CNN, MSNBC Boosted By ‘Soul of the Nation’ Speech

0

The “Battle for the Soul of the Nation” speech delivered by the President helped both CNN and MSNBC in the cable news ratings battle earlier this month.

President Biden’s speech on Thursday, Sep. 1 from Philadelphia’s Independence Hall was an attempt at bucking an historic trend. Since the end of World War II, the midterm elections have not been kind to a sitting President and his political party. Only twice before has the President’s party maintained the majority in the House of Representatives in Congress. Both those times occurring amidst extraordinary circumstances — the Democrats in 1998 with Bill Clinton in office, during a year when Republicans impeached him for his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky; and, the Republicans in 2002 during George W. Bush’s presidency, one year following the 9/11 attacks.

Of course, our current political environment can also be described as extraordinary. Biden’s presidency follows a tumultuous and chaos-riddled four years of Donald Trump which featured the revamping of the Supreme Court that led to the near-five decade ruling of Roe v. Wade to be overturned, more than a million Americans having succumbed to COVID-19 and the insurrection at the Capitol that attempted to decertify the 2020 presidential election results.

Biden’s case to Americans on that night was to make clear that Trump and his “MAGA Republicans” are trying to subvert democracy with an “extreme ideology.” Ideally, Biden and his administration hoped to reach a significant portion of the prime time TV audience on this Sep. 1st night. The event certainly boosted the outlets of MSNBC and CNN. The 8 p.m. hour typically airing “All In with Chris Hayes” and “Anderson Cooper 360” on their respective networks drew audiences above average for the time slot: MSNBC’s 2.38 million total viewers including 259,000 within the key 25-54 demographic (according to Nielsen Media Research); 1.55 million viewers and 302,000 adults 25-54 on CNN.

But, a combined 3.93 million viewers for the 8-9 p.m. hour via linear platforms were all Biden’s speech had reached. Like the two primetime hearings of this past summer investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection, Fox News Channel opted to stick with their regular prime time programming on this evening. FNC remained the most-watched single cable news outlet at night. “Tucker Carlson Tonight” (2.89 million viewers; 428,000 adults 25-54) topped the 8 p.m. hour on cable.

The broadcast networks also opted for regular programming. With the exception of NBC, each single network outdrew MSNBC, the top outlet in Biden speech coverage — the 8-8:30 p.m. portion of ABC’s game show “Press Your Luck” (3.31 million), a rerun of CBS comedy “Young Sheldon” (3.21 million), and the first half-hour of Fox broadcast network’s Penn State-Purdue college football season opener (2.92 million),

From 8-8:30 p.m., a rerun of “Law & Order” on NBC drew 2.01 million viewers.

ESPN Cleveland Re-Brands For Monday As ESPN Cade York

0

Not every kicker gets the experience of making a game-winning field goal, let alone in the very first game of their NFL career. Even fewer, maybe no one, gets an entire radio station named after them. That is what the Cleveland Browns’ Cade York is experiencing today.

With just eight seconds left in the game, the rookie out of LSU hit a field goal from 58 yards out in Week 1 in Charlotte. The kick was the difference in the Browns’ 26-24 win over the Carolina Panthers.

ESPN Cleveland is celebrating by re-branding. For Monday only, the station will be known as ESPN Cade York.

Sunday wasn’t just about one big kick for the rookie. York delivered on every kick he was asked to make, going 4/4 on field goal tries and 2/2 on extra points.

A tweet from Sunday shows that originally the idea was to simply change the profile pictureon the station’s Twitter account. Obviously, it got a little bit bigger.

ESPN Cade York PD Matt Fishman says the station has already added imaging to mark the occasion. That includes the radio call of the kick, which Fishman says will be played “like crazy.”

The Really Big Show will celebrate a Victory Monday in Charlotte. The show airs from 9 am until 1 pm.

“The Browns drafted Cade York in the fourth round for a reason. This was the reason,” Fishman told BSM. “Today, we celebrate his game-winning kick that gave the Browns their first win in an opener since 2004.”

