A.Q. Shipley Named New Arizona Cardinals Radio Analyst

0

After a 12-year NFL career that included a memorable run with the Arizona Cardinals, A.Q. Shipley is heading back to the franchise in a new capacity—this time behind the microphone. Shipley has been named the new color analyst for the Cardinals radio broadcast, stepping into the role previously held by longtime voice Ron Wolfley, who retired in February after two decades in the booth.

“I loved every aspect of my time in Arizona,” Shipley said. “To come back and be part of the organization again, in this way, it means a lot.”

Shipley will join veteran play-by-play voice Dave Pasch and sideline reporter Paul Calvisi on the team’s game-day radio coverage. He will also contribute to team content across various platforms, including television and podcasts, while also serving as a brand ambassador for the organization.

The former center spent five seasons with the Cardinals, starting 51 games between 2015 and 2019. His deep ties to Arizona include close friendships with former teammates like Justin Pugh, Carson Palmer, and Drew Stanton, and his family still lives in the Valley.

Pasch, who has called Cardinals games since 2002, said Shipley impressed during a mock broadcast session as part of the interview process.

“He’s a natural,” Pasch said. “The biggest common denominator with great analysts is passion for the game. A.Q. has that in spades.”

While Shipley is no stranger to the media—making regular appearances on The Pat McAfee Show and co-hosting podcasts with Pugh—radio presents a different challenge. Still, the former offensive lineman is confident he can break down the game in a way that both diehards and casual fans can appreciate.

“There’s a whole different level of expertise to explaining the game, and that starts and ends with the offensive line,” Shipley said. “I want to talk about the inside zone or why a defensive stunt worked—but in a way my mom can understand it.”

After a neck injury ended his playing career with the Buccaneers in 2020, Shipley joined Bruce Arians’ staff in Tampa Bay in 2021, but stepped away from coaching to focus on family life. Now, he sees the radio booth as a perfect fit.

“This is basically everything I love about coaching, but from the media angle,” he said.

Shipley’s debut alongside Pasch and Calvisi will come when the Cardinals kick off the 2025 regular season. For the franchise and its fans, it’s the beginning of a new era in the booth—and a familiar face helping tell the story.

Veteran radio personality Todd Pettengill will host the Broadcasters Foundation of America (BFOA) Media Mixer during this year’s Morning Show Boot Camp (MSBC) in Austin. The event is set for Thursday, August 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. CT at the Austin Marriott Downtown.

“Giving back to the industry that I love is an honor,” Pettengill said. “I’m looking forward to having fun with a room full of colleagues who love broadcasting as much as I do.”

Pettengill, best known for his long-running partnership with Scott Shannon on “Scott & Todd in the Morning” on 95.5 WPLJ in New York, will help kick off MSBC 2025, which runs from August 7 to 9. This will mark the first time the BFOA Media Mixer is held in conjunction with the annual talent-focused conference.

“We are in the business of entertainment, and having a morning show celebrity like Todd host our Media Mixer brings star power to the event,” said BFOA President Tim McCarthy. “I want to thank Todd for giving his time to helping us create more awareness about the BFOA’s charitable purpose.”

The Broadcasters Foundation of America is the only national charity dedicated exclusively to helping broadcasters in acute need due to illness, accident, or tragedy.

Since launching the Media Mixer series in 2023, the Foundation has hosted events in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago to build awareness and connect professionals across radio and television.

“For most of us, broadcasting is more than a way to earn a living — it’s part of our DNA,” said MSBC Founder Don Anthony. “The BFOA Media Mixer is an opportunity for Boot Camp attendees, as well as broadcasters in the Austin area, to join us.”

The event is open to all members of the broadcast industry and is free to attend, though pre-registration is required. McCarthy also thanked Anthony for partnering on the initiative and acknowledged Benztown as the event’s official sponsor.

Warner Bros. Discovery Unveil Post-Split Branding And Leadership

1

In a significant move, Warner Bros. Discovery announced Monday the corporate structure and executive teams that will lead its two successor companies following a planned separation set for mid-2026.

The split will create two distinct entities: Warner Bros. and Discovery Global. Each will inherit a collection of high-profile brands and global media properties aimed at better aligning content creation and distribution with rapidly evolving consumer habits.

The new Warner Bros. company will serve as the home for streaming and studios. It will encompass Warner Bros. Television, Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, DC Studios, HBO, HBO Max, and Warner Bros. Gaming Studios, along with the iconic film and television libraries associated with those brands. The name honors the company’s century-long history of storytelling across multiple platforms.

Meanwhile, Discovery Global will focus on linear and digital networks around the world, including CNN, TNT Sports in the U.S., Discovery Channel, and leading free-to-air channels across Europe. The portfolio also includes digital products like Discovery+ and Bleacher Report. According to the company, Discovery Global currently reaches more than 1.1 billion unique viewers in 68 languages across 200 countries and territories.

David Zaslav, currently President and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, will remain in that role for Warner Bros. after the split. His leadership team includes key creative and corporate executives such as Casey Bloys (Chairman & CEO of HBO and HBO Max), James Gunn and Peter Safran (Co-Chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios), and Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca (Co-Chairs and CEOs of the Motion Picture Group) among others.

