Jeremy Schaap: ‘It Would Have Been Strange To Host The Sports Reporters’

0

From 1988-2001, Dick Schaap hosted The Sports Reporters on ESPN and it became a weekly staple for those looking for debate on the biggest sports topics of the week. After Dick Schaap passed away in 2001, the network chose John Saunders. He held the job for 15 years until he suddenly passed away in 2016.

Some always wondered if Dick’s son, Jeremy, would become the permanent host of The Sports Reporters. Jeremy did fill in as a host occassionally and he was a panelist a good portion of the time. However, he told Ariel Helwani on the latest episode of The Ariel Helwani Show that it would have been strange for him to take the spot of his dad.

“When my father died in 2001, I had just turned 32. I had only been on-air at ESPN for 5 years and I think it would have been strange. First of all, John Saunders was a great choice. He did a tremendous job until his very unfortunate and premature death in 2016 after having done the show for 15 years. John did it and it was his job.”

Once The Sports Reporters went off-the-air, the younger Schaap did take over the time slot. A weekly edition of E:60 that Jeremy Schaap did with Bob Ley debuted in the Sunday morning slot in 2016.

Schaap has been at ESPN for almost 30 years and he has never thought about going to another network because of all the things he has been able to do at the WorldWide Leader.

“If I could have picked one place in the world with hindsight in 1993, this is where you are going to work for 30 years and hopefully beyond, knowing everything now and ESPN’s stature, I would have picked ESPN. I’m just very lucky they haven’t gotten around to figuring out that they are done with me. It’s been great.”

Mile High Sports Acquires Colorado Preps

0

Mile High Sports has acquired the Colorado Preps brand, including ColoradoPreps.com and the company’s radio and podcast networks. The deal is effective immediately.

“I am proud of what we’ve accomplished through 19 years of the Colorado Preps Network and very excited about the future with Mile High Sports,” said Kevin Shaffer, owner and founder of Colorado Preps. “The MHS crew is poised to bring additional and expanded coverage to high school sports across the state and we’re honored to stay involved with the network and help its growth.”

He will remain on the staff and continue hosting and producing radio and digital shows.

“With the elimination of the Rocky Mountain News, and shrinking budgets across most news outlets, local high school sports coverage has often and unfortunately become the casualty,” said Mile High Sports Editor-in-Chief Doug Ottewill. “But there will always be kids playing sports and parents wanting to read about those kids playing sports. I think ColoradoPreps.com fills a need and a niche that will never go away, no matter what’s happening on the bigger sports landscape in Colorado.”

Mile High Sports adds Colorado Preps to a portfolio that includes a radio brand broadcasting on 98.1 FM and 107.5 FM HD-3 in Denver, a magazine, and MileHighSports.com.

KMOX’s Charlie Brennan Bids Farewell to His Audience

KMOX legend Charlie Brennan bid an emotional farewell to his audience Thursday following a remarkable career that stretched more than three decades.

In the final hour of his program, Brennan was greeted by several guests whom he had worked with over the course of his career. One of those guests was Fox News contributor Juan Williams.

“I can’t believe you’re leaving; what a loss,” Williams said. “You have been such a presence. I am more of a national guy than a St. Louis person. I remember sitting in the studio with you and feeling so welcome. And the fact that you had read what I had written was so unusual.”

Brennan not only touched the people he worked with on the air. According to the station’s website, in 2020, Brennan spearheaded a four-day campaign to raise money for Cardinal Children’s Hospital, a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center.

Dan Farrell, Senior Vice President of Sales of Marketing for the St. Louis Cardinals, praised Brennan for his tireless work in the community.

“Thank you for all the times you got behind community efforts to make this a better place to live; you deserve all of the credit. Nobody does it like you,” Farrell said.

KMOX hired Brennan in 1988 to work evenings and weekends. Two years later, he was appointed to the midday morning shift.

CBS News will add four investigative journalists to its newly established local news innovation lab in Dallas, Texas.

According to TVNewsCheck, the new hires will be tasked with next-generation storytelling, including data journalism, and test new products, workflows, and production models for the future.

The hires include Stephen Stock, national investigative correspondent; Nicole Vap, executive producer of content development; Chris Hacker, investigative data journalist; and Aparna Zalani, who has been named an investigative producer.

