The city of San Francisco has Colin Cowherd to either thank or blame, depending on how Trey Lance pans out as an NFL quarterback. The FOX Sports Radio host and his PR team are being very clear. He influenced the 49ers to take the North Dakota State quarterback with the third pick in Thursday’s opening round of the NFL Draft.
Cowherd talked about the rumors on his podcast this week. He acknowledged that 49ers’ general manager John Lynch sent him a fist bump emoji after Trey Lance was announced as the pick. That might be circumstantial, but not only is Cowherd convinced it isn’t, his PR team even sent Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio an email to make sure he knew about it.
For the record, the 49ers told Florio that Lance was always going to be their pick. It certainly seems more believable that the idea that the team was the only one in the NFL that loved Alabama’s Mac Jones enough to draft him with a top 3 pick until they turned on FOX Sports Radio and heard Colin Cowherd say they should do something different.
Trey Lance has a relationship with Colin Cowherd’s daughter Olivia. The internet has speculated plenty on the nature of the relationship, but it is almost certainly how Cowherd himself got to know Lance, who Cowherd was fond of pointing out had been to his house.
