In a story at ESPN.com written by Chris McKendry, Chris Evert has revealed that she has ovarian cancer. It is in stage 1C, which is a very early diagnosis.
Chris Evert’s sister Jeanne died of ovarian cancer in 2020. Chris’s cancer was discovered after a hysterectomy intended to prevent contracting the disease herself.
“When I go into chemo, she is my inspiration,” Evert says of Jeanne. “I’ll be thinking of her. And she’ll get me through it.”
Evert told McKendry that she is nervous, but takes “comfort in knowing the chemotherapy is to ensure that cancer does not come back.”
Chris Evert will not travel to Sydney, but she will still be a part of ESPN’s coverage of the Australian Open. She revealed in a statement on Twitter that she will appear from her home in Florida.
In the ESPN story, McKendry writes that Evert is adamant that everyone find out as much as they can about their family history and visit the American Cancer Society and the Cleveland Clinic. You can also support the Jimmy V Foundation and cancer research at JimmyV.org.
