How to Sell Branded Podcasts

0

We have all tried to sell a podcast with limited downloads to an advertiser. But have you tried selling or producing a podcast for an advertiser? Recently, I interviewed Seth Resler from Jacobs Media and Community Marketing Revolution, a branded podcast production company based in Michigan. Seth recently moderated a panel at the annual convention for podcasters- the Podcast Movement. You can listen to that podcast with Seth on Monday here.

Seth works on branded podcasts for clients and discusses how iHeart and other big media companies are getting into the same. I was intrigued. Selling podcasts to advertisers seems so tethered to downloads and store traffic that it isn’t worth it for what you make on the sale. And you could sour the client relationship. So, when Seth mentioned selling a branded podcast to an advertiser and producing the pod for them, I investigated it with the appropriate markup for production and sales. Many media companies are reorganizing their podcast efforts. While Barstool Sports is cutting back, iHeart is tripling its branded podcast efforts. Here are three things to keep in mind when selling a branded podcast to clients:

1) Rules are rules. You are still looking to solve problems for advertisers. Figure out what they need and look for a business that has exciting stories to tell or people who work there. Long-established sporting goods stores, car repair shops, or restaurants can be great backdrops for stories to tell on a pod.

2) What do they want to listen to and when? We still need to know our audience. But, in this case, we are focusing on the client’s audience. If you are doing a branded pod for a sports bar, the listener may want to be entertained and listen at their leisure, not necessarily to and from work but maybe while doing yard work. If it’s a local tire shop chain, the listeners may want some entertainment but also know how to change their oil and listen on weekends while they do the work. A Dale Carnegie or Sandler Sales business would offer sales tips to salespeople and be consumed to and from work and driving around.

3) Drive the message home. A branded podcast is for the P-1 customer—their hardest core group, who probably provides 80% of the revenue. Think of a local restaurant that has the best burgers in town. When this place announces their newest burger going on sale, this audience will be ready to hear all the details and check it out! The foodies want information about ingredients, sourcing, and cooking techniques.

Considering the talent pool in sports radio, we can assume we have good podcast talent for hire. We may even get lucky and have a foodie, a DIY guy, or a business-focused sports host who can dive in with branded content about things other than sports. Other sports-focused businesses, like minor league sports teams, arenas, local shoe companies, tennis/golf stores, and private high schools, are ideal targets. Of course, they can find the intersection as well. Seth Resler told me he thinks you can make the pods evergreen and drop 8 or 12 at a time for a fall, spring, or summer season, for example. Working alongside your client on THEIR audience has many benefits, and you and your staff have the skill set to help them! You also have the station group to promote the pod-something your client desperately needs-traction.

Charissa Thompson: FOX Has Always Been Home To Me

0

Charissa Thompson has been with a multitude of networks but there is one that she considers “home”.

Thompson joined the Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz and was asked about her beginning days and her journey in sports media that featured stops with including Versus, Big Ten Network, FOX Sports Net, Yahoo! Sports, ESPN, and FS1. Le Batard wanted to know of all of those stops, which was the most fun to work at.

“That’s a hard question to answer,” Thompson bemoaned. “It’s like ‘who’s your favorite child'”.

She would then say that she has learned something everywhere she has been.

“Every job for me was an opportunity to learn and get better.”

Then she revealed that FOX always has a special place in her heart.

“FOX has always been home to me,” Thompson replied. “That was a place that, when we launched FS1 I would be doing Extra during the day. So I would work 8 to 3 in the entertainment space and then I’d work at FOX from 8-11 at night with Andy Roddick, Donovan McNabb, Gary Payton, Gabe Kapler. I was on that when we tried to recreate The Best Damn Sports Show. That was a place that they’d let me bring my dog.”

“That’s a place that has always been home for me. So to answer the question succinctly: anywhere I am. It’s sports and you guys know better than anyone, it’s our own locker room.”

Sports Injury Central is a free injury resource for the NFL, college football, NBA and MLB. The partnership will give Jim Rome’s listeners access to injury insights that will help them in their fantasy sports and daily wagering.

“I’m very impressed with Sports Injury Central,” said Rome. “Their injury reporting and assessments are second to none. But more importantly, as the sports wagering industry continues to explode, I believe their handicapping tools – especially the SIC Scores – will be an absolute necessity for serious gamblers.  If you think about it, there are so many data resources at our disposal, but where can you get reliable injury analysis from former team doctors? It’s a phenomenal advantage.”

“Jim Rome is one of the most recognized and respected names in radio history,” said Craig Dado, Sports Injury Central president and co-founder. “Having Jim on our team will provide Sports Injury Central broader exposure to bettors, fantasy players, and fans. Mike and The Mad Dog have reunited. For a podcast episode. In his latest episode The Mike Francesa Podcast, the longtime WFAN host congratulated his former partner Chris “Mad Dog” Russo for his induction into the Radio Hall of Fame to begin the episode.

“Congratulations, publicly, for your which will come in Chicago in November, right in the middle of the World Series for you,” Francesa joked. “A spot in the Radio Hall of Fame. When you heard, what was your reaction?”

“I heard Mike right after a doubles less in tennis — 50 and over — at the New Canaan Field Club so I was all upset,” Mad Dog said. “So on the way home on July 15th they called me and I said to hell with tennis. I was very excited about it. I was very happy that it happened. I know that you got in there four or five years ago but I’m gonna miss a couple of games of the World Series because you told me when we talked back in July to enjoy it.”

“Absolutely. You have to go,” Francesa replied.

“Listen, you never know. Those are quirky votes,” Russo mentioned. “You know that better than anyone. You never know what they’re thinking, the folks on the board. Very excited about it. I bought a couple of tables. I’m gonna take all my wife’s family. It meant more to me than I thought it would…I didn’t really wanna think too much of it. It kind of hit me quick. Finally. It’s meant a lot to me, I have to admit.”

“Well deserved. A long time coming,” Francesa said before revealing he and Mad Dog saw each other last week under sad circumstances, after the son of their former contributor Bob Heussler died.

Mike and the Mad Dog discussed several topics during the episode, including their predictions for the upcoming NFL season, and who would play in Super Bowl LVII.

Al Michaels ‘Really Comfortable’ With Kirk Herbstreit

0

New Amazon Thursday Night Football play-by-play announcer Al Michaels joined the SI Media Podcast with Jimmy Traina this week to discuss the upcoming NFL season, and the legendary announcer said he was slightly surprised by the chemistry he has with new analyst Kirk Herbstreit.

“By the end of the first quarter, I said, ‘This is really working extremely well,’ and then we did 3 1/2 quarters that night,” Michaels said of of the pair’s first rehearsal together. “We didn’t take the game to its conclusion because we said, ‘Hey, this is gonna work.’ We went down to Houston to do a real game—a preseason game, anyway—that went out on the air, and it felt very very comfortable.”

Michaels said he and Herbstreit didn’t have a relationship until earlier this year but things came naturally between the pair.

“With Kirk, I didn’t really know him until April,” Michaels said. “And then we had a couple of days in New York together and a couple of other meals and meetings and phone calls, and I knew his rhythm and he knew mine. I don’t want to say I was shocked by it, but I was very pleasantly surprised and walked away from the booth that night saying, ‘You know, for a preseason game where you’re not talking about any strategy and it’s the Wild West in a way, and we’re going to the sideline reporter, Kaylee Hartung, a lot, it’s not like a regular-season game. But I feel really comfortable going into that Chargers-Chiefs game next week.”

Michaels made the move to Amazon after more than a decade announcing Sunday Night Football for NBC. Michaels claims the network never offered him a contract to stay.
