The race for the National League West crown came down to the final day of the Major League Baseball season, with the San Francisco Giants punching their ticket to the first round of the postseason following their MLB-best 107th win of the season. The Los Angeles Dodgers, who finished with 106 wins, had to play the St. Louis Cardinals in a single-game elimination Wild Card round, with the winner going on to face San Francisco. Following a walk-off, two-run home run by Dodgers’ outfielder Chris Taylor in the bottom of the ninth inning, the fate was sealed: a first-round playoff matchup between baseball’s two best teams, the Dodgers and the Giants.
The Morning Roast on 95.7 The Game in San Francisco has been previewing the series since it became official late Wednesday, but on Friday morning, co-host Joe Shasky had to get out of the studios and on to the street to show his fandom for the Giants, who are set to appear in the postseason for the first time since 2017.
“Shasky just upped and left the studio with his big giant flag,” said co-host Bonta Hill. “The guy couldn’t take it for some reason. I’m saying to myself, ‘We’ve got a four-hour show to do.’ He just took his Giants flag, walked out the studio and… just left me.”
On the street, Joe Shasky was followed by cameras and broadcast on a live feed on 95.7 The Game’s Twitch channel. While walking on the streets of San Francisco, he displayed his enthusiasm for the upcoming series between two California rival baseball clubs, and former neighbors when they played in New York, to meet in the postseason.
“Let’s Go Giants! Let’s Go Giants! Hit the horn! Yeah! I’m walking on the Embarcadero right now. Beat L.A.! Beat L.A.! Honk, let’s go!”
Caller Lizette in Castro Valley, Calif., supported Shasky’s actions and voiced her excitement for the highly-anticipated matchup set to kick off tonight in the Bay Area.
“Oh my goodness — I’m loving butcher boy’s energy,” said the caller, who was viewing the show simulcast live on Twitch. He’s going up and down the Embarcadero saying ‘Beat L.A..’ That’s right — L.A. deserves half-of-a-ring for winning half-of-a-season, and they don’t deserve a parade. Let’s Go Giants, let’s bring this back to the city and show them how it’s done!”
Throughout the segment, viewers on Twitch weighed in on Shasky’s actions, commenting “I love the energy,” and “This is great content.” All and all, Joe Shasky storming out of the studio and taking to the streets to demonstrate his affinity for the National League Division Series is a positive for 95.7 The Game, and an example of how the audio-based medium of radio is spreading into different methods of dissemination, such as the live simulcasting of video outside of the studio.
The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers begin their series tonight at 9:30 p.m. EST/6:30 p.m. PST on TBS, and will be broadcast on radio by the San Francisco Giants’ flagship station KNBR, and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ flagship station AM 570 LA Sports. The Giants have home field advantage over the Dodgers, and also defeated Los Angeles in the season series 10 wins to nine.
