Alpha Media is giving ESPN San Antonio a total overhaul. The station, which can be heard on 1250 AM and 94.5 FM will now be called San Antonio’s Sports Star. The new name also brings along two new shows.
First, the station will launch a new morning show with PD Rob Thompson and local radio vet Rudy Jay, who has previously hosted on crosstown rival The Ticket 760 and what was then SB Nation Radio. Their new show will be called R&R in the morning and will air weekdays from 7a-10a.
There will also be a new mid day show. Halftime will feature another market veteran. Karl Schoening also comes over from The Ticket 760, where he spent four years as a multi-platform contributor. The midday show will air from noon until 2 pm. Mike Greenberg’s national show runs via tape delay between 10a-Noon.
Following Halftime, Max Kellerman’s two-hour national show will air from 2p-4p followed by ‘The Blitz with Jason Minnix’. Minnix, who has been with the station for nearly 14 years will host the program solo. He previously teamed with Thompson who’s now doing double duty earlier in the day.
ESPN Radio will still be heard on the station, but altogether there’s now five hours less of it per day. The influx of new shows certainly gives the station a more San Antonio-centric identity, and adding “star” to the name is a nice Texas touch.
