but did retweet a post made supporting him in the lawsuit that said the host “spoke the truth from the beginning of the lockdown and got it right”.

Charlie Kirk: Dana Bash Doesn’t Ask Tough Questions

Charlie Kirk went after CNN’s Dana Bash Thursday for, in his eyes, her lack of pushback on statements made by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in regards to the threat that domestic terrorists pose to the nation.

“Now, of course, Dana Bash on CNN does not ask the questions. ‘Hey, Hillary, what instance of political violence can you cite?’ Of course, they always mention January 6th, but post that, what example recently can you show that the conservative movement is openly and engaging in violence against people they disagree with? Can you just give us a couple of examples? Because I can give you plenty of examples of the American Left and the Democrat party using violence to accomplish their means.

“They burnt down our entire country during the summer of BLM during Floyd-a-palooza. Antifa. Campus violence that we experience at Turning Point USA and I have personally experienced. How about Brett Kavanaugh? Trying to assassinate Brett Kavanaugh. Or going in front of Supreme Court justices homes. Harassing them, illegally and the Department of Justice doing nothing. Now, of course, Dana Bash of CNN would never ask such a question.”

It’s not the first time Kirk has criticized CNN. Last month, he accused the network, along with other media outlets for “trying to bankrupt” InfoWars host Alex Jones.