“We will proudly continue the more than century-long legacy of Warner Bros. through our commitment to bringing culture-defining stories, characters and entertainment to audiences around the world,” Zaslav said in the announcement. “We are in a strong position to launch and continue to meaningfully grow a company worthy of our storied past.”

On the Discovery Global side, Warner Bros. Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels will transition into the role of President and CEO. He’ll be joined by a leadership team that includes CNN Worldwide Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson, TNT Sports chief Luis Silberwasser, and Gerhard Zeiler, who will serve as President of the U.S., UK, and Germany and oversee Discovery+ and content strategy among others.

“As we prepare for the launch of Discovery Global, our enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead only grows,” Wiedenfels said. “We now have the experienced and talented leadership team who will ensure strong operational execution to drive strategic investments and deliver compelling content to global audiences.”

Searches are ongoing for several key executive roles across both companies, including Chief Financial Officer and Chief People & Culture Officer at Warner Bros., and Chief Communications & Public Affairs Officer at Discovery Global.

Patrick Thomas Sues PickleJar Over Unpaid Salary, Bonuses

0

According to reporting by Country Insider, former “PickleJar Up All Night” host Patrick Thomas is suing his former employer. Thomas claims the company behind the syndicated country radio show failed to pay him thousands in promised salary and bonuses.

According to court filings, Thomas was hired with a base salary of $150,000 per year and quarterly bonuses amounting to roughly 20% of that figure. However, after the show abruptly ended in December 2024, Thomas claims that PickleJar stopped paying what he was owed, including his final paycheck and performance bonuses.

The suit, filed in federal court, alleges that Thomas repeatedly reached out to PickleJar CEO Jeffrey James regarding the unpaid wages but received no meaningful response. It also claims the company never issued any of the contractual bonuses owed to Thomas during his run as host.

While the lawsuit doesn’t specify a dollar figure in damages, it estimates that the total owed exceeds $75,000, not including interest and attorney’s fees, which Thomas is also seeking.

Though “Up All Night” was broadcast from the studios of Cumulus Media’s 103.3 Country WKDF in Nashville and distributed across Cumulus-owned affiliates, the broadcaster is not named in the lawsuit.

PickleJar has yet to file a formal response. District Court Judge Eli Richardson has referred the case to a magistrate judge in hopes of reaching a settlement before trial proceedings begin.

Since the show’s cancellation, Thomas has not returned to radio. He currently co-hosts a monthly live comedy event, One Time in Nashville, at Zanie’s Nashville comedy club.

Charles Barkley: TNT Sports Did a “S***y” Job Keeping ‘Inside the NBA’ Crew Updated on Future

0

Charles Barkley isn’t holding back when it comes to his frustration with TNT Sports and how the network has handled the looming end of Inside the NBA. During an appearance on Pardon My Take, the Hall of Famer turned Emmy-winning analyst expressed deep disappointment in how TNT’s executives communicated — or failed to — during the uncertainty surrounding the NBA’s new media rights deal and the future of their program on TNT.

“TNT, our bosses, they sucked. Plain and simple,” Barkley said bluntly. “We literally were playing golf during the playoffs, looking at the internet. On story said we lost it, the next story said we still were in negotiations. TNT never came to us like grown folks.”

As reports swirled about Warner Bros. Discovery potentially losing NBA rights to NBC and Amazon, Barkley said those working on Inside the NBA were left in the dark. Even more troubling to him was the emotional toll it took on longtime colleagues who were concerned about their financial stability in the near future.

“These people I genuinely like and love. I’ve been with them for 25 years,” Barkley said. “To hear them talk about losing their jobs in six month. As it got closer, you can see the concern. I thought TNT, our bosses did a s***y job. They did an awful job of keeping us abreast.”

Rather than hear the news internally, Barkley revealed that he found out about the rumored “trade” of Inside the NBA talent to ESPN from the very people at the new network.

“I get a text from Scott Van Pelt, Brian Windhorst, Elle Duncan and Bob Myers saying, ‘Welcome to the family. I’m sitting there like, ‘What family,’ said Barkley. “An hour and a half later, I get a call from TNT when the story broke. I told them you probably could have given us a heads up. You traded us to ESPN, and we had to hear about it on the internet. That’s just not the way you do business.”

Although Barkley did credit TNT for acknowledging a recent pilot episode taped with the Inside the NBA crew as “awful” and getting rid of it, he made it clear he doesn’t want the show’s legacy tarnished by misguided creative decisions.

“They’re trying to do something. We don’t know what it is yet. We taped a pilot, and it was a s*** pilot,” Barkley admitted. “We did axe throwing, and then finger painting. We did four-fifteen minute sections. I was sitting there saying I think this is stupid. I don’t know how stupid it’s going to be till I see it. When we walked outside the studio that night, we’re like that’s the stupidest s*** we’ve ever done.”

Despite his candor, Barkley still expressed love for his coworkers and appreciation for what Inside the NBA has meant to fans.

“People love our show. Don’t just do something stupid just to do it,” he said.

Details of Inside the NBA and how it will be included in ESPN’s coverage of the NBA next season has yet to be released.
