Radio Leaders Question Nielsen PPM Measurement Flaws in Midst of Los Angeles Wildfires

0

As wildfires raged in the Los Angeles area last week, it’s doubtful — even for radio programmers — that the Nielsen PPM measurement was at the top of their minds.

Thousands of people in the region were forced to evacuate, some with no warning, as wildfires ravaged the area. In the chaos, it seems logical and likely that listenership for stations like KNX News, KFI-AM 640, 790 KABC, and 1580 KBLA grew exponentially as citizens searched for important information about the spread of the blaze, evacuation information, and important next steps.

However, it’s unlikely that those stations will receive credit for those listening spikes due to the PPM measurement utilized by Nielsen in the market. The portable people meter worn by panelists in the market probably wasn’t high on the list of things to remember before evacuating, one leader granted anonymity remarked.

“People aren’t going to grab their meter when they rush back into their homes to get their belongings in a situation like that,” a major market program director told Barrett Media. “They just aren’t. Your meter isn’t going to be in the same category as grabbing photo albums or other keepsakes. Which is a shame, because the stations like KNX and KFI did tremendous work when I checked in on them. But they’re not going to get credit. And I think that’s wrong.”

“The system is broken,” one radio executive, granted anonymity to speak more freely, told Barrett Media. “Thousands of listeners are going to turn to those stations for information, and they won’t get credit. They’ll look at the returns and see a drop instead of a jump. Broken. It’s just broken.”

Nielsen recently changed the amount of time needed — to three minutes instead of the previous five — to earn a quarter-hour of listening. But when the meters aren’t with panelists, the length of the tune-in doesn’t matter. And in spite of the thought process being that listening went away from other stations, there’s no real discernable way to state what accurate ratings information looked like for stations covering the breaking news situation.

“What matters most is that radio was there,” another radio executive granted anonymity shared. “When people needed us, we had the information and were a reliable way to get life-saving details on what residents should do and what they needed to know.”

The radio leaders we spoke with added that this situation — a nearly unprecedented one that featured fires emboldened by Category 1 hurricane-level winds — should be the latest example of why Congress should enact the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act.

“Cell phones were largely unusable at key times,” one of the executives mentioned. “You couldn’t count on social media. You couldn’t count on your cell phone. But you could count on radio, especially AM radio. So, it’s just vitally important that AM radio remains a vessel for the public to get and share information.”

When asked if there was a better measurement possibility in mind, the leaders each admitted that there is no fool-proof, slam-dunk way to measure audiences that will showcase the most accurate results. But they all agreed that what transpired in Los Angeles — from a news/talk radio standpoint — highlighted the power of the medium and industry, and hope those who relied on the stations in life or death situations will continue to listen in the future, too.

Kevin Harlan Nearing Deal with Amazon’s Prime Video to Join NBA Coverage: Report

0

Kevin Harlan is reportedly closing in on a deal with Amazon’s Prime Video to join its rotation of play-by-play announcers when it commences coverage of the National Basketball Association later this year. Harlan, who currently works for TNT Sports as a play-by-play announcer on its NBA coverage, would serve as the No. 2 play-by-play announcer on the broadcast property.

In addition to his work with TNT Sports, Harlan also calls NFL games for CBS Sports and Westwood One. The news of closing in on a deal between Harlan and Prime Video was first reported by Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. Amazon declined comment on the matter to Barrett Media.

If a deal is completed between the two sides, Harlan would reportedly be joining a play-by-play rotation with Ian Eagle serving as the lead announcer on games. Under its forthcoming 11-year media rights deal with the NBA, Amazon will distribute 66 regular-season games and also present contests throughout the Emirates NBA Cup, including the championship game of the in-season tournament. The company will also broadcast all six SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament games and six Conference Finals over the length of the deal. Amazon is reportedly paying $1.93 billion per year for this media rights deal.

Harlan has called regular-season NBA games for TNT and TBS since the 1997-98 season, and he also served as the voice of the Minnesota Timberwolves for nine years on KFAN-AM. His first job in the sports media business was calling games for the Kansas City Kings working on radio and television at 22 years old. Outside of his basketball work, he was the former radio voice of the Kansas City Chiefs and has been broadcasting NFL games nationally with CBS Sports since 1998. Harlan had worked at FOX Sports for four years prior to that when the network landed broadcast rights to the NFC.

