Joe Biden Calls Fox News a “Destructive” Force in the United States

0

A book that will be released next month will detail how President Joe Biden feels about Fox News owner Rupert Murdoch.

“This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future,” written by New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns, document the 2020 election and the first year of the Biden presidency.

According to CNN, the book shows how both political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic and the January 6 attack on the U.S.Capitol.

Biden’s feelings about Murdoch are summed up in a few words late in the book. Biden reportedly believes the head of Fox News is “one of the most destructive forces in the United States.”

The President believes Fox is a “torrent of anti-Biden programming, stoking skepticism about vaccines and disseminating wild conspiracy theories about the January 6 attack.”

In January, Biden was caught on a “hot mic” calling Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy “a stupid son of a bitch,” after Doocy pressed him for answers about inflation.

Biden has never spoken about the Murdochs in public. Last October, at a CNN town hall, Biden said, “I turn on Fox to find out how popular I am.”

Chicago’s WLS 890 AM is adding a podcast to its network called “Show and Tell with Andrea Darlas.” The weekly podcast will showcase various Windy City attractions, including cultural experiences, plays, museums, and musicals.

According to the station’s website, Emmy-nominated TV and radio reporter Andrea Darlas will bring listeners inside exclusive events with access generally reserved for entertainment insiders. The station said Darlas plans to interview actors, actresses, curators, docents, directors, producers, and more.

“I am so excited to bring my love for theatre, musicals, museums, arts and culture – and all things Chicago – to the legendary Big 89! Darlas told Radio Online. I want the WLS listeners to have their own immersive ‘backstage pass’ to the arts and entertainment community – in the greatest city in the world.”

In 2019, Darlas was inducted into the WGN Radio Walk of Fame.

“We are delighted to add Show and Tell with Andrea Darlas to our podcast network,” said WLS program director Stephanie Tichenor. “Andrea has been a mainstay in Chicago media for over 25 years, and we are eager for her to share her arts and culture prowess with our WLS listeners.”

Point-To-Point Marketing Agrees to Multi-Year Deal with USRN

0

Point-To-Point Marketing announced a multi-year agreement with United Stations Radio Networks (USRN) on Monday. The renewal, effective immediately, started in 2020 as an advertising sales agreement.

According to a news release, United Stations, America’s leading independently owned and operated radio network, will continue to represent Point-to-Point national network commercial time for the firm’s clients who utilize barter inventory to subscribe to Point-To-Point services.

“Providing barter as an option for our clients to be able to implement audience generation campaigns is crucial in today’s environment,” said Tim Bronsil, Point-To-Point CEO/Owner. “United Stations provides a comprehensive and flexible program for broadcast stations to build advertising and marketing dollars with Point-To-Point.”

Point-To-Point represents customers throughout the United States and Canada. They provide social, digital, direct mail, and at-work marketing campaigns for clients.

USRN produces and distributes dozens of format-specific programs and services, accounting for roughly 5000 affiliations with commercial radio stations.

“Partnering with an industry leader like Point-To-Point is an ideal pairing,” said Greg Janoff, Chief Revenue Officer, United Stations.

“In the current climate, radio stations truly rely on Point-To-Point and their portfolio of services to help promote themselves across all platforms, and in turn, we can offer Point-To-Point’s ratings-leading stations as part of our networks for our ad clients.”

The Secret Weapon That Took The Next Round to The Next Level

The JOX Roundtable was routinely in the top 5 of the BSM Top 20. That came to an end this year when Ryan Brown, Jim Dunaway, and Lance Taylor decided to not only leave JOX 94.5 in Birmingham, but leave radio entirely. They have re-emerged as a digital powerhouse called The Next Round.

How did the show achieve the kind of success it is enjoying now? It wasn’t as simple as bringing every single listener from terrestrial radio with them. It was about making the right hires so that they could deliver the right content over and over again.

In a guest column for BSM, host Ryan Brown explains why it is more important than ever to know all you can about your audience. The show’s three hosts and producer Sean “Rockstar” Heninger deliver the content, but they have found a secret weapon that helps them build on their success every single day.

Enjoy!

Albert Einstein famously said, “Information is not knowledge.” Anyone who has worked in big corporate media probably has a variation of that quote. When I worked in radio, mine was: “Thank God we don’t get daily ratings like TV. I can’t imagine what crazy decisions most radio managers would make with that information.” I had the required experience to make that judgment. I worked for more than 20 years in radio and was in TV for most of those years, as well. I saw hundreds of those decisions made regularly.

For those that don’t know my background, I co-host The Next Round on a multimedia platform, a project I was part of launching last June with my co-hosts, Jim Dunaway, Lance Taylor and Sean “Rockstar” Heninger. Our daily show is available on more than a dozen different platforms. Radio isn’t one of them.