Does Cade York know about the honor?

“He does not know yet at least from us,” he added.

Vince Coglianese: Murder of Nevada Journalist Is Politicized

0

WMAL’s Vince Coglianese said Friday that the media coverage of a Nevada politician murdering a local journalist has been politicized.

According to Forbes, Clark County Administrator Robert Telles allegedly stabbed to death Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German. Authorities believe German’s reporting on several scandals in Telles’ office may have prompted the fatal stabbing.

“Most of the coverage of this does not include mention of the party affiliation of the attacker,” noted Coglianese. “The only reason why I am even harping on this is because you understand how this is framed and would be framed in the event that this could be tied to the politics of someone who may be conservative.”

Coglianese suggested that if the assailant was tied to the Republican party, the lead story would include the party affiliation.

“Instead, here what we get is censorship,” said Coglianese. “We get fewer details, opacity, and it goes further than that. Reporters this week, including in Nevada, are attempting to not connect this to politics as it relates to this guy’s political party. They are attempting to blame Donald Trump.”

Coglianese said it’s hard to believe that there’s a Trump connection given the public details that have emerged thus far.

“What in the world would Trump have to do with this?” Coglianese said. “When in the world has Trump ever advocated for violence against journalists?”

You can hear the “Vince Coglianese Show” on weekdays from 3-6 p.m. on 105.9 FM WMAL in Washington D.C.

Dan Bongino: The Word Fascist Used to Hurt One Politcal Party

0

“Unfiltered” host Dan Bongino told his audience that the word fascist is being used to hurt a political party and censor free thinkers.

Bongino explained his stance on his Fox News show Saturday

“The censorship thing is a key tenet of any true fascist,” Bongino explained. “Censoring political opponents, that’s what they do. Conservatives are constantly suppressed, shadow banned, and de-platformed for saying things like cloth masks don’t work.”

In January, Bongino’s YouTube account was demonetized after he said that masks were “useless” in stopping the spread of COVID-19.

The platform removed both of his channels and the ability to make future ones. A spokesperson confirmed that trying to create new channels “associated with his name” will also be declined.

“As it turns out, I was right,” he said. “But it was President Trump and his team that were fighting censorship after being kicked off Twitter by launching their own social media site, TRUTH Social.”

He added, “establishing your own social media site doesn’t really sound like step 6 of the 12 steps to fascism program, does it?”

Jason Whitlock: Meghan Markle Podcast Numbers Will Go Down

0

Blaze TV’s Jason Whitlock was surprised to learn that Meghan Markle briefly grabbed the top position on Spotify’s podcast charts.

Whitlock was filling in for Glenn Beck Friday when the conversation turned to the Royal Family and the Duchess of Sussex.

“I guarantee you in a week or two those ratings are going to come down to earth,” said Whitlock. “She probably gets an extra boost because she’s relatively new or brand new as opposed to Joe Rogan.”

According to The Wrap, Markle’s new podcast “Archetypes” was number one on Spotify charts in Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Whitlock said that he doesn’t get America’s appetite for content related to royalty.

“I thought that was part of the reason we got away from royalty,” he said. “I don’t get the obsession with royalty but I’m also not sitting around rooting for an excruciating death.”

Whitlock was referring to a recent tweet from a Nigerian Carnegie Mellon professor who drew widespread criticism for her tweet just hours after Queen Elizabeth II passed away.

Countdown to Coverage: Best NFL Play-By-Play Booth

0

Well folks, we survived! We made it through a long, football-less summer. College football gave us everything we wanted in week 1 and now it is time to turn our attention to the NFL.

Arky, Demetri and Garrett are back again to highlight everything and everyone that is great when it comes to the coverage of America’s national obsession. So here is the full schedule for the NFL edition of Countdown to Coverage:

TUESDAY (9/6): Best Local Radio Show

WEDNESDAY (9/7): Best National Radio Show

THURSDAY (9/8): Best Pregame Show

FRIDAY (9/9): Best Insider

MONDAY (9/12): Best TV Broadcast Team

Here we are at the end of the road. Today, we reveal the boys’ picks for the best play-by-play booth in the NFL.