“We are excited to assemble a team with such passion, experience, and dedication to solutions-oriented reporting that effects change and drives impact,” said Adrienne Roark, president of CBS Stations, and Chad Cross, vice president of content development.

Roark said the quartet would be given the tool to dig deeper to bring light stories that haven’t been told.

“We are pleased to establish the foundation of our innovation lab by bringing on board these four investigators who possess track records of exceptional reporting that enlightens and improves local communities,” said Chad Cross, CBS Stations VP, Content Development.

“We look forward to having Stephen and Nicole draw on their many years of experience, and we are excited to promote from inside our stations Chris and Aparna as team members who will help us find new ways to unearth stories,” he added.

Bill Simmons To Oversee Global Sports Strategy For Spotify

0

Bill Simmons will see his role at Spotify change a bit. He will still lead and create content for The Ringer, but he is adding more responsibilities. He will oversee the company’s global sports strategy.

The new role involves more than just content. Spotify has been very active in the sports space across the globe in recent months. In addition to acquiring brands like The Ringer and Locker Room, the company reached a deal with FC Barcelona in March. It will see the Spotify name go on the club’s jerseys and stadium.

Spotify will focus on more international sports content creation. Bill Simmons is expected to play a role in that effort.

For Spotify, the moves come at a time when the company is in need of some new leadership. The company has seen three top executives resign in the past month to pursue other opportunities.

Former Fox News Anchor Ed Henry Drops Lawsuits Against CNN, NPR

0

A former Fox News anchor who was fired for alleged sexual misconduct has dropped two lawsuits filed against media outlets in the wake of the events.

Ed Henry was fired by Fox News nearly two years ago following an outside investigation of “willful sexual misconduct in the workplace.” According to NPR, which reported on the incident at the time, Henry was suspended on June 25, 2020, and fired on July 1, 2020.

According to the Daily Beast, Henry turned around and filed a defamation lawsuit against NPR media reporter David Folkenflik, CNN chief media correspondent Brian Stelter, and anchor Alisyn Camerota, who he alleged had long-running grudges against Fox News.

NPR reported that Henry “was given more prestigious roles by the network despite a colleague’s warning to top executives that doing so could damage Fox’s efforts at reforming its workplace culture.”

In a statement to the Daily Beast, Folkenflik said lawsuits of this nature are “driven by a public relations strategy.”

“I admire NPR’s unflagging commitment to providing its audiences with such coverage – and appreciative of the hard work people do behind the scenes to protect the space to do it,” he added.

Henry still faces charges of rape and retaliation from former co-worker Jennifer Eckhart.

Alec Drake Is A Yield Management Artist

0

Knowing what to sell, how much to charge and how to package it all are common problems in selling sports radio. Packaging Play-by-play, am or pm drive, digital, promotions, video, and merchandise are part of the art of the deal. Fortunately, Alec Drake is a revenue and yield management artist.

Alec most recently served as the Director of Sales for Cumulus Dallas (including The Ticket) from 2009-to 2021. He now works as a consultant and produces content for the radio sales industry. Alec can help support any sales organization with revenue and yield management, revenue generation strategies, and improving sales performance. You can read his published articles in Radio Ink and get more details on him at www.alecdrake.com. He offers BSM some great advice below.

Jeff Caves: Help us understand revenue and yield management? What are some case examples relevant to Sports radio?

Alec Drake: Yield management focuses on getting the most revenue from your inventory, and revenue management looks at all the components in sales that generate revenue and how to maximize dollars. Let’s think about PXP, where you can have in-game inventory, shoulder programming, and merchandise elements.

Depending on your agreement with the franchise, there are usually some pre-game, in-game, and post-game slots your team can sell. While you could sell this inventory as a stand-alone opportunity, it also can be bundled into a comprehensive season-long sponsorship that includes all assets available.

Yield Management – Stand-Alone – A game day plan that provides billboards on specific game days for the client and 1 or 2 ads to run in-game. This inventory is priced higher based on the flexibility offered to the client in picking game days and the shorter-term commitment.

Revenue Management – Season Sponsorship – This six-month program would require a much more significant dollar commitment and, at the same time, offer lots of value for the client. Elements in this sponsorship can include Pre/Post and In-Game ads, sponsorship of the “Coach’s or Players Show” each week, a bank of advertisements that would run in other dayparts (such as pm drive and weekends), and merchandise in the form of game tickets for the season.

