The moderator for the final presidential debate, NBC News White House Correspondent Kristen Welker, deactivated her Twitter account ahead of the October 22 event. A search for Welker’s handle or typing in her account URL results in a blank page saying “This account doesn’t exist.”
The Commission on Presidential Debates did not order Welker to deactivate her account, so the news was met with those questioning why.
Welker’s deactivating of her account comes on the heels of C-SPAN’s Steve Scully, the moderator for the now canceled second debate originally scheduled for Thursday, tweeted he had been hacked after his account publicly mentioned former White House staffer Anthony Scaramucci, asking if he should respond to the president’s criticism of the long-time C-SPAN host.
President Trump over the last week claimed Scully, who previously interned for Democrat nominee Joe Biden, was a “Never Trumper.” Scully’s bias had come into question upon the surfacing of Scully’s ties to the former vice president. President Trump has not been shy about saying how he feels about the moderators the CPD selected for the debates.