All offseason, every time someone got a new eight-figure contract, we heard the same bitching and moaning from the masses. “I don’t watch a game because of who the announcers are.” Maybe that is true, but you definitely notice and talk about it when an announcer, analyst or entire broadcast team is bad. Just ask Jason Witten. You all scared him out of the booth and right back onto the field!

Who is in the booth may not be your primary concern, but clearly it does matter. So with that in mind, here are the picks for the best play-by-play booth on TV from Arky, Demetri and Garrett.

JIM NANTZ & TONY ROMO by Arky Shea

Jim Nantz is the epitome of the clean, pure, solid broadcast. The highs are not too high. The lows, however, don’t seemingly exist. It’s a professional, high-quality broadcast from his end. He takes nothing away from the game itself. He lets it speak it’s truth to all of us while he adds a little color of detail along the way. The game is the story and there is no one more refined at allowing that to happen that Nantz. He’s a smooth, well-timed engine that hums like a peak NFL broadcast play-by-play should.

What Nantz doesn’t do, he is swell at allowing his broadcast partner to fill-in: the real color of the game. Tony Romo has been my favorite partner with Nantz in any sport and it’s because Romo came in like a wrecking ball and Nantz didn’t try to take away the shiny off his bumper. We know Romo brought out the big guns by predicting plays and the most important thing: he got a high-percentage correct. Television booths don’t get a lot social attention for being good, but they can get it for being different. Nantz allowed Romo to do that early and often and the young buck delivered. Since then, he has become a lot less Nostradmaus and a lot more of a feeler of the game. You can hear Romo sometimes anguish on official replays because it’s exactly what we all are doing. He’s fun, he’s interested and he got off to a roaring start. I can’t wait to continue to see his evolution.

JOE BUCK & TROY AIKMAN by Demetri Ravanos

Guys, check your calendar. What happens today? What did we spend the entire offseason – hell, the entirety of the last four offseasons talking about? We should all be writing about ESPN FINALLY getting Monday nights right with the best booth since Madden and Summerall.

Joe Buck and Troy Aikman make every game sound more important. I mean, Jesus Christ! How many times did FOX send them to Dallas to watch a 3-10 Washington team take on the 5-8 Cowboys and say “alright fellas, polish that turd!”? Tony Romo wouldn’t even be famous enough to waltz into a top booth after retirement without Buck and Aikman selling us on his greatness.

That is the level of skill ESPN is getting. Monday Night Football quit trying to find pieces that could be good and went out and landed the best in the game period.

MIKE TIRICO & CRIS COLLINSWORTH by Garrett Searight

As I mentioned during our college portion of Countdown to Coverage, the television play-by-play announcer’s job is pretty simple: tell me the “who” of the “who, what, when, and where”, and set your analyst up to shine.

Collinsworth, when you get past the sometimes hokey delivery, is one of if not the best analysts in the game. His preparation is apparent, his knowledge is usually on full display, and he understands the game from several different perspectives. Tirico, while forced at times, delivers in big moments. There’s a reason NBC was ok with letting the contract of Al Michaels expire. Because Tirico is a more than capable replacement. I don’t expect to see a drop off of Sunday Night Football‘s excellence with Tirico at the helm.

If You Care What Greg Gumbel Thinks of Sports Radio, You Should Be Embarrassed

0

There are two old sayings that came up in politics in the last five or six years that seem very relevant in the wake of Greg Gumbel blasting sports talk radio last week.

I had never heard the term “nothingburger” before Ted Cruz used it to describe Jeff Sessions’s meeting with the Russian ambassador during Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. Apparently, the term’s use has been documented in print dating back to 1953.

I had never heard the term “a hit dog will holler” until Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum used it to describe the way now-governor Ron DeSantis reacted to accusations that he embraced racist tactics and propaganda spreaders during that state’s 2018 election. I have plenty of friends who say they heard it from their very Southern grandparents long before that.

