The ESPN family is morning the death of Jeff Dickerson. He passed away on Tuesday after a brief battle with colon cancer. He announced his diagnosis earlier this year.
Jeff Dickerson is best known for his work covering the Chicago Bears, but his influence was felt all over the Chicago media. He began writing for ESPNChicago.com in 2001. He also served as an analyst on Loyola men’s basketball broadcasts, contributed to ABC 7, and co-hosted the nationally syndicated Dickerson and Hood for ESPN Radio.
The Bears had been part of Dickerson’s life for over 20 years. It isn’t a surprise that the team would issue a statement on his death.
Plenty of colleagues took to social media to mourn his death. Tributes poured in from those that worked with him in Chicago and others that covered the NFL.
ESPN 1000 in Chicago has a special tribute planned for Wednesday. The station will feature local programming from 7 am until 8 pm Central time. The entire day will be a tribute to Dickerson.
“Those who have listened to the radio station are in shock today,” Marc Silverman, a cancer survivor himself, said in announcing the death of Jeff Dickerson Tuesday on ESPN 1000. “And the reason is Jeff Dickerson is the strongest person I know. People say that and they throw that around about people all the time. I know firsthand.”
Just three years ago Dickerson lost his wife to melanoma. She was just 36. The couple are survived by their son Parker.
