Elon Musk on Donald Trump’s TRUTH Social: It’s a Terrible Name

0

Newly crowned Twitter owner Elon Musk has a few thoughts about former President Donald Trump’s TRUTH Social; a new platform that Trump launched in February.

TRUTH has moved to the top of the App Store rankings. Trump started TRUTH in response to his permanent ban from Twitter following the Jan. 6 riots.

“Truth Social (terrible name) exists because Twitter censored free speech,” tweeted Musk on Wednesday. He added that Trump’s platform should be called, “Trumpet.”

Musk’s acquisition of Twitter this week for a reported $44 billion puts him in direct competition with Trump who has professed admiration for Musk in the past.

“I am not going on Twitter; I am going to stay on TRUTH,” Trump told Fox News. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it, and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH.”

Musk has asked his biggest critics to remain on Twitter even if they disagree with him. He sent a statement this week regarding Twitter’s role in society.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” said Musk in a statement from the company announcing the acquisition.

John Skipper: Gaffes Aren’t Costing Adam Schefter Financially

0

Adam Schefter has come under fire several times in the last 12 months for some of the things he tweets. Most recently, he has been criticized for mentioning Dwayne Haskins’s struggle to remain a starter in the NFL when announcing the quarterback’s death. John Skipper, speaking on the South Beach Sessions podcast, says the criticism clearly hasn’t swayed the way ESPN values its NFL Insider.

Its Twitter that has mostly landed Adam Schefter in the crosshairs. His tweet regarding a grand jury choosing not to indict DeShaun Watson said the then-Texans quarterback was innocent as opposed to simply not being charged with a crime. His report about domestic violence accusations against Vikings running back Dalvin Cook cited only Cook’s lawyer. Most prominently, a leaked email to Bruce Allen showed that Schefter let the former Washington Team President approve a story before it was published.

“I don’t think it cost him anything financially, the issues that he had,” Skipper said to host and partner at Meadowlark Media Dan Le Batard.

ESPN values an audience that values information. That is what Schefter delivers. So, when Le Batard asked if the reporter was worth the reported $7 million a year ESPN is paying him, John Skipper didn’t hesitate.

“Absolutely! Schefter has 9-10 million followers. That’s valuable. What’s valuable to ESPN? Sports rights and news. That’s their business.”

Laura Ingraham to Host Town Hall in Orlando

0

Fox News’ Laura Ingraham will travel to Orlando, Florida to host a town hall featuring Gov. Ron DeSantis. According to the news release obtained by Barrett News Media, “The Ingraham Angle Town Hall” will air Thursday with a special panel of lawmakers and experts including DeSantis.

Florida has been at the epicenter of several social controversies lately including parental rights, freedom for business owners during the pandemic, and Disney’s special tax status.

Last year, Ingraham traveled to Florida to host a town hall called “Red State Trailblazers” where she addressed the successes and challenges of governing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The sunshine state continues to dominate the national conversation,” Ingraham said recently. “For that reason, we have decided to return.” We are also going to talk about how Florida has become a different kind of sanctuary state for those who no longer wish to live under the thumb of woke major corporations.

“Florida and the American Comeback” will air on Thursday, April 28th at 10 PM/ET.

Townsquare Media announced several promotions Wednesday. According to Talkers, the company elevated JB Wilde to VP of Content & Programming from his previous role of director of content for the Rochester, Minnesota station group.

Wilde has been with the company since 2016. In his new role, he will focus on growing the company’s commitment to “live and local” while overseeing a group of regional content directors.

Additionally, Christopher “Sweet Lenny” Barber is elevated to a regional content director from the company’s Rockford, Illinois cluster.

Danielle Kootman has been added as a regional content director after spending the last six years in the company’s Cedar Rapids, Iowa cluster as a digital managing editor.

“Could not be happier to promote JB and add Danielle and Lenny to the Content and Programming team,” said SVP/content and programming Kurt Johnson.

In March, Townsquare Media reportedly agreed to purchase 35 radio stations owned by Cherry Creek Broadcasting in nine markets.

Included in the deal, at least five news/talk brands in four states. Wenatchee, WA (KPQ & KKWN); Williston, ND (KEYZ); Butte, MT (KXTL); and Tri-Cities, WA (KONA).

Mark Packer Exits SiriusXM

Mark Packer took to Twitter Wednesday to announce that he had just hosted his final show on ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM. He had been employed by the satellite radio company for more than 11 years.