Amazon’s Prime Video Averages 22.07 Million Viewers for Exclusive NFL Wild Card Matchup

0

The exclusive presentation of the NFL Wild Card round matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens averaged 22.07 million viewers on Amazon’s Prime Video and local affiliates, according to data from the panel only measurement from Nielsen Media Research. The AFC North divisional matchup finished as the most-watched game of the NFL on Prime in the three years of the broadcast property. This broadcast peaked with 24.66 million viewers during the 9 to 9:15 p.m. EST quarter hour, indicative of the highest peak audience for an NFL Wild Card game airing on Saturday night since 2022.

Viewership for the game on Saturday was 67% higher than the season average for Thursday Night Football of 13.2 million viewers. Moreover, the contest was up 28% from the previous all-time record for average viewership for the NFL on Prime, which took place last month when the Green Bay Packers visited the Detroit Lions. Viewers in the Persons 18-49 demographic averaged 9.54 million, representative of an all-time high for the NFL on Prime. The company also set a new record in the Persons 18-34 demographic with an average of 3.98 million viewers. Al Michaels, Kirk Herbstreit and Kaylee Hartung were on the call for the game, finishing their third season as the broadcast team for NFL games on Prime Video.

The pregame show ahead of the Wild Card matchup averaged 2.03 million viewers, up 33% from the season average for TNF Tonight (1.53 million). Additionally, the postgame show was up 74% from the season average for TNF Nightcap (2.04 million), garnering an average of 3.54 million viewers. Charissa Thompson, Andrew Whitworth, Tony Gonzalez, Richard Sherman, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Taylor Rooks and Albert Breer took part in this programming throughout the night.

The game broadcast finished short, however, of the 22.86 million Peacock attained on its exclusive Saturday night Wild Card matchup between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs, which also aired on local affiliates in markets of the participating teams. Nonetheless, the matchup was up 7% year-over-year from the Saturday night Wild Card game in 2023 when the Los Angeles Chargers faced the Jacksonville Jaguars, a game that went down to the wire and averaged 20.61 million viewers on NBC.

Compared to all exclusive streaming games, the contest ranks fourth all time, finishing behind Dolphins-Chiefs and both NFL Christmas Day games airing on Netflix. This is the final game of the NFL season that is airing on Prime Video, officially completing the season of broadcasts under its 10-year media rights deal with the league reportedly worth $1 billion per year.

FOX Averages 35.9 Million Viewers for Packers-Eagles Wild Card Matchup

0

The Sunday afternoon NFL Wild Card round matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles averaged 35.9 million viewers on FOX, FOX Deportes and FOX Sports streaming platforms, according to data from Nielsen Media Research. The game finished as the most-watched telecast of the week on any network and was also the second-best performance for the company in the Wild Card round, which took place in 2017 when the Packers faced the New York Giants. During the 7 to 7:15 p.m. EST quarter-hour, the average audience of the game peaked with 39.5 million viewers.

This matchup accounts for the third most-watched NFL game during the 2024 season as a whole, finishing behind two afternoon games on Thanksgiving Day that aired on FOX (Giants-Cowboys, 38.8 million) and CBS (Bears-Lions, 37.4 million), respectively. Compared to the Wild Card round matchup on FOX last year though, the game is down 11% from the Packers-Cowboys matchup, which averaged 40.2 million viewers.

Nonetheless, the playoff tilt accounts for the third-largest Wild Card audience since 2019, finishing behind the aforementioned Packers-Cowboys game and a 2022 matchup between the Cowboys and 49ers on CBS and Nickelodeon that averaged 41.5 million viewers. With the victory, the Eagles will face the Los Angeles Rams with a spot in the Championship Round on the line. Philadelphia looks to win the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2017 season.

The lead NFL on FOX broadcast team of play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt, analyst Tom Brady and reporters Erin Andrews and Tom Rinaldi were on the broadcast for the NFC matchup. FOX will broadcast the NFC divisional round matchup between the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions from Ford Field on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. EST. The network will also present Super Bowl LIX from New Orleans in early February under its 10-year media rights deal with the NFL reportedly worth $2.25 billion annually.
