Pat McAfee: ‘Kirk Herbstreit, Al Michaels Can Be Best Broadcast Team in NFL’

One game into his NFL broadcasting career and Kirk Herbstreit already has some very enthusiastic support. Pat McAfee said on his Friday radio show that he was blown away by just how good Herbstreit sounded in the Amazon broadcast booth alongside Al Michaels on Thursday night.

McAfee was most impressed by how quickly the duo found their groove together.

“Not that Al Michales has ever had a problem with anybody or Herbstreit has ever had a problem with chemistry with anybody, but you always wonder if they are going to talk over each other,” he said. “It seems like they’re right on the f***ing same page.”

Pat McAfee revealed that he has had private discussions in the past with Herbstreit about why the College GameDay star never pursued NFL analyst jobs in the past. McAfee said that Herbstreit worried about his credibility with an NFL audience since he never played in the league himself.

Herbstreit, according to McAfee, thought it would be viewed as disrespectful for him to try to land a gig on an NFL broadcast. McAfee said he has always thought that was absurd and he hoped last night proved that.

“Hey Herbie, everybody’s f***ing pumped you’re in the NFL now!”

Expectations, at least as far as Pat McAfee is concerned, are very high for Amazon’s Thursday Night Football crew.

“Why not go and be the best f***ing team out there? I’m sure that’s what you guys are thinking,” he said. “You should go get that. You CAN go get that. I’m so thankful you motherf***ers are in the NFL together.”

A day after Audacy announced the launch of the Know Mercy with Stephen A. Smith podcast, WFAN morning hosts Gregg Giannotti and Boomer Esiason joked about what Boomer’s podcast on “broad social issues” would sound like.

Esiason wondered if Stephen A. Smith — employed by ESPN — could do a podcast with Audacy, if that allowed the former NFL quarterback to do a podcast with the worldwide leader. After Giannotti asked if he would be willing to do a podcast on “broad social issues”, Esiason had a well thought out first episode.

“I was still trying to figure out where we’re burying all the batteries,” Esiason joked. “I’ll figure that out in short order. What are we doing with all these batteries and where are we getting all the materials needed to make the batteries?”

“Boomer on wind turbines,” Giannotti joked. “Boomer Esiason on broad cultural topics,” he said with a faux voiceover. “You wanna know about property taxes? He’s got you covered. What does Boomer really think about Nancy Pelosi? Boomer on Roe v. Wade. It’s an Audacy podcast. Boomer brings it on broad cultural topics and social issues,” as producers played the Audacy theme between each sentence.

“I like where I am, so we’re good,” Esiason concluded.

Ultimately, Smith’s podcast won’t have a listener in Giannotti, as he said “no thanks”.

Survey Shows Most Fans Don’t Want ESPN To Replace Lee Corso on College GameDay

Chris Vannini of The Athletic ran an exhaustive survey asking fans to share their thoughts about college football on TV. The results presented some pretty interesting information on the networks, play-by-play crews and shows we are blued to every Saturday. Perhaps the most interesting bit of information has to do with Lee Corso.

Fans do not want ESPN to try to replace the Sunshine Scooter when he finally leaves College GameDay.

Plenty of candidates had a good showing. Pat McAfee picked up 27.6 percent of the vote. Alabama coach Nick Saban had 9.4 percent and CBS’s Rick Neuheisel drew 8.8 percent. Most respondents though do not want ESPN to force someone into the spot.

Nearly 30 percent of the more than 5200 surveys indicated that they did not want to see the network try to sell anyone as the new Lee Corso.

The former head coach at Louisville, Indiana and Northern Illinois first joined ESPN in 1987. He has been a part of College GameDay ever since.

Corso turned 87 earlier this month. Discussions of what the network should do when he finally decides to end his broadcasting career have been popular, but fans seem to be sending a message: Lee Corso is one of a kind and trying to replace or replicate what he brings to College GameDay is a fool’s errand.

Tommy Castor Joins ‘Sports Daily’ on KFH

Tommy Castor has been named the new host of Sports Daily on Wichita’s Sports Talk Radio KFH.

Castor comes to KFH after working as the Vice President of Ticket Sales and Marketing for the Wichita Thunder, the ECHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks.

The lifelong Wichita native will join Jacob Albracht each day from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM.

In addition to his work with the Thunder, Castor also co-owns AMP Digital Innovations, a marketing company in Wichita.

Major League Baseball became the first professional sports league to live-stream a regular season game while broadcasting the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees game on Monday, August 26th, 2002. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of MLB.TV, Major League Baseball has made every game played today free to watch.

Major League Baseball Chief Revenue Officer Noah Garden told Sports Business Journal the service has helped the game grow, and is seeing expansive growth during the 2022 season.

“The four most-watched games ever have occurred in 2022, as have the three most-watched days. People are understanding the numbers on streaming services much more than they have in the past, and when you see that, you’re like “Oh, shit, maybe baseball wasn’t dying this whole time.”

“To see where we’re going to be in 20 years, we’re going to look back on this time and we’re going to look back on it the same way we looked back on it when we started,” Garden said. “That’s the beauty of technology. It moves forward fast with or without you.”