He had been pulling double duty on radio. In addition to hosting Off Campus in afternoon drive on ESPNU Radio, he was also one half of Packer & Durham, which airs during the morning on the ACC Network and is simulcast on SiriusXM. He notes that he can still be heard there.

Before coming to SiriusXM, Mark Packer was a staple of sports radio in Charlotte. He was on WFNZ, hosting Primetime With the Packman until 2010.

He teased a “next venture” but did not elaborate as to what it may be.

Sage Steele Suing ESPN

1

Sage Steele is taking her employer to court. Joe Flint of The Wall Street Journal reports that Steele has filed a lawsuit against ESPN alleging that the network violated her right to free speech and breached her contract last year.

During an appearance on Jay Cutler’s podcast last year, Steele made a number of controversial comments. Among them were that she found ESPN’s vaccine mandate “sick and scary,” that former President Barack Obama classifying himself as Black on the US Census was “fascinating considering his Black dad was nowhere to be found,” and saying that women in sports media shouldn’t “play coy and put it all on the guys” when they are objectified and harrassed on social media.

Shortly after that, Sage Steele was off the network after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

The lawsuit makes a number of accusations against ESPN. They include that the network retaliated by taking away a number of prime assignments, forced her to issue an apology, and failed to stop any bullying from her colleagues.

That bullying includes NFL analyst Ryan Clark refusing to work with Steele according to Ryan Glasspiegel of The New York Post.

The suit calls Steele being pulled off the network “an example of selective enforcement of a network policy that bars news personnel from taking positions on political or social issues.”

Sage Steele and her attorney, Bryan Freedman are seeking unspecified damages. They claim they informed ESPN HR of their allegations in February and followed up with a legal letter before filing suit.

“Sage is standing up to corporate America to ensure employees don’t get their rights trampled on or their opinions silenced,” Freedman said in a statement.

ESPN has responded to the suit with a statement if its own that reads “Sage remains a valued contributor on some of ESPN’s highest profile content, including the recent Masters telecasts and anchoring our noon SportsCenter. As a point of fact, she was never suspended.”

Glasspiegel cites a source that says Steele “will remain on air” as the lawsuit plays out. A second source told him that her contract is not up for “a while.”

FOX Closing In On Deal With Sean Payton

0

It appears Sean Payton is headed to FOX. Many had speculated that he was a leading candidate to join Kevin Burkhardt in the booth as part of the new broadcast team for America’s Game of the Week, but Andrew Marchand reports that the former Saints coach will have a studio role.

Payton will join FOX NFL Kickoff and also contribute to FOX NFL Sunday. Despite the rumors, the New York Post report notes that the network never discussed a game role with Payton.

FOX NFL Kickoff is the early pregame show on the network hosted by Charissa Thompson. For FOX NFL Sunday, Payton will likely be on fill-in duty as Jimmy Johnson continues to cut back his season schedule.

Marchand notes that there is a strong belief that Sean Payton will return to coaching sooner rather than later. It has been widely reported that he was the object of the Miami Dolphins’ affections before Brian Flores filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the team. The reporter does not mention if that fact played into what FOX was willing to offer Payton.

ESPN Houston Expands WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T To Four Nights Per Week

0

The Hall of Fame with Booker T and Brad Gilmore is getting bigger at ESPN 97.5 and 92.5 in Houston. The show will air Tuesday through Thursday nights from 9 to 10 pm with the Friday edition starting at 10 pm.

“We’ve loved our time at Gow Media, and we are excited that they have allowed us to be on four nights a week,” Booker T said in a press release. “People who live in the Houston and surrounding areas are in for something GOODT!”

In addition to the success on air, The Hall of Fame with Booker T and Brad Gilmore has been a winner on digital platforms as well. The show regularly garners over 2 million combined viewers and listeners across Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Reality of Wrestling’s YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and ESPN 97.5 & 92.5 each month.

“We’re excited to expand the footprint of The Hall of Fame on ESPN 97.5 & 92.5”, ESPN Houston GM Todd Farquharson said.  “Booker and Brad have been terrific partners.”

HBO Fires Back At Jerry West Over Winning Time Lawsuit

0

Jerry West says he is willing to take his lawsuit against HBO all the way to the United States Supreme Court if he has to. The network had not responded to West’s legal letter demanding a retraction until Wednesday when it issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“HBO has a long history of producing compelling content drawn from actual facts and events that are fictionalized in part for dramatic purposes,” it reads. “Winning Time is not a documentary and has not been presented as such. However, the series and its depictions are based on extensive factual research and reliable sourcing, and HBO stands resolutely behind our talented creators and cast who have brought a dramatization of this epic chapter in basketball history to the screen.”

