Spence Checketts Signs Extension At ESPN 700

Salt Lake City sports fans will hear a familiar voice in afternoon drive for the foreseeable future. BSM has learned that Broadway Media has agreed to terms on a contract extension that will keep Spence Checketts in afternoon drive on ESPN 700.

BSM reached out to Checketts to discuss the new contract. He started by thanking Steve Johnson. He said that the President of Broadway Media had been “very fair and decent throughout the process”.

“I’m proud of what we’ve done with the space so far and the prospect of continuing to build upon it is a great opportunity. The business has changed and will continue changing so having a multi year contract is a nice bit of security in an industry where security is rather scarce.”

Checketts is well established in the market. He has been on air since 2006. He started with ESPN 700 before moving to 1280/97.5 The Zone in 2012. He was off the air entirely for 18 months starting in 2018 as the result of legal troubles. He returned to ESPN 700 in August of 2019.

While he doesn’t shy away from his past, Spence Checketts is focused on the future, both for himself and for his market.

“Between the Jazz, Real Salt Lake, Utah and BYU, we have thousands and thousands of passionate sports fans who love to consume content about their teams, no matter what time of year it is. Ryan Smith has stepped in as the new Jazz owner and has already committed to spending money on a level which we have never seen before here in Salt Lake. Donovan (Mitchell) and Rudy (Gobert) are under contract for four more years, Mike Conley just signed for three years and Rudy gay has been added for some much needed time veteran wing depth. Really pumped to watch this group continue to grow. And our college football fan passion makes the fall around here really fun. It’s good living out here and really quite a good sports town.”