Sports radio hosts move on to The Next Round - HooverSun.com

Until June 16, 2021 we were the JOX Roundtable on WJOX-FM in Birmingham. WJOX is a heritage, well-known sports radio behemoth. It was easy to know our audience on that signal. The station was time-tested and well defined.

Who is your audience? This is an extremely important question for anyone in any form of media. I have been forced to ponder the answer to that question many different times, never more than June of 2021 when we launched a venture not many have undertaken. Sure, there are the Dan Lebatards and Pat McAfees of the world, but I am not certain of any group who has completely left local radio and tried to do a show on as many limitless platforms as possible, yet still remain local. Outkick 360 initially did so, but their plan was always to build back to some terrestrial radio.

When we chose to depart WJOX, we were faced with a new version of this question: Would a show similar to what we’ve been producing for more than a decade on terrestrial radio be suited for the exact same audience if we offered it exclusively on a digital platform? The short answer we found is: not exactly.

Finding that answer was not easy but the information was invaluable. We’ve found the average consumer of our product to be much younger, less male dominant and more national than our radio audience.

Any outlet needs a way to find its audience, our solution to that is Jon Lunceford. We are show hosts, Lunceford is a number and computer whiz. In our world, you desperately need both. We went from the world of average quarter-hour shares to impressions, subscriptions, downloads and views. It was a different world, one Lunceford knew and we did not.

Jon Lunceford (@jlunce) / Twitter

As an added bonus, Lunceford has a history on the air both at 97.3 The Zone and WJOX in Birmingham. It is truly invaluable having someone who understands your audience and knows what makes a quality show, as well. It is not hyperbole to say we literally could not have made the jump we did without Jon Lunceford.

Now, back to my original fear. How scary is it knowing your audience on a daily basis?

Well, now we do and I’d have it no other way. I’ve never worked in a PPM market so my best-case scenario was knowing what my average audience was one to three months after that audience actually existed. Helpful information, information we were judged heavily on, but far from perfect information. Now, thanks to Lunceford, we can know how many people are listening to any given second of the live show. We can know how many people have downloaded an hour in any given time frame. We know how many people listen and/or subscribe to any of our various distribution platforms and an incredible amount of demographic information about those people.

So, what was I so afraid of? I was fortunate enough to never work for a manager in radio that would have made rash decisions on daily or weekly ratings but I have a ton of friends in the business that do. Knowing your audience as well as you can is incredibly important. It is the only way you can give them what they truly want, which brings me to my two pieces of advice.

First, get yourself a Jon Lunceford. Anyone can look at numbers on a screen and decipher if they are rising or dropping, but why are they doing that? I am a firm believer that you can’t answer that by just knowing your talent. You have to know your audience better. Any successful form of media will only be as successful as the person that knows the analytics. Our group had a 20-year track record of massive success in radio but we would’ve never made it in our new world without Jon Lunceford.

Second, once you know your audience, give them what they want. That really shouldn’t be revelatory but for many, it will be. I’ve seen many hosts who self indulge by talking about things they love that aren’t remotely interesting to 95% of their audience. Just because you love it and have a passion for it, doesn’t mean your audience does. That won’t change no matter how passionate a host is.

I’ve heard sports radio and TV people say some variation of this: “If our audience knows we love it, they’ll listen to us talk about it.” That may not be the pinnacle of arrogance but you can certainly see the summit from there.

What we do isn’t exactly brain surgery but there is an art to it. While I agree you can’t be a prisoner to the analytics, you have to embrace them. Before you can embrace them, you have to know them. Social media loves to tell you to “find someone that looks at you the way…” If you want a show to flourish, find someone that looks at your numbers the way Jon Lunceford looks at ours.

In the world of Hollywood, the nation was abuzz on Mar. 27 with the 94th Academy Awards. On E!, it was the debut of Laverne Cox (“Orange is the New Black”) as host of their Oscars red carpet. From 7-8 p.m. ET, coverage drew 809,000 total viewers and 366,000 adults 25-54. How large was that performance for the E! cable network? Their prime time period for the week ending Mar. 27 averaged 137,000 total viewers and 59,000 adults 25-54.

The highlight (or, more accurately, lowlight) of the Oscars was Will Smith slapping Chris Rock onstage after Smith deemed Rock’s joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith offensive. E!’s post-Oscars show, which covered some of the reactions to that incident, posted 289,000 total viewers and 103,000 adults 25-54 from 11:37 p.m. to 1:07 a.m. Eastern.

