iHeartMedia Denver has chosen Mike Rice to become the new play-by-play voice of the Colorado Rockies on KOA 850 AM & 94.1 FM, effective immediately. Rice replaces Jerry Schemmel who was let go last week during iHeartMedia’s nationwide layoffs.
Denver sports fans are already familiar with Rice. He’s covered the local sports scene since 1991, and previously called games for the University of Colorado and the University of Northern Colorado. Since 2002, Rice has worked for KOA in a variety of roles including studio host for the Denver Broncos, fill-in play-by-play announcer for the Rockies and anchoring morning sportscasts. Rice is also KOA’s Sports Director and will retain that position going forward.
“I am incredibly excited and grateful for the opportunity to join the Rockies broadcast team,” said Rice. “I have covered and followed the team since coming to KOA and to now be involved in this capacity is beyond anything I could have imagined.”
“We are thrilled to welcome Mike Rice to the Colorado Rockies broadcast booth,” said Brenda Egger, Region President for iHeartMedia Denver. “Mike’s skills, passion and knowledge of the game are sure to resonate with Rockies fans.”
Rice will work alongside Jack Corrigan, who enters his 18th season calling Rockies games. Rice will also host “Rockies All Access,” which airs every Saturday on KOA in addition to his play by play duties.