Chicago Blackhawks Finalize New TV Crew

The Chicago Blackhawks have finalized their new television broadcast crew, after the departure of Eddie Olcyzk and retirement of Pat Foley.

As previously announced, Chris Vosters will serve as the television play-by-play announcer for the Blackhawks on NBC Sports Chicago. Former Blackhawks Patrick Sharp and Troy Murray will split duties as game analysts. According to the Chicago Tribune, the pair will have “about a 50/50 split of home and road games”.

“We wanted to make sure for both Troy with his health and Sharpie with his family (that we) put something in place that worked well for them personally and well for the broadcast team as well as our fans,” Blackhawks President of Business Operations Jaime Faulkner said.

Sharp had previously spent three full seasons as a studio analyst for the NHL on NBC. Murray, who revealed last summer he was battling cancer, has worked as a studio and game analyst for various outlets since 1998.

Marjorie Taylor Greene: MSNBC ‘Trying to Get Me Killed’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) made an appearance on former Trump White House advisor Steve Bannon’s podcast Thursday, and claimed liberal media outlets are to blame for her home being “swatted” twice in the last two days.

“Swatting” is the practice of reporting a serious violent crime at a location no crime has occurred, hoping to send an expanded police presence, or SWAT team, to the location. It is a tactic used to increase the likelihood of an officer-involved shooting in response to the alleged violent crime.

An op-ed posted to MSNBC.com responded to Greene introducing a bill banning “gender-affirming care for transgender minors across the country”. The headline of the story reads “Marjorie Taylor Greene officially declares war on the trans community”.

“NBC News. all these articles coming up saying you ‘declared war’ on trans kids and you are a hater,” Bannon said. “Are you a hater?”

“They are trying to get me killed. Those media companies, they are responsible for trying to get me killed by those horrific headlines,” Greene said before saying she should sue MSNBC and NBC.

She later concluded “The liars in the media are the biggest enemy we have Steve, and I thank God for you as you fight them every single day. And we have to continue to do it because the liars in the media, you know, here’s one thing. You think about this. The freedom of press is not the freedom to lie. And that is the absolute truth.”

Ben Shapiro Appearance Leads to Podcast Movement Conference Apology

The Podcast Movement conference is taking place this week in Dallas, and one unexpected appearance has created additional noise.

Syndicated conservative radio and podcast host Ben Shapiro made an appearance in the conference’s expo center. Shapiro’s unscheduled visit resulted in an apology being issued by the conference.

Podcast Movement acknowledged they sold The Daily Wire — the conservative outlet Shapiro co-founded with filmmaker Jeremy Boreing — a booth in the expo area due to their presence in the podcasting space. They didn’t expect, however, for Shapiro to make an appearance at the conference.

The conference later concluded no Daily Wire hosts, producers, or representatives were scheduled to appear on any of the panels.

In response, Shapiro — who tops the news podcast charts — sarcastically said he was “literally shaking right now”.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg joined The Joe Rogan Experience for the first time this weekend, and revealed the FBI asked Facebook to restrict the story about Hunter Biden’s, the now-President’s son, laptop.

After noting Facebook “took a different path than Twitter”, Zuckerberg said “The FBI, I think basically came to us, some folks on our team, and was like, ‘Hey, um, just so you know, like, you should be on high alert. We thought that there was a lot of Russian propaganda in the 2016 election. We have it on notice that basically there’s about to be some kind of dump of — that’s similar to that. So just be vigilant.’”

Zuckerberg said Twitter’s policy is a complete inability to share the story, but Facebook uses a third party fact-checking program to decide the validity of such claims.

“I think it was five or seven days when it was basically being determined, whether it was false,” Zuckerberg said. “The distribution on Facebook was decreased, but people were still allowed to share it. So you could still share it. You could still consume it.”

Rogan then questioned the Meta CEO on the definition of “decreased distribution”, with Zuckerberg noting, essentially, it removed the story from Facebook newsfeeds for five to seven days.

NAB Show Heads to New York in October

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show returns to New York City in October with a full schedule including two days of radio-focused conferences called “Radio Reimagined” and “Charting Radio’s Future.” 

The events will welcome station-level radio managers, programmers, and operators from all market sizes.

According to NAB’s website, the conferences will cover the latest trends and strategies in radio, podcast creation, and audience engagement. Professionals in the industry will share insights on digital revenue opportunities, artificial intelligence applications, programming strategies, and more.

Barrett Media President Jason Barrett will be one of the featured speakers addressing “What’s Your Local Podcast Strategy?” and “Proven Programming Strategies Revealed.”

During his career as a radio programmer, Barrett launched two FM sports stations in St. Louis (101 ESPN) and San Francisco (95.7 The Game). He programmed a total of five stations, four in top 20 markets. 

“I’m looking forward to being in NYC in October and taking part in two sessions at the NAB Show,” Barrett said.

NAB Show New York will be held October 17-20, 2022, at the Javits Center. NAB Marconi Radio Awards will also be announced during a special dinner event on October 19.