Josh & Swain Debuts On 99.1 The Sports Animal

1

Josh Ward and Jayson Swain are officially part of the mid-day lineup at 99.1 The Sports Animal in Knoxville. The duo will be on every weekday from noon until 3 pm locally.

Swain is new to The Sports Animal, but he is a staple of Tennessee sports. He played wide receiver for the Vols from 2003-2006. He then signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears. He had been hosting The Swain Event on multiple smaller stations in Knoxville. In March, it was announced that he was headed to The Sports Animal.

The new midday show is called Josh & Swain. It replaces Sports 180, which Josh Ward hosted with Heather Harrington.

Harrington is still with Cumulus in Knoxville. The former Vol volleyball standout has moved down the hall to country station WIVK. She is heard every weekday on that station from 10 am until 1 pm.

Elon Musk Becomes Twitter’s Largest Shareholder

0

Elon Musk has purchased a 9.2% stake in Twitter which amounts to 73,486,938 shares in the company. In the past, the Tesla CEO has criticized the platform for censoring people who hold certain beliefs.

“Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy,” Musk tweeted. “What should be done?”

Wedbush analyst Dan Ives appeared on Monday’s “Squawk Box” on CNBC and said Musk could try to take a more aggressive stance on Twitter which could lead to “some sort of buyout.”

“This makes sense given what Musk has at least been talking about, at least from a social media perspective,” Ives said.

According to CNBC, a regulatory filing released this morning, Musk owns nine-point-two percent of the company. The stake is worth nearly three billion dollars and he is now the company’s biggest shareholder. Recently Musk hinted that he would start his own social media company.

Musk has more than 80 million Twitter followers on the platform.

“I think this is just the starter,” Ives said, referring to the Musk purchase. “Musk is not going to do this just to take a passive stake. He’s ultimately trying to change Twitter, in terms of a more active stake or eventually this could lead to a buyout.”

Tim McCarver Retires From Broadcasting

0

It’s been nine years since Tim McCarver last called a Major League Baseball game on national television. But after a six-year stint calling St. Louis Cardinals games before taking a break because of the COVID-19 pandemic, McCarver has decided to officially retire from broadcasting.

McCarver was the color commentator alongside Joe Buck for 18 years at Fox, calling that entire stretch of World Series for the network since 1996.

“I enjoyed it very much,” McCarver told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “It was special.”

McCarver’s broadcasting career spans more than four decades. He got his start with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980 after retiring from baseball as a player.

“I think I’m happy about it,” Tim McCarver said about broadcast retirement. “I think that’s the best.”

“You are the best. I love you, I love you like a brother,” Buck said at the end of the 2013 World Series, signaling McCarver’s departure from Fox. “I love you like a best friend. Thanks for all that you’ve brought into my life both inside a booth and outside a booth.”

Mel Gibson’s Handler Abruptly Ends Interview with Jesse Watters

0

Actor Mel Gibson clearly wanted no part of the controversy involving Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at last week’s Academy Awards. Gibson appeared on “Jesse Watters Primetime” with Jesse Watters to promote his new movie “Father Stu.”

Watters was discussing the plot with Gibson. The two were having a typical dialogue about the movie’s true meaning when Watters deviated from what Gibson expected to discuss.

Watters told Gibson that he probably understands ego better than most people who aren’t dominated by it.

“And I was wondering if, you know, you had been the one that jumped up out of his seat and slapped Chris Rock, if you would have been treated the same way, Mel?”

https://twitter.com/jesseprimetime/status/1510042179162591240

As Gibson laughed, a handler for the star broke in to say the interview was over.

“Um, thank you, Jesse. That is our time,” said a female voice, prompting Watters to end the interview.

YouTube Bans NewsTalk STL’s Channel for Repeated Violations

0

YouTube has banned NewsTalk STL’s page for repeated violations of its community guidelines after an interview between host Vic Porcelli and Daily Signal contributor Douglas Blair about the 2020 election was shared on the site.

According to The Daily Signal, previous infractions involved alleged “medical disinformation” regarding alternative COVID-19 treatments.

“All we did was read things that we see in news, stories, and things,” said Porcelli in an interview with The Daily Signal. “And one of those news stories was, say, Joe Rogan, who got COVID, took ivermectin, and it made him better.”

YouTube has banned several conservative outlets and commentators for content involving both the election and COVID-19 treatments.

Porcelli told The Daily Signal that the interview consisted of reading what was going on in the news and current events. “And one of those news stories was, say, Joe Rogan, who got COVID, took ivermectin, and it made him better.”

“The debate is part of what America is,” he said. “You tell your side of the story. I’ll tell my side of the story. That’s what America is really all about. For you to say that I can’t say what I can say, but you can still say what you say, I don’t think that’s fair.”