All four of my grandparents were either dead or living in Greece when I was born. Maybe that explains my lack of familiarity.

I thought about both of those terms last week as I watched people respond both online and on air to Greg Gumbel taking a giant dump on sports radio. My initial thought when Arky Shea posted the story was “who cares?”. It seemed like the epitome of a nothingburger to me. When was the last time anyone thought about Greg Gumbel?

Then I watched a lot of people rush to social media to sound off, to be the knight in shining armor for our format.

Plenty of hit dog will holler types were in there, but so were some really talented people, people that have no business giving the comments a second thought. Maybe Gumble touched a deep-seeded insecurity. Maybe they were showing off for potential future employers. Whatever the case, Greg Gumbel hit and those dogs hollered.

Guys, Greg Gumbel is pretty close to a nobody at this point. He accomplished a lot in the world of sports television, but honestly, do you even know what he does or where he is on in 2022? I don’t and it never occurred to me that I didn’t until we posted that story.

Seriously, he could be dead for all I know and his quote about sports radio could have been obtained via seance. I wouldn’t be moved one way or the other.

The collective reaction pissed me off. It made our entire format look like a bunch of fragile babies. Sports radio could stand to be a little less defensive.

Let’s be less PR team and more punk rock. What do we think of Greg Gumbel’s comments on sports radio? Who cares? It’s Greg Gumbel.

Greg Gumbel’s reasons for hating sports radio were neither new nor particularly interesting. He doesn’t like to hear people argue? He can see for himself if a pitcher is good or bad and doesn’t need to be told what to think?

I mean, WFAN went on air July 1, 1987. I am pretty sure these arguments were formed on July 2, 1987, and people have been using them to prove how smart they are ever since.

Clap-back culture is more of a problem than anyone wants to acknowledge. We’re all alphas on social media, right? We’re not here to take shit!

In reality, you have to learn when to use your voice and when clapping back makes you look petty and small.

In this case, the guy pissing and moaning about our industry said he didn’t want to be told what to think about the California Angels. Are you waiting for him to defend the Quebec Nordiques? What more evidence do you need that he is not to be taken seriously?

His radio history, his more successful brother, the fact that he is old. Fire away with whatever ammo you want. Greg Gumbel won’t see it and he doesn’t care and that is fine. He’s 76. He isn’t exactly a thought leader. Hell, are we positive he knows how to access the internet?

We don’t need to waste time discrediting or swaying his opinion. It was infuriating watching this man get in the feelings of people that I know are smart and talented.

Let’s acknowledge that it is okay that some people don’t like what we do. Who cares? They are not our concern. Let’s acknowledge that not everyone in this format is good. That’s not ideal, but it is okay. Good is subjective and the world is filled with people that are not good at their job and find a way to remain employed.

Save the outrage for an opinion that matters. Getting angry about Greg Gumbel’s opinion on sports radio is like getting angry about a bear’s opinion of post modern architecture. You aren’t going to change the bear’s mind, and if you do, what exactly did you accomplish?

Manningcast Copycats Destined For Failure

1

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the NFL is a “copycat league”. The same is also true for broadcasting. Don’t believe me? Just look at what the Manningcast has created.

The Manningcast didn’t create the alternate broadcast. Quite the contrary. ESPN has been doing alternate broadcasts for big events for quite a long time. But one could argue the Manningcast has perfected the alternate broadcast. Not me, by the way. Not once in my life have I ever thought “You know what this broadcast needs right now? Joel McHale!”, but I digress.

But, without a doubt, the Manningcast is the most popular alternate broadcast. And rightfully so. You have a pair of excellent, well-liked personalities that also happen to be NFL quarterbacks who reached the sport’s highest heights. It’s an instant recipe destined for success.

What isn’t destined for success, however, is the bevy of copycat alternate broadcasts that have popped up, on seemingly every network for seemingly every event. It feels as if “trying to reach a younger audience” has become the new shield companies hid behind to justify their alternate broadcast, similar to the “I’m stepping down to spend more time with my family” excuse coaches give when they’re plotting on taking another job.

