Bob Costas has had a legendary career in the sports broadcasting industry. You have heard his voice doing World Series games, the Olympics, Super Bowls, NBA Finals, and so much more. However, there is one thing that Costas might want to do in the future that reminds him of listening to baseball games as a kid.
This week, Costas was a guest on the Sports Business Radio Podcast to talk about his new show, he said the one thing that he would still like to do would be to broadcast a minor league baseball game on the radio.
“I would love to do a season or a chunk of a season of minor league baseball on the radio for nothing other than the love of the craft and to see if I could do it as well as I’d like to think I’d be able to do it. To do even for a short period of time what those voices in the night I used to listen to as a kid. If only to a small audience in some nice minor league city for a season, I would just love doing it for its own sake.”
Any minor league baseball team would have to be thrilled that Costas would want to do the play-by-play of their games because of how much he is associated with America’s pastime. Right now, the legendary broadcaster just wants to be a part of things that are close to him.
“That’s why returning to HBO on a limited basis with their dedication to quality, the longform programming, that suits me well,” he said. “My role on MLB Network: historical stuff plus occasional play-by-play of games, that’s something that I enjoy. It isn’t that I want to do something new or something I haven’t done, I just want to, on a limited basis, concentrate on the things that I most enjoy and I’m best suited to.”
Costas’s new show on HBO, Back On The Record with Bob Costas, airs Friday night on HBO at 11 PM ET. Bomani Jones is going to be a regular contributor to the program and the first guests will be NBA analyst Charles Barkley and former USA gold medal gymnast Aly Raisman. Atlanta Dream co-owner Renee Montgomery and YES Network analyst David Cone will be a part of a roundtable that will have new panelists each month.
