Howie Rose will call the majority of Mets games this season, but Audacy and WCBS are building in off-days for him and will use three total play-by-play men this season. The Yankees will not follow that model. WFAN is planning to have John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on the call for every game this season.
Andrew Marchand broke the news via Twitter. He noted that John Sterling is 83. Waldman is 75.
WFAN proposed Sterling work a limited schedule last season. The play-by-play man rejected that idea.
In 2019, Sterling told BSM’s Brandon Contes that he has no plans to retire on his own.
“I can’t imagine retiring, but I guess there will be a day when I just – even Vin Scully finally retired and he was 88 or 89, so I have some years left.”
The Yankees plan to honor John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman this season. On August 19, WFAN is sponsoring a giveaway at the stadium. The first 10,000 fans through the gates that day will receive a talking bobblehead featuring the radio duo.
