A surprising move in Austin, Texas. Longtime Texas play by play announcer Craig Way, who hosts afternoons for AM 1300 The Zone, is exiting the iHeartmedia operated radio station to join rival 104.9 The Horn, the flagship station for University of Texas athletics.
Austin Radio Network executives made the announced just after midnight. Way is expected to start working for The Horn on February 1st.
Way will become ARN’s sports director for all of its network stations according to a company statement. He will continue to serve as the UT play-by-play voice for football, men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball games.
One area which remains fuzzy is whether or not Way will host a daily show on 104.9 The Horn. With his departure from The Zone, it creates a potential issue for iHeartMedia not only in Austin, but in San Antonio as well. Way and his partner Rod Babers were simulcasting their show “The Sports Buffet” on the company’s San Antonio sports talker The Ticket 760.
No word yet on how iHeart plans to handle this situation in Austin and San Antonio but stay tuned.