Young people, for the most part, are going to watch Thursday Night Football or Sunday Night Baseball or the World Pickleball Championships no matter the presentation. Sports broadcasts aren’t World News Tonight. There’s not a whole lot to digest. Contrary to what many might think, it’s quite easy for a pre-teen to figure out what’s going on between the Cardinals and 49ers.

At the risk of stepping into “old man shakes fist at cloud” territory, who is clamoring for a Dude Perfect broadcast of Thursday Night Football? When an Andrea Kremer/Hannah Storm alternate broadcast was announced a few years ago, who pounded the table and demanded that? In a similar vein to Ryan Brown’s column for BSM last week, people outside of New York hate Michael Kay and they hate Alex Rodriguez. Yet, ESPN paired them for the KayRod Cast and their biggest audience featured an interview with Derek Jeter that 300,000 people watched, or — to put it another way — about 20% of the Manningcast.

And furthermore, I don’t understand the thought process behind signing off on your own version of an alternate broadcast. If the only reason you’re putting an alternate broadcast together is because “everyone else is doing it”, there’s a high chance your alternate broadcast is going to suck. Harsh, I know, but its the truth.

This isn’t all that hard. Your viewers are going to know that you’re ripping off the Manningcast. Why you would want to associate something second-rate is beyond me. When push comes to shove, do you want your viewers to think you’re the YETI Coolers or the SHITI Coolers? Would you rather be Coke or RC Cola? If you had your pick, would you rather be Oreo or Hydrox? Those seem like easy answers. And yet, a network executive somewhere today will ask “what are we going to do for an alternate broadcast?” in a meeting, binding themselves to a second-rate product.

Don’t misconstrue what I’m saying here. There are perfectly fine alternate broadcasts. I think the Nickelodeon broadcast of the NFL is a great idea. I think Pat McAfee’s college football broadcasts will be well received, as long as they allow him to be the star and don’t rely on guests to try to drive ratings.

The reason the Manningcast works isn’t because it’s an alternative to the usual Monday Night Football broadcast. It’s because an overwhelming majority of people have a favorable opinion of Peyton and Eli Manning. Very few things in life are that simple, but in this case, it’s true. Unless you’re going to pair Ryan Reynolds with Dolly Parton, networks are starting their alternate broadcast plans off on the wrong foot.

Tom McCarthy Won’t Be Calling Phillies Games This Weekend Because of NFL Duties

1

The veteran television voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, Tom McCarthy, will not be in the NBC Sports Philadelphia booth this weekend because the NFL awaits his voice.

McCarthy will be on the CBS call of the Houston Texas vs. the Indianapolis Colts. This is the ninth year of McCarthy calling NFL games on CBS.

McCarthy will be replaced by Scott Franzke, the longtime Phillies radio announcer. He will be joined by John Kruk in the NBC Sports Philadelphia booth.

On the radio side, Franzke will be replaced by Pat McCarthy, the voice of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the triple-A affiliate of the Phillies. McCarthy is Tom’s son. Next to him will be Larry Anderson, the longtime Phillies announcer.

McCarthy will also miss two Phillies games next week against the Atlanta Braves o to call the Colts/Jacksonville Jaguars game on CBS.

Kevin Burkhardt Wants To Make the Game Sound Big

0

This weekend we finally get to hear Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen partner with FOX’s #1 NFL game. Burkhardt says nothing else matters to him when people hear the game except for one thing.

Burkhardt joined Bryan Curtis of The Press Box podcast from The Ringer. The two discussed how Burkhardt’s experiences working in sports radio and selling cars helped lead him to where he was and how he believed it all contributed to him being able to make it to this spot. Curtis then asked what Burkhardt wanted his “sound” to be.

“I want it to feel like it’s a big game,” Burkhardt said without hesitation. “I want people to turn it on, whether they see me or not, when they hear it to feel like it’s a big game.”

Burkhardt would then add that is the largest goal he has for the game and for how it sounds when he is on the call.

“That’s the ultimate goal,” Burkhardt added. “I could care less about anything else.”