Plenty of former Lakers and others associated with the NBA have been critical of the series. Kareem Abdul-Jabar recently wrote that the show was boring and his concern was not so much about what Solomon Hughes’s portrayal of him would do to his reputation. He was worried about what it may mean for his charity.

Oscar-nominated actor Jason Clarke’s portrayal of West in Winning Time seems to have struck a particular nerve. In the letter to HBO and producer Adam McKay, West’s attorney says the show is making people think The Logo was an “out-of-control, intoxicated rage-aholic.” Plenty in the media have echoed that sentiment.

Damon Bruce, A’s Team President Agree To Live Streamed Debate

0

Oakland was once a three-sport city. Throughout each year, Oakland-based fans could catch Athletics baseball, Raiders football and Warriors basketball without having to drive across a bridge to San Francisco. That all changed in 2019 when the Warriors left Oracle Arena in Oakland and relocated to the glamorous new Chase Center in San Francisco. After the first metaphorical domino fell, the Raiders officially relocated to Las Vegas, Nev., and now play home games in the new $1.9 billion Allegiant Stadium.

The Athletics are the lone professional team remaining in Oakland and play their home games at RingCentral Coliseum. Yet proposals within different cities, including Las Vegas and Portland have made it entirely plausible that the A’s may follow the Warriors and Raiders out of town.

—

The Athletics are in the midst of a two-game series against the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park, a stadium that was entirely privately-funded and has consistently attracted many fans. After a photo of empty seats at the ballpark last night was shared online, Oakland Athletics Team President Dave Kaval tweeted an emoji and tagged a Twitter account that posts pictures of empty stadium seats – despite the total attendance figure of 32,000. The Athletics, through their first seven home games of the season, are averaging a crowd of just under 8,000 fans per matchup. Kaval questioned whether San Francisco-based media would comment on the lack of attendance after he had opined earlier in the day that Oakland does not receive “fair and balanced” media coverage.

Damon Bruce, the co-host of Damon & Ratto on 95.7 The Game in San Francisco, replied to Kaval saying that the station’s parent company Audacy has not directed him to discuss a single subject, including fan attendance. Additionally, he claimed that Kaval and his team are tacitly engaging in “intentional fan suppression” because of the owner’s direction of the team.

This began a Twitter exchange between the two, which ended in an agreement to hold a live-streamed Twitter debate about the Athletics organization’s treatment of their fans.

Bruce has a $5,000 appearance fee which he will donate to the Alameda Food Bank, and Kaval said that he will match it by contributing another $5,000 of his own.

While Kaval originally thought the debate would be this Friday, Bruce has yet to agree to a date and has refused to partake in it live on his show.

“Because we’re not giving three hours to any single subject in the middle of the NBA playoff[s] and the day after the NFL draft,” said Bruce in a tweet as to why he prefers to have the debate off the air. “There are levels to this.”

On Wednesday, The Morning Roast on 95.7 The Game reacted to the Twitter exchange between Kaval and Bruce.

“When you’re led by a guy like that, it’s no wonder that your fanbase has dwindled,” co-host Joe Shasky said of Kaval, “and I don’t blame the fans at all. You’re being run into the ground and they’re trying to leave.”

Kaval appeared as a guest on The Morning Roast last year and, according to show co-host Bonta Hill, did not directly answer any of the questions they posed to him. While he is not an Oakland Athletics fan himself, Hill said he feels bad for those who root for an organization Kaval runs.

“You’re a team president,” stated Hill. “You shouldn’t be commenting on whether or not a stadium’s empty…. Everything about it was minor league…. He’s a carnival; He’s a circus act.”

Hill believes that Kaval’s Twitter exchange and forthcoming Twitter debate with Bruce is a plea for attention amid an inauspicious start to the 2022 regular season both on and off the field.

The sentiment around the Bay Area seems to be that the team will soon be headed elsewhere, leaving the city of Oakland with no professional sports teams of its own. He does not blame Athletics fans for being dismayed with the current state of the team and for neglecting to show up to games this year.

“It’s just tone deaf,” asserted Hill. “You can’t draw 5,000 people right now because you’ve lost all the faith in your fanbase.”
