Seeing your son taken in the top ten of the NFL Draft should be thrill enough. Any good dad wants to see his kid get every bit of the recognition deserved though. Former Saints receiver Joe Horn is that dad.
Horn told ESPN’s David Newton that he thought the network did a disservice to his son. Jaycee Horn is a defensive back that played his college football at the University of South Carolina. He was selected by the Carolina Panthers with the 8th overall pick on Thursday night.
Joe Horn says ESPN was too focused on the drama surrounding the Green Bay Packers and their disgruntled quarterback.
“Let me say this, I’m a huge Aaron Rodgers fan,” Horn said. “But last night when I saw that he was not happy with Green Bay … when I saw nothing at all was talked about my son, it kind of upset me, and I was disappointed.
“To wake up this morning, I was expecting everybody to be saying, ‘Look, nobody thought Jaycee Horn was going to go top 10. Nobody expected he was going to be the first defensive player off the board.’ I thought it would be given a little more attention, and there was none. It was very disappointing as a father.”
BSM’s Jay Mariotti made a similar observation in his column on Friday.
While Joe Horn’s frustration is understandable and Jay Mariotti’s analysis isn’t wrong, ESPN can hardly be blamed for its coverage. It isn’t everyday that a reigning MVP demands his current team trade him.