JC: What are your thoughts on giving annual discounts, raising rates, and bonus spots?

AD: Annual discounts can be productive if the terms and conditions attached to the agreement are favorable for both the client and the stations. Raising rates should always be a goal as expenses go up each year for stations, and revenues must go up too. How and where you raise rates is the key to keeping balance for market demand and what the station can deliver in results and solutions. Bonus spots are too much of a crutch in radio, and while used as goodwill during the pandemic, they must now be dramatically reduced or phased out. Strong brands and sales teams will be able to transition away from the bonus approach; weak players will find it challenging in a competitive marketplace.

JC: If you are a station consistently #2 in the format in a market, should you consider category exclusives?

AD: Giving an exclusive is a negative strategy and gives too much power to one client. They typically will not get you the value in dollars to replace what a strong sales effort could deliver for the category in the market, and it’s a sign of weakness in sales management.

JC: To get them through the summer before Football, what are a few go-to sales strategies you had for stations?

AD: The Ticket was brilliant in creating an annual promotion in June called “Summer Bash.” Broadcasting live on-site from about 12-7 pm at a venue with food, beverages, and entertainment creates an opportunity to bring in a variety of event sponsors and booth vendors and interface with listeners, a winning combination. The station would often find a location next to a lake or a multi-purpose footprint with a large swimming pool. One of the most original events for The Ticket was “Fight Night,” typically in August each year. These two events always lifted the summer billing, and combined with Football’s training camp period, they all built sales momentum into the fall.

JC: What is one piece of advice any sports seller could use to improve their sales?

AD: When you have a deep menu of choices to provide solutions for a client, you must pick carefully and not throw too much into a proposal. Understand the natural passion a client may have for one element over another and look to match that with practical advertising programs that will deliver results. Avoid selling a client something they want to buy that will not work for their business goals. Remember, you are the media consultant.

Kay Adams Confirms She Is Leaving Good Morning Football

1

There have been plenty of rumors surrounding the future of Kay Adams. One thing we can now say for certain is that she is leaving Good Morning Football on the NFL Network.

Adams said on Thursday’s show that her last episode will be Friday.

“I really want it to be a bit of a party, but tomorrow guys, is my last show,” she said.

Kay Adams did not have any news to share about where she may pop up next. She has been linked to Amazon. She remains a favorite to be a part of studio coverage of Thursday Night Football. It has also been reported that FanDuel has interest in working with her.

“It feels good,” Adams said when she was asked how she felt to share the news. “I feel proud of our show. You go back and look at those clips from 2016 and it’s this little ‘what is this?’ and it’s me and Kyle trying to get through segments of people we’ve never heard of and these awkward moments and to get to where it is now, this credible, reputable Emmy-nominated, should be Emmy-winning program is a really big accomplishment for the four of us.”

Eric Chiofalo & Zack Wolchuck Join GBag Nation

0

Jeff Cavanaugh exited 105.3 The Fan in March. It has taken a while, but on Thursday, GBag Nation introduced the men that will take his place on the station’s afternoon show.

Nighttime hosts Eric Chiofalo & Zack Wolchuck are moving from their show The Nosebleed Seats into the afternoon slot. They will join Gavin Dawson, Lucious Alexander, and Bryan Broaddus as the newest members of the GBag Nation cast.

Dawson said that the show heard from a lot of people that wanted a spot on the show. They went through months of auditions and conversations before making their decision.

“The Nosebleed Seats united inside the GBag Nation joining the three of us,” Dawson proclaimed. “We are once again five-wide, gentlemen. We couldn’t be more excited to add you. Thanks for coming aboard.”

Wolchuck began his sports radio days as an intern for the show while attending the University of North Texas.

“This is pretty big,” he said. “It really is a dream come true, growing up in the Metroplex to now be in afternoon drive with you here on the best station in the world. This is what it is all about boys.”

Eric Chiofalo joked that his mother sent out a group text to “about 100” family members and friends telling them to listen to the announcement on 105.3 The Fan. As a result, his leg was vibrating like crazy as people text in their congratulations to him.

Wolchuck and Chiofalo join the show on a permanent basis beginning on Friday.
